    Alacron Rising - Kae Galla

    Prologue

It is said that a child born during the darkest of nights, All Hallow’s Eve, born of dark and of light from above and below, shall join with the progeny of Lucifer himself to command the underworld, creating a bridge between worlds.

The Order of Alacron have been the keepers of the prophecy for centuries, entrusted with the truth behind the importance of seeing the prophecy coming to fruition. As head of the order, it is Samuel’s responsibility to find any soon-to-be mothers who have the potential of fulfilling this momentous destiny and remain by the child’s side to ensure its safety, as well as provide a proper education and training.

Little did he know, that very young whom he committed his entire life to finding would be born to his brother Cain’s new wife, Ann. The young wasn’t supposed to come for weeks. Samuel never even considered that Ann could be carrying the key to everything, but as darkness engulfs the valley early afternoon on All Hallow’s Eve, Ann screams through yet another contraction.

Samuel and his brother were born to a white witch and have always embraced their legacy. That would work in favor of the light side of the prophecy. As for the young’s mother? She is an Underling. Concealing her identity, she moved to the surface realm, where she met and fell in love with Cain.

Ann never expected to be able to conceive, let alone so quickly after their marriage. As an underling, Ann’s lifespan is indefinite; her magical abilities and strengths far surpass that of a human, and her blood runs far hotter.

Not many in this realm know of Underlings. The religious focus on heaven and hell, believing that the humans here on Earth are smack dab in the middle, when in reality things are far more complicated than that. There is a realm between the surface where humans inhabit; yes, there is what they consider hell in the deepest part of the underworld where the damned and demons dwell but in between all of that is where the Underlings reside. Supernatural beings who can survive in any of the realms but prefer their own. Unlike hell, which only has one way in or out, there are several portals and gates for Underlings to use in order to travel back and forth. The catch is that those gates and portals only open on a full or new moon and the occasional eclipse. Legend has it that the Underlings originally came to Earth from distant planets, their alien technology and abilities making them an easy target of fear and hatred.

A piercing scream draws Samuel’s attention back to his brother’s small cottage.

No doubt the villagers have heard her by now.

Situated not far from one of the portals, the residents of this particular village are quite the superstitious bunch. They’ve seen the occasional slip up by an Underling who reveals too much; that in itself isn’t a bad thing, but the strict religion they practice has only fueled their fear rather than their curiosity.

Within the hour, several villagers with pitchforks and torches begin their descent on the small cottage in the woods. Samuel and the other members of the order maintain a tight border around the home. They have no desire to harm the villagers, but they will do whatever necessary to protect the young.

Sadly, their protective perimeter is drastically outnumbered by the riotous villagers, and soon they are overrun. Hateful, slanderous words the villagers normally spat behind the backs of the couple as they walked the streets of the marketplace were nothing compared to the violence they show on this All Hallows Eve. Pitchforks, fists, staffs, an occasional dull sword, and worse, the torches they throw onto the roof of the small cottage prove to be too much for the Order to fight back.

The innocent cries of a newborn pierce the night air.

As smoke begins to fill the room where the young one breathes its first breath, Samuel and Cain’s sister quickly wrap the young in a blanket and gently place the precious bundle in its mother’s arms. As a midwife, Sara’s main concern had been bringing the child into the world safely, but now that the young one is here, they have even more to worry about. Moving the new mother at this stage is too risky, not to mention difficult given the circumstances.

With tears in her eyes and one last look at the young
