About the Author
To my dad, Earl W. Balzer, a loving father and grandfather who is greatly missed.
He always encouraged me to write stories.
Story Time
Children obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
—Ephesians 6:1
Katie and Jeffrey were playing outside on their bicycles when they suddenly heard their mother calling to them.
Katie and Jeffrey, it is time to get ready for bed.
Aww, Mother, do we have to?
Katie groaned.
We want to keep riding our bikes,
Jeffrey whined.
You can play outside again tomorrow after school,
Mother said. It is now time for your baths and bed.
Don't want a bath.
Jeffrey scowled as he angrily scuffed his sneaker-clad foot.
The quicker you get cleaned up and ready for bed, the sooner we can have story time,
replied their mother. Jeffrey's eyes brightened at the suggestion, and he quickly dashed up the stairs with the family dog, Candy, barking and chasing after his heels.
Soon, Katie and Jeffrey were all bathed and snuggled in their pajamas, sitting on Katie's bed with Candy between them, waiting patiently for Mother to come and tell them their bedtime story. They loved listening to their mother and father share stories with them. The stories were usually about an animal or some sort of creature. God made everything, and even animals can teach us lessons.
What is our story about tonight, Mother?
Jeffrey asked.
Tonight, our story is about a little lamb that had trouble being obedient to her parents.
Lucy the Disobedient Lamb
Lucy lived with her parents on a green, grassy farm in Ireland. During the day, they munched on tender young grass and drank from a cool bubbling stream. In the evenings, their farmer would lead them into the barn. Lucy loved the barn, for it was always filled with fresh straw into which she snuggled for her bed. Lucy was a cute little lamb. She was creamy-white with a black face and black hooves. Lucy loved life and wanted to live it to the fullest. However, she had a difficult time understanding the difference between obeying and having fun. Lucy's parents worried over her lack of obedience.
One rule that Lucy had a hard time obeying was to stay away from the cliffs that were on the edge of the pasture. Most of the time, Lucy's parents were nearby. If she wandered too close to the cliffs, they immediately bleated for her to return to their side and admonished her for disobeying. Lucy would apologize for her carelessness and would promise to do better. But as time passed, she would once again ignore her parent's instructions and would wander close to the edge of the cliffs.
One bright spring day, Lucy moved closer to the cliffs without either of her parents noticing her. She could smell the ocean water that sprayed high into the air as it hit the rocks. She stared out across the ocean, and, off in the distance, she could see a ship sailing to a faraway land. Lucy wanted to know what it would be like to feel and taste the ocean water. The little lamb looked back toward her parents and saw that her mother and dad were busy nibbling the grass and sweet clover. Slowly, Lucy ventured closer to the cliff's edge, all the while telling herself that a quick peek over the side of the cliff certainly would not cause any harm. Inch by inch, she moved closer until she could finally peer over the edge. Below her, the waves crashed against large jagged rocks. The sound of the water hitting against the rocks was deafening. So loud was the noise that Lucy lost sight of her parents and her dangerous position.
Lucy noticed a rock just below her. It looked almost like a shelf on a wall, and it did not appear to be very far away. Certainly, with a little jump, she could land safely on it and be closer to the ocean spray. Without thinking twice, Lucy sprang down to the rock shelf and landed with ease. She definitely had a closer view of the water. She closed her eyes, listened to the sound of the waves, and sniffed the salty air. Next, she opened her eyes, stared a long time at the swirling waves, and wished that she could dip one dainty lamb foot into the sea water.
Finally, Lucy decided it was time to start back to the pasture above before anybody missed her. She planned to sneak back another day. Lucy looked up at the ledge from which she had come. She did not recall the
