Galápagos with love - Ada Escalante Steffensen

    Dedication

This book, hopefully the first of many, I dedicate in first place to my mother, to whom I offered that one day I’d tell her story, both the good and the less pleasant. But since she is now gone, I am missing many details. So, what I will tell you will be from my memory and what she used to tell when she would make memory of the past. To my daughters, so that they may know more about whom their mother is; the exotic and wonderful life that I have lived so far and what I still have to live by the grace of God. May everything lived not be in vain, but for the inspiration of their lives. I also dedicate this to my husband, for his patience and help in difficult times.

And very in particular to my friend and a very close friend of my mother’s, María Eugenia Pinto, who was always there in the difficult and happy moments, who made mom smile when sadness invaded her, and who accompanied her on all the adventures each time she travelled to Guayaquil. Thank you for taking care of her when I couldn’t. I will always be grateful to you.

Thank you Lord, my God, for helping me walk and always getting up when I stumble.

"Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.

Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them." Psalms 126:5-6

    Introduction

I felt the sea breeze caressing my face, the sun’s rays like swords piercing my skin. I’m alive; it’s the only thing I thought at the time, everything else didn’t matter anymore. Hearing the sound of the waves hitting the rocks, I knew it was the last time I would see you, and 43 years have passed.

That summer morning when I was going to get on the plane that would transport me to Guayaquil, little did I know what life would bring me. Abandoning you Galapagos, has been the most painful thing I have ever felt. I thought of all the wonders I was going to experience, leaving all my memories behind, almost running away without realizing that what I was losing was greater than I would imagine. This is where it all started for me and ended for Mom.

For many years, every time they asked me how I got to Norway, I told them the story of my mother, in broad strokes of course.

Those who listened were shocked and told me to write her story. But I thought people were exaggerating. Now after so many years, I have wondered if it is true. Besides being my mother’s story, it’s my story too; it’s the reason why I’m in Norway.

Although I haven’t been able to tell everything in this book, I wanted you to know the most important things, although perhaps one day I will tell the whole story and the anecdotes.

The only thing I want to emphasize is that my mother always tried to escape, but could not. No one could help her; she was in a strange country and without anyone who could help; where the man had the power over the woman and the children.

So, one beautiful day in my life came Professor Francisco Navarro Lara. Thank you teacher, you are a genius. Thank you for encouraging people to write.
