    GLOSSARY VOODOO

    Introduction

Voodoo, also spelled vudù is derived from the African term vodun meaning spirit. Voodooism can be traced back to the Yoruba people, who lived in present-day areas of Benin, Nigeria and Togo in the 18th and 19th centuries. The roots of this religion, however, date back 6000-10,000 years. Voodoo is practiced in the areas of Africa from which it originated, as well as in Haiti and some areas of Louisiana in the United States of America, taking different forms from area to area. Voodoo beliefs and practices are very different than what you see in the movies and are based on a spiritual framework.

    Christianity's Influence

The Voodoo religion is said to be polytheistic (believing in multiple gods), and has various names such as Vodun, Vodou and Vudu, but their religious beliefs are all based on the old African culture and have never changed. These include the worship of free spirits in the form of male gods and female goddesses, and they also practice animal sacrifices and ancestor worship. But it has been seen that Voodoo in the cities of Haiti and Louisiana has mostly African beliefs mixed with those of Roman Catholicism, and they have begun to worship Loa, Which were spirits associated with canonized Catholic saints. These people do this by worshipping the spirits of Christian saints in a way that is actually forbidden in Christianity. They also say that their God is a remote God, and not the biblical one, as per strict interpretations of Western Christian beliefs.

    Voodoo Facts and Myths

Mostly you can see that Voodoo is similar to those who invoke spirits and are into occult practices that are condemned around the world by many different religions. Many people have their own perceptions and think that these Voodoo believers are practicing things like witchcraft, making crude dolls that have pins stuck in them, and dealing with zombies first hand. But more than that, this religion is actually one of the oldest and most important in the Americas and one that is deeply imbued with traditional West African culture. They believe that their ancestors inspire them in the form of spirits and that their actions possess valuable qualities for the development of the community.

    Voodoo in modern world

As seen in the modern world, many people have accepted Voodoo as a legal religion that has its own values and works for the betterment of the community. Many voodoo practitioners are seen as actually honoring the Judeo-Christian God, even though they do so with their African pagan dances, just as people of other religions are said to worship God in their own unique ways. They also believe on their ancestors, so they are revered for their core values and wisdom. In the modern world, this religion has spread to most American countries that have learned a lot from its historical presence.

    Difference between Hoodoo and Voodoo

Voodoo is a word that comes from the French Vodu. It is an ancient pagan religion that is a mixture of beliefs and traditions. Voodoo is a religion that is practiced in Haiti. You can still find many practitioners of this religion in Haiti. This religion that involves syncretism believes in a distant creator who appears to be God. It refers to how Bondye and Voodouists believe that he does not interfere in the daily affairs of human beings. However, there are spirits enslaved to Bondye. Voodouists try to please these spirits called loas since there are loas for every aspect of life. Voodouists indulge in many practices and dance and play music, to please these spirits to make life easier for people. Voodoo practitioners who were called upon to perform their rituals to propitiate the loa and thus Bondye were labelled as Bokor.

Europeans first learned of these traditions and practices in the French slave colonies in the 18th century and tried to suppress these activities by forcibly converting African slaves to Christianity.

Hoodoo is a type of folk magic that incorporates many practices and traditions from different African and American cultures. In English, Hoodoo is often described as a magical incantation, although it is also used to refer to the practitioner of magic. Hoodoo is more of a system of magical practices that have been passed down through generations. Hoodoo practitioners do not invoke lohi as in the case of voodoo.

    Differences between Hoodoo and Voodoo:

Voodoo is a religion, while Hoodoo is folk magic.

    -  There is a creator or God called Bondye in the Voodoo religion, while there is no such thing in
