    For Di-Dee

    Our Celestial Family

The day had arrived. I was ecstatic. I was filled with radiant warmth from the bubble of happiness which had opened up in my solar plexus; the warm glow that precedes the arrival of something which you have been waiting for, for a long time. Since the day of the announcement of the Pu’uwai Ceremony, I had been having difficulty focusing on anything else.

The calm morning held the promise that today, Humanity’s light would flare, sending a beacon out into the Cosmos to signal a great leap forward in its spiritual evolution.

The year was 2047. I remembered clearly the shock I had experienced on a day in January 2019 when I opened an email from an environmental group. The email informed me that there were fifty billion animals alive at that time who were destined to be used for food that year. The figure floored me. Fifty billion!! Other internet sources provided similar estimates; some were higher.  Each one of those animals was a sentient being.  This figure, extreme as it was, did not include marine creatures; would that add another twenty, thirty billion to the total?

The implications were overwhelming. The estimate was for one year, 2019. How many beings had been killed over the last 10 years, or for that matter for the period that I had been alive?

It was an unimaginable number, preposterous; offensive in so many ways. Wasn’t it? How could it not
