Dedicated to the memory of my beloved brother George, whose remembered delight in the tales I would invent for him as a child encouraged me to continue creating stories.

    Prologue

As the hunters waited for unwary game high on a cliff, they each contemplated the mystery of the vehicle far below, wondering what had happened and if there were any survivors.

Shhh, said the first hunter Fred, I hear something, and just then, Graff appeared walking cautiously toward the vehicle, Norma a few steps behind.

Graff’s sense of danger present was immediately intensified as simultaneously the second hunter Joe loudly exclaimed, Holy shit, look at that! causing Graff to turn rapidly toward the sound as Fred raised his high-powered rifle, shooting Graff in his massive heart. Another gun report was heard as Joe fired his rifle and a second bullet embedded itself into Graff’s heart too.

Shit, Fred, Joe excitedly said, that looks like another one, as he aimed his rifle and managed to get one shot off toward Brock, hitting him in his leg.

C’mon, Fred, let’s get down there and see what we hit, I hope it wasn’t that woman. It sounded like she screamed in pain.

As the hunters rapidly descended, they could neither see nor believe the scene that unfolded after their bullets had hit their marks.

Mortally wounded, Graff used the last of his strength to tell his beloved Noom that he loved her.

After he had made his disappearance and as her mind retreated into welcome oblivion, Norma heard Graff’s voice speaking softly to her. Do not be afraid, my love, my spirit will always be near you, protecting you from harm.

    Part One

    The Ordeal

    Chapter One

The hunters had rapidly rappelled down the side of the cliff and were surprised to see only the woman who had obviously fainted; there was no sign of any other creature. And although they thoroughly searched the area for any telltale signs of an injured animal, there were none.

They picked Norma up and began to carry her back to where their vehicle was parked but noticed that her breathing was becoming shallower, and when she appeared to be going into shock, they realized she needed immediate medical attention. Calling in on Joe’s phone, they requested a medical helicopter for the woman to be transported to the nearest hospital.

Fearing ridicule, neither hunter would mention the creature they thought they had killed was a Bigfoot; instead. The story they told was that they had shot a bear, and it had run away before they were able to get to the woman who must have fainted from obvious fright.

After leaving the hospital, Fred and Joe retreated to their favorite watering hole where they often went to compare notes, each bragging about various kills they had made that day.

This time, it was different, each afraid to admit what they had seen was a Bigfoot; they were uncommonly quiet.

The ice was broken by Fred. That had to have been a bear … right, Joe? And Joe agreed.

But in Joe’s mind, he was already planning on visiting that area again. He’d heard so many Bigfoot tales and always claimed bullshit. Now he was certain they did exist, and boy, oh boy, wouldn’t he just be the hunter of hunters if he were able to actually capture one—alive or dead—probably make some good money, too.

Joe chuckled to himself as visions of guns, glory, and gold filled his mind.

    Chapter Two

The emergency hospital Norma had been airlifted to had often received patients that had been found after getting lost in one of the nearby forests. Nearly everyone had identification, or if not, the person who reported them missing would be able to identify them.

The female patient the two hunters found was different; other than a braided bracelet, she had no identification, and the bracelet appeared to be handmade, so it couldn’t have been traced for purchase. And too, her clothing was a bit strange; it looked as though it had been roughly cut and primitively sewn together and—this had them puzzled more than anything—the patient and her clothing had the distinct aroma of geraniums.

Jane Doe, as all unidentified females were referred to, had many of the hospital staff quite interested in her case. There was something about her blood sample that wasn’t quite right, and they wanted to do further testing. The only thing they knew for sure was that she was pregnant and that too seemed to have anomalies they were unfamiliar with.

Norma, feigning sleep, had overheard much of the whispered communications in her room and realized she would have to escape her hospital surroundings as soon as possible.

Hello, Jane, one of the nurses said as she greeted Norma. We are happy to see it looks like you will recover completely from your ordeal.

Hot tears immediately welled in Norma’s eyes as she remembered her time with the Ferryl and Graff had been anything but an ordeal; it was the happiest she had ever been in her entire life.

As difficult as it was for her to put her grief over Graff’s disappearance aside, she knew she needed to concentrate all her strength to protect her unborn son Todd against discovery.

The nurse then stated, We need to do another blood draw on you, the first one must have been contaminated somehow.

Norma immediately pulled herself up to a seated position and loudly announced, My name is not Jane Doe, it is Norma Chambers, and I refuse to have another blood draw. Now please tell me where are my personal items?

Although she now thought of herself more as Noom than Norma, it would be too hard and dangerous to explain to the hospital staff about her cut and swollen tongue, causing her to say her name as Noom instead of Norma to her mate Graff and sister Lall of the Ferryl clan.

The nurse, rather taken aback by the strength this patient exhibited, stammered Y … your things are there in the bag, as she indicated with pointed finger the underside of Norma’s hospital bed.

But, but, you cannot leave, the doctors wanted to do some testing, and we have no insurance information.

Norma feigned exhaustion again. I’m sorry if I was rude, Nurse, she said, I’m so tired, I need more rest. I will talk to the doctors tomorrow morning, will that be alright?

The nurse, having sympathy for her patient, gently replied, Of course, you just rest now and don’t worry about anything. She smiled at Norma as she left the room. Have a good night.

    Thank you, Norma replied.

After Norma retrieved her belongings, she formed a plan of escape as she speedily dressed.

She touched her bracelet, her beautiful marriage bracelet that Graff had so lovingly fashioned for her and decided to wear it on her right wrist, as many human females moved their wedding rings to their right hand, indicating widowhood.

She touched the seashell on her bracelet to her lips and prayed for Graff’s spirit to guide her and their unborn son Todd safely back to their home, the Ferryl clan.

    Chapter Three

A million thoughts went racing through Norma’s mind. Perhaps she should stay with the humans to be certain her birthing would be safe.

Considering Graff’s enormous size, she was concerned little Todd may have more of his father’s genes than hers, which could be problematic in delivery.

But thoughts of her own safety vanished when she realized her son would indeed carry his father’s genes and more than likely his father’s looks too, which would put him in danger if Norma chose to deliver him in a hospital. It would be apparent he was no ordinary child.

Norma waited until all the evening clamor ordinarily heard in hospitals had died down and the almost unnatural quiet had ensued before she stealthily left her room, taking with her
