Chapter 1
The Flying Basket
How are you hanging in there, Ms. Wolfy? Are you comfortable lounging in Sparky's basket?
asked Fate.
Wolfy's paws held, relaxed, onto the basket rim. Her face blushed with excitement. Her facial hair was blowing with the strong wind, and her nose pointed straight ahead.
This is so exciting, Fate. What's that underneath us?
asked Wolfy.
Fate replied, It's called the Marin Headlands, and to the left is San Francisco.
My dad told me that San Francisco was his first stop when he came from Switzerland,
said Wolfy.
Fate said, How exciting to travel that far and make so many memories. Now it's our turn, Wolfy. We will make lots of memories together.
Have you been here before, Fate?
asked Wolfy.
Fate replied, Yes, Flo and I flew this far once. We were not supposed to, but you know how it is when your parents say no. You've just got to do it, right?
Both laughed and nodded in agreement.
Q: Do you ignore your parents' advice sometimes?
Let's stop at the Point Bonita Lighthouse that's how far Flo and I went the last time,
Fate said.
They landed on the roof of the lighthouse and the smell of salty air hit them. The thundering sound of the waves crashing against the shore was comforting and thrilling at the same time. Wolfy climbed out of the basket, and both were resting side by side.
Is it hard for you to fly with me hanging beneath you? Is the basket too heavy?
asked Wolfy.
Nope, I'll tell you when you have to go on a diet!
Fate giggled and nudged Wolfy.
A large pod of pelicans flew over them. The last pelican saw the two of them and flew a circle and landed beside them.
The pelican said, Hi, dudettes. What's up? You guys are an unlikely pair…or,
and he hesitated a moment, is this your lunch?
he looked teasingly at Fate.
Lunch!
screeched Wolfy. We're friends!
Wow, dudette, don't cough up a hair ball here. I was just kidding,
said the pelican.
No big deal, but Wolfy is right,
chuckled Fate. We're friends!
That's about the coolest friendship I have ever seen,
said the pelican. Oh, got to catch up with my squadron. By the way, I'm Charlie, and you?
Wolfy replied, This is Fate, and I am Wolfy!
We're heading down to Muir Beach to fish. Happy day, dudettes,
said Charlie.
Off he flew, flapping his wings quickly to catch up.
Down below, two boys were running around with their backpacks on their backs. They walked half a mile from the parking lot down through a tunnel and then over a bridge with ocean water crashing on both sides of the lighthouse.
"Look. The smelly are playing together," said Wolfy.
Fate and Wolfy were sitting side by side, restful on the roof, absorbing their surroundings. A sudden gust of wind picked up the basket and blew it off the roof. It landed right beside the boys, and one of them picked it up.
What's that, Liam?
asked Tim.
I dunno,
responded Liam.
Both looked up to the sky when Tim spotted Fate and Wolfy on the roof. They were both startled and jumped up on full alert.
Wolfy screeched, Nooooo, my basket. Hold onto it!
Q: Have you ever lost a hat because of the wind?
It happened so suddenly that Fate had no chance to react to it. The boys were pointing their fingers toward the two of them.
You think it's theirs?
Liam questioned.
No way,
said Tim. Is that a rat or a mouse?
he wondered. Dad, Mom, come quick and look what we found. There's a bird and a mouse on the roof. I think they lost their basket. Come quick!
The father turned around and walked toward the boys and said, Say what?
They were both pointing at the roof and said together, Look up there, Dad!
Their dad was taken by surprise by the sight. Wow, Melanie, come look at this. The kids are right. A hawk and a rat are up there, and the rat is still alive!
he stated, surprised.
Melanie rushed over to see for herself. All four were standing there, looking up and wondering what was going on.
Is that bird going to eat the rat, Mom?
asked Tim.
Unfortunately, Tim, that's a big possibility,
Mom replied.
Do you think this basket is theirs, Dad?
Liam asked.
Patrick, their dad, took the basket in his hands, looked closely, and said, No, Liam, it's a fact that birds and rats don't have baskets, but people do.
But it fell from the sky, Dad!
exclaimed Liam.
I am sure it belongs to one of those people over there. Just put it on the railing here, and I'm sure someone will look for it,
said Patrick.
Unwillingly, Liam put the basket on the railing. Then he saw a tiny shirt and pants inside the basket along with a pressed flower. He looked at them and nodded his head.
"Guess you're right, Dad. It must belong to another kid because it has doll clothes and some kind
