Chapter One

Are You Saying I’m Stupid?

Are you saying I’m stupid? Gladys asked the man who had been trying to teach her.

No, the man said. I’m just not sure this is something you should be doing.

Gladys looked up at the man. 

It seemed she always had to look up at everybody.  She was so short and he was so tall.

God wants me to be a missionary to China, Gladys said.

The man liked Gladys. She was a hard worker and she loved God. But she didn’t have much schooling. She was, after all, just a house cleaner.  She was only a maid.

Chinese is a difficult language to learn, the man said in a gentle voice. He tried to think of the nicest way to say it but she had to know the truth. "I don’t think you will be able to learn it.

If God wants me to tell the Chinese people about Jesus, Gladys replied, He will give me the ability to learn the language.
