    She looked up from her prone position on the ground. A hand extended, its thumb tucked neatly into its side, becoming one with the palm. She understood. This hand, too, was safe. Slowly, carefully she brought herself to a standing position. She expected excruciating pain from the beating she’d just taken. But there was no pain. Not even a tingling sensation.

    He started leading, she followed. House after house passed. She heard another voice, like a dream, calling out to her. She kept walking. Filled with a sense of peace, she felt no need to stop now.

    Just a little further. The words entered her ears like honey on a rough throat. I’ve got a precious place where we will sit together.

    She was surprised at how little energy it was taking. It was a hot night. She knew that, but it didn’t bother her. She knew she had a broken leg, but there was no pain as she limped on.
