If Chester’s dream should come true, what other exciting things await for Chester and Miss Katy?

    Chapter One

It was the beginning of May in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Spring had arrived. Birds were flying back from their nesting places in the south.

Chester, a Maine Coon cat, was dreaming the same dream he had dreamed many times before: beautiful land with luscious, soft dark-green grass, and wildflowers sprouting up could be seen. Birds were flying in the sky while others sat among the tall trees where beautiful sounds were heard. Many small animals were seen scampering here and there. A river with clear water within it moved slowly by a gentle breeze. On the side of the river stood a medium-sized animal with a long, bushy tail, helping itself to a taste of the cool water.

Chester woke with a startle, hearing a horn honking loudly. He ran to the open window and saw a large truck parked outside the apartment building that Miss Katy and he lived in. Two men opened a large door at the end of the truck, and out came a long metal ramp. On the side of the truck Chester read, Bob’s Haul and Delivery Service.

Am I glad I can read. I just can’t talk the human language. Oh, I also want to let you know, just because I can’t talk the human language, I still can understand what is being said, Chester thought to himself.

There were very few birds to watch and listen to in Oklahoma City. The snow had disappeared, leaving the concrete sidewalks and streets only to be seen. Smoke was coming out of the factories, and noisy traffic consisting of cars and trucks blowing their horns was about all one could see or hear daily. Each time Chester would have this dream he would wake up hoping he would be at this beautiful place. He yawned and stretched and scurried down the steps into the kitchen.

What! My bowl of food and bowl of water is not at the bottom of my white cupboard. Miss Katy has never forgot to feed me! Chester remarked to himself. Those men ate my food, drank my water and took my dishes. Well, I’ll take care of them.

Chester started jumping up and down and ran speedily around the kitchen, making loud meow noises. The two men ignored him and carried out the kitchen table and four chairs.

Chester heard Miss Katy call his name, Chester, and the magic word, ride. Chester grabbed his collar from the peg of his white food cupboard. It was green leather with brown designs through it, and many crystal white jewels protruded outward on it. It made him look very handsome. It really showed up against his long orange-colored coat of hair. He ran outside with the collar in his mouth and jumped into Miss Katy’s arms.

Chester, we are moving to the country, Miss Katy said excitingly.

Chester had no idea what country was, but he did not care; he always was ready to go for a ride with Miss Katy.

Miss Katy opened a can of egg and cheese with white sauce and put it in Chester’s bowl. She then filled his other bowl with cool, fresh water.

Now eat your breakfast, Chester, then we will drive to our new home, Miss Katy said.

Chester gobbled his breakfast, drank some water, and jumped on the front seat of the car. Miss Katy opened the window just enough so Chester could feel the cool breeze and smell all the different scents as they drove. Shortly after noon they arrived at their new home.

Chester, here is our new home, Miss Katy said. We now live outside the small town called Sweetwater, Oklahoma.

She carried Chester in her arms as they walked up the porch steps to the entrance of the house. It was a dream come true! Chester couldn’t believe his eyes or ears. What he saw was astounding, and what he heard were beautiful sounds coming from the trees, and the aromas he smelled were unbelievable.

I am so hungry. Is it time to eat? Chester asked himself.

It was a three-story Victorian house painted in yellow with white shutters; a white railing in front of the porch wrapped around the entire house ending in the front again. There was a balcony on the second floor with white railing in front also. In the back of the house was a white gazebo with many trees and a white shed. Miss Katy brought Chester in the kitchen.

Your favorite lunch, Chester, chicken and gravy, with a bowl of dry food and water, Miss Katy said.

Chester gobbled it up. He then watched as the men carried all the items from the truck into the house. Miss Katy started opening boxes and putting things away in the cupboards. Chester started to crave his catnip toys. He walked around and started smelling boxes hoping to find them.

Now where could my catnip toys be? Chester asked himself.

Miss Katy would put Chester’s toys in a plastic bag, poured fresh catnip over them, and sealed the bag up. Every two days she would give Chester three cat toys from the bag, pick up the other three toys and place them in the bag of catnip. The men had finished carrying everything in the house. They honked the truck horn as they drove off.

Chester couldn’t believe how peaceful and quiet his new home was. Chester walked around the boxes on the kitchen floor, smelled them, hoping to find those catnip toys. He started to investigate the rest of the house. Most of the rooms were empty. He walked into a small room, and there were the two wing-backed chairs, wood rocking chair, TV console, wood end table that held magazines, Grandfather’s clock, and his cat bed. The catnip toys were nowhere to be seen.

Oh, it is no use. Miss Katy forgot to pack my catnip toys. What am I going to do without my toys and catnip, he thought with a worried look on his face! He then heard beautiful music coming from the woods nearby. Chester could smell something that was very calming to him. He forgot about his catnip toys and decided to go outside and see where the beautiful music was coming from.

Chester walked on to the front porch and sat for a while. Checking out the surroundings for safety, he walked down the wooden steps of the porch and started on his adventure. The dark green grass felt so soft to his white paws. He laid in the luscious, soft green grass beside the tall trees where a cool breeze was gently blowing. As he listened to the beautiful music the birds were singing, he became very relaxed and fell asleep.

Chester, Chester, come, Chester! cried Miss Katy. Waking up with a startle, hearing his name, Chester instantly got up and ran toward the house. Oh Chester, I was worried when I couldn’t find you in the house, Miss Katy said.

She picked Chester up and held him close as she carried him into the house. There on the floor in the kitchen was a large bowl of tuna and gravy. Chester was quite a gravy lover. He liked turkey, chicken, beef, and tuna as long as it had gravy.

It was starting to get dark outside. I am glad I am inside the house. I haven’t lived here long enough to be out in the dark, Chester thought to himself. Miss Katy was in the sitting room rocking in her rocking chair and watching a program on TV. There on the rug were Chester’s catnip toys. Oh, I am so happy. My catnip toys have been found, Chester thought as he rolled all over them. Chester made growling and meowing sounds as he tossed his toys up in the air and caught them. He quietly sneaked up on one that looked like a mouse. He grabbed the mouse in his mouth, tossed it in the air, and caught it in his mouth again. The mouse started blinking lights from its eyes.

Now what could this hole in the wall be? Chester asked himself.

He walked slowly up to the hole, which had polished brick all around it and some kind of screen in front of it. He looked inside and saw it led to another room. He walked slowly in between the screen and the polished bricks and then through the hole and stepped into an empty room. It had all these shelves on one side of the room and big doors with panels of glass on the other side of the room. He peered through the big doors and saw a hallway. Chester walked back through the big hole, jumped on Miss Katy’s lap, and purred while she stroked his back, head, and rubbed his tummy.

Well, Chester, I see you have discovered the see-through fireplace, Miss Katy said while she brushed the ash residue off from Chester’s beautiful orange coat of fur. What did you think of that? You must remember, when it gets cold outside, you won’t be able to walk through the fireplace like you just did. There will probably be wood burning inside of it to keep us warm.

Miss Katy turned off the TV and carried Chester up the long open spiral stairway to her bedroom. Chester snuggled close to Miss Katy on top of the covers, and they both went to sleep.

    Chapter Two

It was still dark, and a loud screaming sound could be heard in the early morning hours. Chester woke up and jumped on
