The Colour Of Misery - Africa Washington

    New Beginnings

Thomas, who was about to turn fifteen years old, ran down the stairs with anticipation.

Mom, mom! Have you seen my cuff links? he yelled anxiously.

Yes, honey, I placed them on your tall stand next to your baseball cards. You have to hurry, TJ. The limo will be here any minute.

Thomas was a young boy who had always dreamed of becoming an actor. He loved the big screen and the wonderful things that came along with it. For the meantime though, he was employed as one of the cast members on a successful nighttime series. Great Achievements was a drama that played once a week on cable, and it had become one of the year’s top shows. His mother Beth was his manager. She was exceptionally good but extremely strict. With her demanding schedule, Thomas was missing out on his childhood. As he grabbed his links, he ran toward the bathroom. Valerie, his sixteen-year-old sister, rushed and moved out of his way. They happened to share a bathroom that was conjoined by their bedrooms.

You’re lucky you’ve got nominated, or else you’ll be waiting for this bathroom. Her devilish smile told him she was proud of him.

    Thanks, Val.

As he ran into the bathroom and grabbed his cologne, his mother notified him that the limo had arrived.

Come on, TJ, his dad called. We’ve gotta get a move on it.

Thomas shot down the stairs in excitement, I’m ready! And they were off to the ceremony.

The audience was soundless as the host announced the winner for best supporting actor in a TV series. "And the winner is… Thomas Clauffer from Great Achievements."

The camera aimed at the young actor’s face as he surprisingly rose from his seat. He turned toward his parents and hugged them both with smiles of joy. To the stage, he strolled, shaking hands with his allies. Thomas stood in front of many great performers when he proceeded with his thank-you speech. He thanked his coworkers, directors, and writers. He gave thanks to the people behind the screen, as well as his friends. Ending his speech, he talked kindly about his parents and expressed they were an inspiration and his rock.

On the way home, Beth was already making plans for Thomas to meet with Mr. Cavilio, a very well-known director, for an upcoming movie. You see, Elizabeth, Thomas’s mom, was running the show. She also ran the household. Everything was about business to her, especially Thomas’s career as an actor. On the other hand, Dan, Thomas’s father, was his best friend. They talked about everything. His dad made him feel comfortable to come to him about anything in the world. During the car ride home, Thomas and his dad deliberated on his school grades and his social life with his friends. Dan also told Thomas about some plans he had for the family business and upcoming social events.

Elizabeth began to hush them so that she could negotiate some deals for her son. You two need to quiet down a little. Can’t you see I’m on the phone? Yes, I’ll hold, she said as she spoke into the phone. TJ, when you get home, I want you to get right to bed so that you can get an early start tomorrow on your scripts. Dan, I need you to type up a few things for me as well. We’re going to need Jack to get on that contract for TJ, she ordered. Honey, tomorrow’s Friday, and TJ’s out of school. I thought it would be nice if he could spend some time with the guys, you know, do some boys’ stuff.

Thomas looked at his mother with pleading eyes as to say he needed a break.

I’m sorry, TJ. If you want to make it in this biz, you must sacrifice some things in life, and that includes hanging out with your friends…and hello? Yes, this is Elizabeth Clauffer, Thomas Clauffer’s agent.

As Beth continued with her conversation, Dan and Thomas reminisce about the wonderful night that they just had and meeting all the celebrities.

As his mom hung up the phone, she explained the new plans. Well, you got your wish, TJ. Mr. Cavilio’s secretary is currently out of the office. She would like for me to call her back in the morning when she has access to his appointment book. However, she knows for a fact that he will be out of the office for the next week. So spend some time with your pals. She smiled to say she’s only looking out for his future.

Thomas leaped across the limo and embraced her. Thomas was ecstatic about hanging with his friends. The year was 1993. Playing in the streets, listening to Michael Jackson, Pearl Jam, and TLC, was some of the best past times. He saw them every weekend when he wasn’t working or when he attended church. He also saw them maybe once or twice a week during school days. TJ had a tutor because he was always on the set. However, when the summer arrived, they were together all the time. Chuck and John are his very best friends. They’ve known each other since the second grade, and now they all were in high school. Chuck was his slightly chubby friend who had gray eyes. His hair stayed in an army cut style. He had a wonderful sense of humor and had great common sense. John, on the other hand, was slim with short black hair on the sides and spiky hair on top with gold tips.

His eyes were dark brown, and he had the bushiest eyebrows around. Common sense wasn’t as common to John. Thomas and Chuck had to explain many things to him at times. Nevertheless, they loved their friend. It was more like they looked out for John like a younger brother. He was the youngest of the three by seven months, but he knew how to have fun. Thomas, on the other hand, was a heartbreaker. His hair was like a light wheat color and full of curls. The green in his eyes was as deep as emeralds, and his lips were full and ruby. The cut in his body clearly stated that he worked out a tad. Thomas was funny, caring, and very bright. And all the boys were sensitive and respectful to their elders and the opposite sex. They were raised with good morals. Getting together was one of the most important times for them all. They looked forward to it and seem to cherish it deeply.

Friday morning, Thomas hoped out of bed and rushed to the shower. He quickly ran downstairs and grabbed a piece of toast off the table as he dashed for the door.

Bye, Mom and Dad. I’m meeting the guys at the soda shop. I’ll be home by dinner! yelled Thomas.

It was a nice day. The sun was out, and the wind was still. The boys decided to finalize some plans for Thomas’s birthday party that was just a day away.

TJ, you really should ask your mom if you can have the party in the pool house. Having chaperones at your fifteenth birthday party is going to be so lame, especially your folks, squealed Chuck.

Everyone that knew Thomas called him by his nickname, TJ.

Yeah, dude, how are you going to impress Kathy if your parents are hanging over your shoulder? That’s gonna suck, added John.

"I know, man, but it’s hard convincing my mom. You guys know how strict she is. You see how she’s always on me. I figure I can talk my dad into it and let him convince her for me," explained Thomas.

The boys looked at each other and grinned with devilment.

That might just work, TJ. You are the man! replied John.

As they exit the soda shop, they ran into Kathy. Kathy was the typical girl next door. Dark-auburn hair flowed down her back. Her eyes were of a smoky gray, and her cheeks always seemed to be of a rosy color. Headbands and ribbons were her favorite accessories.

Hey, Kathy, what’s up? asked Chuck.

Kathy was quite surprised at seeing them. Oh wow! This is a surprise. I was on my way to your house, TJ, to talk to you, she replied.

Thomas’s face grew a moderate grin as he spoke softly with confidence.

    Oh really, what’s up?

I’m not going to make it to your party tomorrow, she reported this news sadly.

Why? You’ve gotta come. I mean it wouldn’t be a party if you didn’t show, you know? He cleaned up his expression.

That’s sweet and all, but I have a friend who’s coming to town this afternoon to stay with me for a few weeks. She’s really a good friend of mine, and I can’t let her sit up at my house with my parents while I’m out having a good time. That wouldn’t be right, so I’m going to skip your party. Besides, she’s really going through a difficult time right now, and she shouldn’t be alone. Her response was blunt but remorseful.

Thomas had to think fast. Well, bring her to the party. You said she was going through some tough times? Then bring her along. A party is what she might need right now.

TJ couldn’t miss out on the opportunity to spend some time with Kathy. He sure didn’t mind if someone else tagged alone. He thought to himself that maybe Chuck or John might find Kathy’s friend cute and keep her occupied.

Are you sure you don’t mind? Kathy had to be certain.

    Of course not, reassured Thomas.

Kathy smiled and replied, Well, I guess we’ll see you tomorrow. Later. Strolling away gently, that’s how she always leaves their presence.

That was definitely close, Thomas said softly to himself.

I hope her friend isn’t a dog, said John.

They all laughed and finished the day just being boys.

Saturday morning arrived, and it was a beautiful day. The wind was calm, and the trees were still. The sun was just rising over the horizon. Thomas and his dad were fishing at a nearby lake. There would be days that they wouldn’t do anything but talk for hours. If anyone asked him who his best friend was, he would undeniably say his father. They had this connection between them. No matter the situation in the past, good or bad, Dan was always there for him. So fishing was as customary as eating breakfast together. Thomas never felt any shame with his relationship with his father like most kids would have. Expressing that his father was his best friend was never an embarrassment.

In the midst of the silence, Thomas spoke. Dad, can I ask you something?

Yes, TJ, what is it? Thomas’s dad was very laid back.

He was tall and managed to keep in shape by working out occasionally. His hair was dark brown with strips of gray. He kept a clean shave, and his eyes were a soft brownish green.

    What’s bothering you, son?

Looking down rather shyly, he answered him, Tell me about girls. How do you know if they truly like you? Not just for what you are but for who you are.

His father gazed at him with understanding. He also realized that there are girls who will use him, and this will confuse him to the point that TJ might begin not to trust people. TJ, you are coming of age, and life is full of decisions, and there won’t be an easy answer for everything. But choosing the best path of decision is your responsibility. Girls are nice. Some will make you feel like you have butterflies flying around in your belly, and then there are some who will have butterflies over you. As long as you both feel butterflies, that’s what is important, his father explained.

Butterflies? What are butterfly feelings? questioned Thomas.

His father went on to clarify. You know how you felt when the host of the award was about to call out the winner before he said your name? Well, you kind of feel like that in the pit of your stomach. It’s that feeling you had that night at the awards. Remember how he called out your name and how you still had that funny feeling in your stomach, but it was a relief?

Thomas nodded softly and replied, Yeah, I remember. It was like riding a roller coaster, and after the dip, you feel relax that the dip is over, but the feeling is still there until the ride is over, like the ride is just a little more barring. Thomas’s face was uncertain.

Exactly! shouted his dad. That’s kind of what liking a special girl feels like. But if only one of you has that feeling and the other doesn’t, then it’s not the real thing. You’ll know when a girl’s heart skips a beat for you. If you think with your heart and your head and not your, you know what, you’ll know what’s true and not. Friends respect one another. This goes for relationships as well. His dad finished with a smile. Things had begun to clear for Thomas.

His father continued, Is there a special girl you like?

Thomas smiled. You know Kathy, right?

Dan grinned. Oh yes, she is a beauty.

Nodding his head in agreement, Thomas’s smile grew wider.

Do you think about her when you wake up in the morning, throughout the day, and before you go to sleep? Dan asked.

Thinking long and hard, he replied, Of course not, I mean, I like her, but I don’t think about her all the time. I have so much stuff going on with myself. Who would have the time to think about somebody all day?

Dan laughed. You’d be surprised. When you’re in love, in the very beginning of it, you always think about that one person. You want to know if that person is safe, what they are doing when they’re not with you, who are they with… You remember every detail of memories that you made together, whether it be something that made them laugh or cry.

Thomas put his head down. Well, I guess I’m not in love, if that’s the case.

Dan laughed once again. No, you’re not, and you probably won’t be for a while. Be patient, son. No need to rush into anything more complicated than what you’re dealing with now.

Thomas agreed. Then Thomas confessed to his dad about another issue, Dad, is it possible to know what you want to do when you grow up, but at the same time, don’t want to grow up?

He laughed out a small chuckle. Sure, it is. You see, you know you want to be an actor, but you enjoy being a kid just as much. What’s happening is that you’re growing up, and you fear that you’re going to stop having fun. You know, TJ, you don’t have to stop having fun when you’re an adult. Most adults don’t know that. Of course, you’ll have to work to support you and your family, but you also work to play. Thomas just gave him a blank stare.

Some people get so wrapped up in their jobs and making money that they forget how to live. You take vacations, long weekends, you get a hobby, and no matter what, you always keep your closes friends around to remember all the wonderful memories that you’re making now.

Adults still make mistakes, huh? I know it sounds stupid to say this, but I’m worried I’m going to be one of those people, TJ explained.

No, it’s actually a grownup thing to say. It’s true most adults don’t admit their mistakes. But if you confront them and deal with them, that’s what makes you a mature adult. You must hold yourself accountable so that you’ll learn from your mistakes and experiences. They both smiled at each other as his father rubbed his head. His father kind of glances his way with an uneasy feeling. You know, TJ, you can come to me or your mother about anything. That’s what we’re here for, to help guide you. Thomas knew this.

Softly, Thomas replied, I know I can come to you, Dad, but I can’t talk to mom. She’s too strict, and we just don’t click like that. She doesn’t listen to me.

His father placed his rod in the boat. He reached out and grabbed his son’s hands. That’s what family is all about, honesty. I will never keep anything from you that I feel you need to know. I’m a true believer in family. Honesty means a lot, and without it, you have nothing, and your mom feels the same way.

Thomas shook his head in agreement. His father’s words were like stone to him, and he was grateful for the talk. Thanks, Dad, I can always count on you.

They went back into silence once again. Neither of them spoke on the matter again. Fishing was over, and they began to pack for home. Thomas now laid down his sad song about having the party in the house with his parents and how it’s so uncool. His dad got the picture and agreed to talk to his mom about letting him have the party in the pool house. Things were pulling together for Thomas. But what he didn’t realize, that night was going to change his life.

Now talking to Beth was an entirely different story. She was very beautiful. Light-brown hair that cut right at the lower part of her neck, which was how she loved it to hang. She had soft brownish eyes and very thin lips. She was a thin woman who was of average height. She carried herself like a woman of millions, and she subjugated her family like a warden from prison. Talking to her about any subject regarding Thomas sometimes lingered on for hours. She wasn’t like this with her daughter, Valerie. Val, as they called her, was very beautiful as well. She wore her hair directly below her shoulders. She also had gray eyes and dark-brown hair. She was the oldest child of Dan and Beth. Being popular was the only thing in her mind as a junior in high school. She was on the cheerleading team and in the debate club.

This could have been the reason for all the attention she received from their mother if it wasn’t for the fact that Thomas also had a younger brother named Shelby. He was adorable as the day he was born. He maintained a short cut, and it was blond, while his eyes were a tad more brownish like his mom’s. Although he was only three at the time, Thomas couldn’t understand why his mom, Beth, always watched him with an eagle’s eye and not the others. Dan never argued with his wife about any decisions she made in the household. After all, he spent most of his time down at the warehouse he owned. It was the largest vending machine manufacturing company in the country. He just gave her full control, and she ran the house like a tight ship. Dan spoke to Beth regarding the pool house, and it took some begging, but after some time, she finally agreed on it.

The night drew quickly than the young boy expected. The sky was full of stars, and a fresh night smell filled the air. Elizabeth agreed to let Thomas use the pool house. Trying to restrain from a temper tantrum, Valerie was holding up well. She wanted to have her party in the pool house, and her mother refused endlessly. Well, she was turning seventeen, and that’s a big difference when boys were involved. At least that’s what her mother believed. Thomas was getting agitated and anxious. Guests were arriving by the carloads, and Valerie led them to the pool house. His friends were impressed, and a few of them were a little jealous with envy. Music was playing, and dancing was happening. Yeah, things were going smooth. Thomas anticipated for the moment to see Kathy. He kept looking in the mirror to make sure his appearance was moving. He put on his best jeans with a matching jean jacket.

Wearing a nice smoky-gray T-shirt with a pocket and smoky-gray Converse gym shoes, Thomas was looking rather sporty. He was styling, and he knew it. Thomas realized he was short of chairs. He ran back into the house and confronted his mother about the situation.

Well, TJ, go in the basement and grab some more chairs, his mother ordered.

An odd look came over his face. Mom, you know I hate going down there. I think somebody died down there or something. It’s just spooky to me. He began to shiver in fear.

Ha ha, you big baby. You’re fifteen, and you can’t even go in the basement alone, Val teased him often about his fear.

Shut up, pig! Thomas was getting aggravated by his big sister.

Before the argument could go any further, their mother put a stop to it immediately. Cool it you two! Thomas, go get the chairs. Val, hush up.

They both obeyed for their mother was the ruler of the home. He pouted and headed for the basement door. He pulled the door open slowly and cut on the light as he stared down the stairs. Walking at a slow pace, he made his way to the bottom. He looked around as he got a cold chilly feeling. He saw the chairs across the way and quickly ran to them. When he turned around to head back, he heard a cry. He looked around his shoulder and into a corner. The voice was of a young boy crying for help. He began to pant with fear as he froze in that spot.

Please stop. I’m sorry, was the sound that came from the corner of the basement. Although there was no one in sight, the call was clear and loud to him. Thomas felt his legs give way, and he ran up the stairs. He shut the door behind him and, with deep breaths, relaxed on the back of the door.

    Mom!

Beth ran toward Thomas in urgency. Thomas, what’s wrong?

Trying to speak through his breathing was difficult. I heard a child crying. I’m telling you, Mom, somebody died down there. I can’t understand how come no one else heard the calls before!

Beth just glanced at him in an awkward manner. Thomas, go wash your face and head back out to your company. We’ll bring the chairs out to you.

This was a relief to him. He ran and did as he was told. When he reached his bathroom, he glanced deep into the mirror. His face was flushed. He quickly took off his jacket and shirt and threw cold water on his face. As he stared into the mirror, his face grew a puzzled expression. The voices in the basement were loud and clear. How come he was the only one who’s ever heard them? It wasn’t as if they were new. He had been hearing them for the past six months. He collected himself and returned to his guests.

His mother collected the chairs and brought them upstairs to Val. Before she could grab the chairs, the doorbell rang, and it was Kathy and her friend. Thomas had already returned to the party. What he experienced with the ghost in the house, he only shared with his family. A little past four o’clock, Val walked Kathy and her friend to the pool house. All attention was on Val as she slightly jostles the door. Thomas, Chuck, and John glared at the doorway with amazement. Kathy’s friend was a young black girl from Chicago. She also was the only Black at the party. There stood his amazing creature, who had a smile as white as clouds and wonderful hazel eyes. Her hair was long and wavy with a deep-black shine throughout it.

The lips of this beauty were full and shapely. She was thick, and her body held the image of an hourglass. Although she was a child, she seemed fully developed compared to the other young girls at the party. Some of the kids smiled, and some just stared in confusion.

Thomas walked over and began to introduce himself. Hi, I’m Thomas, but everyone calls me TJ. Thomas spoke as he found himself lost in her eyes.

I’m Indie, Indie Harris, the young girl responded back.

Kathy stared at both of them in complete awe. Hi, TJ? said Kathy.

Oh yeah! I’m sorry. Hey, Kathy, please come in and have a drink or snack or whatever you want.

Thomas was stumbling over his words because this was a surprise. Thomas lived in an all-White community. The neighborhood had encounter other races but wasn’t really active with them. So it was a surprise that Kathy’s best friend happened to be Black.

Well, TJ, this is my friend that I told you about. Indie, that’s Chuck and John, TJ’s best friends. Kathy pointed toward the boys while they walked over to greet them.

Hi, thanks for letting me come to your party. I told Kathy I could have stayed at the house until she came back. The young girl felt very out of place. She was jittery and timid, but that didn’t last very long.

Thomas had already begun to make her feel at home. Would you like some punch? He merely was concerned about this mystery guest.

Chuck quickly covered TJ’s track. "Yeah, would you both care for some punch?"

The girls nodded as they strolled over to the table. TJ felt stupid but soon forgot about it.

John wasn’t very pleased with the newcomer. He hung in the crowd and kept his distance. It was obvious that TJ was very interested in Indie. From the moment she entered the room, Thomas kept this dazed look upon his face. He couldn’t keep his eyes off her soft, plump lips that she kept moist as she ran her tongue over them constantly but gently. The skin that she bared was a passionate cocoa complexion.

Indie herself could not contain her first impression of TJ. Although words were not spoken, it was written in her smile as she glanced at him. They immediately clicked.

So, Thomas, how old are you today? she asked.

I’m fifteen. How about you? he replied.

I’m fifteen. My birthday was April 23.

He looked at her with amazement. Wow! My birthday is May 23, exactly one month after yours. Cool, he explained. So, Indie, what did you do on your birthday?

My folks took me and a couple of my friends to this place called Lawry’s in downtown Chicago. It’s a real expensive restaurant. Then we went back to our house and danced and sang, you know party stuff. Now your party is cool, no chaperones. That’s straight.

Yeah, well, my parents are nice. We’re a real close family, bragged Thomas.

Indie changed the subject quickly, for she knew he would ask her about her family, and she wasn’t ready to discuss them. So what’s it like to be a star?

Thomas thought for a moment with a slight smile upon his innocent face. Hmm…what’s it like, well, TV is okay, but the big screen is where I want to be. I like it, but I like my friends and my free time. Sometimes it’s hard to go to the set when I know Chuck and John are going to a baseball game or an amusement park. Other times, I just can’t wait to get back to work. I know I want to be an actor in movies, so I just tell myself acting is for now, but friends are forever. That’s the only way I know how to deal with it. He astonished her with his reply. So you’re keeping it real, huh? He picked up on her slang quickly. After all, he too was a teenager. Yeah, well, you know. What do you want to do or be someday, Indie?

With confidence, she responded, I want to be a pilot for a large airline company.

This shocked him also. He’s never seen a female pilot and let alone one that was Black, but he kept that to himself.

Well, anything is possible, he added. How did you get the name Indie?

My parents wanted to go to India, but I came first. She laughed and continued, Why? You don’t like it?

Oh, I think your name is beautiful like you. The compliment fell from his lips before he realized what he had said. They both blushed in complete demure. So what are your hobbies, Indie?

She thought for a moment and retorted, I like swimming, walking, jogging, cookouts, long talks, kicking back with my friends, of course, and most of all, poetry. I love some of William Blake’s poems, but I’m also into African American poets like Emu and Zulu. I think I’m also obsessed with stories on Cleopatra. Now she didn’t take mess from anyone, and there was nothing she couldn’t do. She lived when she wanted to live, and she died when she wanted to die.

Thomas’s expression was a bit confused, but she knew he was unaware of her culture. I’ve heard of William Blake. My dad has some of his books in our library. Maybe sometimes you can stop by and check some of them out?

I’d like that, she assured him. So what’s your story, Thomas?

Thomas felt a little nervous because he didn’t want her to think he was weird, but he had a feeling that she might understand him, so he was honest. Well, I love hanging out with my dad.

She smiled an innocent grin as she gave out a small coo.

Yeah, yeah, I know what you’re thinking. What a lame. He likes hanging out with his old man. He laughed while her brow frowned in a disagreeable manner.

I’m not thinking that at all. I think it’s great that you like hanging out with your dad. He must be a pretty cool person.

This was too unbelievable for him. Beauty and understanding from this young girl, this was too strange to him. "Yeah, he is cool. He’s my best friend. But besides that, I have other past-time things too."

Like what? Indie was very interested in him from the start.

All day long, I’m surrounded by people. My favorite past-time thing to do is to go to a quiet place and see what it’s like to be alone. No orders from my mom or my job to consume my day. Just me in the sun, under a tree, finding peace. He watched for acceptance from her expression.

There was comfort in her voice and a grin within her lips. She knew how he felt, and she could relate. That’s cool.

He dropped his head before speaking. Maybe you’d like to join me one day.

Confused, she responded, I thought you go there to be alone. Wouldn’t my being there just defeat the purpose?

Slowly he glanced up at her. "I think I’d enjoy your company."

Their hearts began to beat rapidly. It was as if they didn’t notice anyone else at the party. Their eyes gazed at one another.

The party was going on without the two of them. There was dancing, singing, and laughter. Then the slow jams played, and couples began to draw close to one another.

You want to dance? he asked.

I’d like that, she responded as they walked to the dance area.

When Chuck saw this, he immediately asked Kathy to dance. She accepted with joy. Kathy wasn’t hurt about what was going on between Thomas and Indie. She was more embarrassed at the way everyone else was staring at them as if they had the plague. Nevertheless, she was glad that Thomas was treating her friend nicely and respectfully. She knew that Indie was going through some heartache over a recent loss, and hopefully Thomas would be the perfect thing to get her back into the mix.

As the couples danced, Thomas happened to glance over and noticed Kathy with Chuck. He realized that he had ignored her the entire time. Quickly, Kathy gave a smile of permission to let him know she was fine and wasn’t upset at all. This was a special moment for Thomas. Here he was at fifteen, dancing to Cindy Lauper, Time After Time, with a very beautiful girl. Holding her tightly to him as close as two can get, his face was pressed up against her cheeks that felt as soft as a satin pillowcase. Then it happened. Butterflies. A strange feeling had hit him in the pit of his stomach, and it made him nervous more than ever.

He couldn’t bear the coming to the end of this night. He spoke in her ear ever so gently, Come with me.

She had followed without a thought, for she felt comfort in his presence.

Thomas led her behind the guesthouse. There, he tilted his head and gazed into the sky. It was filled with many stars that glistened and shimmered. The air was fresh, and a light breeze blew mildly through their hair.

He then turned to Indie and focused on her eyes. You know, you’re the only one that calls me Thomas. Everyone else calls me TJ, but I like it when you call me by my real name. It sounds nice coming from you.

Indie concentrated on the moment but couldn’t help to feel uneasy. I feel really strange in the pit of my stomach. That’s all she could come up with. His jaw slightly fell ajar. The curve of his eyebrows made knowledge that he was truly in deep thought.

You too? he asked with anticipation.

As she nodded, her bottom lip began to shiver. He leaned in to kiss her as he focused on her lips. His eyes drifted toward her eyes for permission to continue. Then without dithering, her eyes flutter. They softly closed together while she held her breath with eagerness. Leaning in slowly, their lips touched. A warm hand reached up and massaged her upper arms. She reached for him and took hold of his elbows. They weren’t sure what to do next, but slowly, her tongue passionately licked across his as he returned the warm gesture.

Although it seemed like an eternity, the kiss only lasted a few seconds. They couldn’t draw back sooner because they were filled with heat. Some sort of romance gets the best of us. How could they fight this, and why should they? He didn’t feel butterflies with Kathy. He didn’t feel what he had felt at that moment ever. With Indie, he had just dropped from the dip of a roller coaster. Clouds gathered in the sky, and rain fell lightly. They looked at each other in silence. What could they say? They truly felt something, a connection of some sort. Neither of them was certain but was willing to find out. This evening was coming to an end and a new beginning. Thomas stood peacefully staring into the deepest part of her eyes. His mind wondered about what he was feeling. Shockingly, no words were spoken, only gazes at one another. Her hands felt like satin in his. They had forgotten where they were and found themselves alone in the world.

The party ended, and all the guests left. The five young kids were the last to linger around. After some laughs and good stories told, they decided to say their goodbyes with the agreement of meeting at church the next day. Kathy gave Chuck the okay to call on her in the near future. They found out that they had a lot in common.

Right before the girls took off, Thomas pulled Indie to the side for one last moment. I just want you to know that I don’t just go around kissing girls the first time I meet them. I don’t do that. You could tell the sincerity in his voice and the eye contact he depended on to convince her that his words were solid. Actually, that was my first kiss. Embarrassed, he waited for her response.

She smiled and began to walk off. In her tracks, she came to a halt and took one last look back at him. Mine too. Then off the two girls went.

Thomas gazed at the car until it was out of sight. The boys began to clean up the pool house while they discuss the party.

Chuckster, looks like you were trying to move in on Kathy, teased John.

Chuck looked very ashamed and reacted defensively. Well, it’s not my fault that TJ ignored Kathy all night. I was trying to keep her entertained.

That’s cool, Chuck. Kathy’s not too good for you. You know, if she thinks you’re hot, then go for it. I’m not mad or anything. Besides, our friendship goes way deeper than that, explained TJ.

John began to pry again. Well, what’s up with you and that chick? I know you don’t like her, do you?

TJ smiled as he picked up empty pop cans. I don’t know. I think she’s cute and cool. She’s a good dancer, and we had a lot to talk about. Who knows? This might lead to something, he responded.

John had this disgusted look on his face. You do realize she’s Black, right? he questioned.

You know, John, I didn’t think you were so primitive. I mean I knew you were a little stupid, but you seem to surprise me every waking moment, Thomas replied with a little attitude.

First of all, don’t call me stupid. John was getting hot under the collar. Second, you know that your parents would freak out if you dated a Black girl. Dude, as strict as your mom is, I wouldn’t even chance it if I were you! Sure your family has Black friends, so does mine, and not once have my parents invited one of them over to dinner, John spoke with such confidence that it was almost sad.

Chuck was a little surprised that John felt this way, but he kind of knew where he was coming from. He didn’t have the same feelings; he just knew that John might be right about their parents.

TJ, on the other hand, felt that he was just insulted. Who are you to tell me what my parents’ thoughts on mixed relationships? I live with those people every day. We are honest and open with every subject there is to talk about. If they felt that way, they would have told us by now! TJ was steaming.

Chuck didn’t like the arguing. He insisted that they all go into the house and confront TJ’s parents so that they could end this stupid discussion. The boys insisted and headed for the house. TJ was feeling quite confident about the whole situation. His family was very close and open to each other. No secrets were held.

They reached the house and reported how well the party turned out. Questions began to fall from TJ’s lips immediately. Mom, Dad, would it bother you if I choose to date outside my race?

The odd looks upon their faces were a result of where the question came from. Where is this coming from all of a sudden? his mother quickly replied.

We’re just curious, TJ replied, looking a bit worried that he might have been mistaken. You’re honest about everything, and I was explaining to the guys that we have a relationship between us where we can discuss anything.

Chuck and John anxiously waited for their answer.

His father spoke first. Well, son, we really haven’t thought about it. Your mother and I feel you should date awhile before you make any decision whether if the girl is White, Black, or whatever.

That’s right, dear, added TJ’s mom. We are really just concerned about your happiness. You can date whomever you choose, just make sure that’s what you want. However, your career is what you should be concentrating on right now. You’re still young for that kind of talk, and there is plenty of time for girls. His mother answered very modestly.

TJ smiled and was relieved that he had not been mistaken. He loved his family, and his family loved him. John was pretty amazed, and Chuck was just glad for TJ. Afterward, the boys retired to Thomas’s room for a sleepover. Thomas bragged, of course, but he eventually quieted down. After the pool house was cleaned, the boys headed to Thomas’s room. Later that night, Thomas stated that he was going to the kitchen for a late snack and offered the guys something. They refused, so Thomas started for the staircase. As he reached the bottom, he overheard his parents talking.

Look, Dan, you know I only said those things to TJ because I was following your lead. However, I thought we agreed that we wouldn’t let our children date out of their race. Why are you changing things now? questioned his mother.

Beth, I know what I said back then, but times have changed. It’s really not a big deal to me, and you shouldn’t get so uptight over this. It was just a rhetorical question, his dad replied, trying to comfort his wife.

Look, I work hard to get TJ where he wants to be in his acting career. He is not dating any other race, especially someone Black. None of our children are. I’m not racist. I just don’t believe one should mix our blood with theirs. I’m standing on this, Dan, either you behind me or against me. Thomas’s mother demanded an answer and demanded it right away.

Dan simply responded, Honey, I’m sure it wasn’t anything, but you know I’m not going to fight you on this. You know I stand behind you on whatever you decide. This kind of conflict, we just can’t have in our home. So let’s just drop it, Beth.

Thomas’s father did not run the house, his mother did. Leaning on the staircase wall with confusion in his mind was all he could do. He couldn’t believe his ears. He always thought that his family had a trustful relationship, and now that’s a lie. His dad’s speech on the lake was all that rang in his ears. Devastated and disgusted at the whole ordeal, his mind wondered. His family not only lied about their feelings, but they also hid their true feelings from him. Thomas’s perception of his parents was false. One could hear his heart race from the broken news, for he didn’t know whether to approach them or ignore them. He was ashamed and heartbroken. He slowly turned and walked upstairs to his room ever so quietly. As he entered his room, Chuck and John didn’t notice the disappointed look on his face. They were chatting about Kathy and how John needed to find someone for himself. TJ leaned against his door as if he was in slow motion. The noise from the door quickly got the attention of the boys.

Chuck immediately questioned him, Dude, what’s wrong?

TJ didn’t know what to say. He just boasted how dear his family was, but he felt that he should say something.

You were right, John. His voice cracked. I just overheard my mom and dad saying…that they had decided not to let us date someone Black. You could tell he was doing everything in his power to hold back the tears.

John couldn’t resist. I told you guys. You see, you two never listen to me!

Noticing the depression of this news to TJ, Chuck started in on John. Oh shut up! You think you know everything? You don’t know anything. Can’t you see that this is bothering him? What kind of a buddy are you?

John just wore a stupid look.

I’m so lost for words right now, I mean, I tell them everything, Thomas explained, but his hurt turned to anger. He felt as though he was utterly deceived. His anger grew with a passion for revenge, and he began to think irrational. They like keeping secrets. What else have they lied to me about? I thought we were open with each other. They just straight out lied to my face and then called us family, unreal. Thomas’s voice shivered, for he couldn’t contain the fury his heart consumed. His rage grew more and more as he reflected on the predicament.

Chuck saw revenge in Thomas’s eyes. He was concerned about him and shared this with him. Look, man, I know you’re hurt, but don’t do anything drastic. It’s not like you and Indie are getting married or anything. Heck, you might not even see her again after she leaves. All I’m saying is that those are your parents downstairs. They’re just looking out for you, not saying I agree with them ’cause I don’t, but you know they don’t understand us. Just wait until you’re grown and do whatever you want to do.

You know guys? It’s not so much as that. They always drill into me the importance of being honest, and I just feel that they’re being hypocritical and whatnot. I know I just met Indie tonight. I know I may never see her again, but hey…who’s next? What if I meet some Native American or Asian or, for that matter, another Black girl? They’ll just keep lying to me or something? It’s not cool, at all. Thomas was furious and confused.

Thomas wasn’t hearing that. He was pissed off. No, I think I’ll do what I want to do now. Why wait?

John was a bit surprised at how he was behaving. It’s no big deal, man. Your parents are going to want you to do a lot of things their way. You do it until you move out or become of age. You’re just upset over this whole thing. They’re your family.

Thomas was only looking for his friends to mind their business. He glanced at them out of the corner of his eyes that were red with fire. "Without honesty in a family, you have nothing. My
