    CHAPTER I

    First steps in Woodhill prison.

Learn about all tricks of the prisoners.

It was a rainy day in February 2021. My first day at work started with joining the long queue

in front of Woodhill prison. New prison officers were anxious at the line of people to enter the building.

"Will we have the 2 weeks training induction? Asked one of the new starters who left Bedford

    prison a few weeks ago.

By listening to their conversation, I thought it is good that I will have proper security training.

My thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of the metal doors which were slammed loudly.

I got my gate pass (the form of ID to enter the prison) and I ended up on an hour of training with security upstairs.

In charge of the security was a very clever man. He told the new prison officers that my job

is the most dangerous one to prescribe the medications.

Everybody knows that medication can be used in prisons as a currency. Most of the inmates

will try to conceal it, steal it or sell it to reduce their drug debts.

The training is continued with the impressed listeners. I learnt in one hour how not to go to the pub,

not to put my details on Facebook and keep my mouth shut about my work. If you drink too much

in the pub, you can slip a few words out about some of our notorious criminals like Charles Bronson and it will be not advisable.

The training was brilliant. I had the prison keys in my hands, the next day which I placed in the wrong slot of the keys place and set the screaming alarm for the whole building. But it was just

me in the beginning, naive and new to the prison service at that time.

When I looked at myself now, I wonder how many changes I went through. My anxiety in the beginning just to open the multiple gates with the prison keys was gone in a few days. A confident and strong person was growing inside of me. I felt no fear and no emotions towards the people who had done the most terrible crime. It was just my job to deal with them. My work which I love.

Let’s learn about the tricks which prisoners prepared for you. When prison officers or doctors start their prison work, what do they need to know. It will save them from any injuries or harm.

Trick number 1: If you are going to the wing, the best advice is to look at the floors about where

you walk. The common trick is to put washing liquid over the floor, especially in front of the officers room. The dream of every inmate is to watch how the prison officers or staff fall and break their bones. There is a rule in every prison, do not run. If you walk normally, you can spot it in

    advance.

    ––––––––

Trick number 2: If you see the inmate with their socks in their hands walking along the corridor,

they are not going to wash their clothes in the washing machine. There will be a tuna can in the socks. It is ready made weapon. It is still classified as an offensive weapon and prisoners can be prosecuted for ABH (actual bodily harm) in case they use it.

Trick number 3: Prisoners love their kettles. You can do a lot of things with it and it is not tea or coffee. If inmates use the boiling water from the kettle and put some sugar in it, it will stick to the burning skin by leave scars there forever. I remember the prisoner Carlos, he splashed the boiling water on the prison officers through the observation panel. Finally, when I came to see him one

day, there was a big plastic frame look like the greenhouse in front of his door. The cell door is

not a solid one and there are always some gaps on the right side, which can also be used for boiling

    liquid attacks.

Trick number 4: The dirty protests with urine and faeces were very popular. You should not see

the prisoner if he is on the dirty protest and covered in shit. He needs to have a shower and a cleaned cell before he can be reviewed. The separate version of the dirty protest is spitting saliva over the prison officers. We had a prisoner who was a Hepatitis C positive. His favourite trick was to spit over the staff and officers particularly targeting their eyes.

Every prisoner knows their disease. It can be Hepatitis B,C, HIV. Corona virus also became the popular weapon in saliva during Covid pandemic in 2020-2021, when they spit on emergency workers to infect them. The prosecution is hard in this case. The attempt to throw unknown liquid

in the face, especially in the eyes classified as a hazardous liquid, which has a longer sentence. If you spit at the prison officer and infect them with your disease, you can get up to 18 months to 2-5 years added to your current sentence.

If an unknown liquid was thrown over their uniform, it is analysed by a forensic expert. It can be usually urine, which is humiliating, but it is still an assault.

Trick number 5: There are two categories of electrical tricks, which you need to be aware of.

Remember that there are highly skilled electricians and plumbers among the inmates and they

know what you don’t know. They will use their skills against you.

The prisoner Jack was so proud of his trick, that he explained it to me during his review. There was

3 holes on the wall after removal of an electrical socket. The prisoner used parts of the metal fork and shower gel. He placed it in 3 holes and connected it. Nobody knows how he got a metal fork

as all spoons and forks in prisons are from the plastic. Unfortunately, metal knives, forks and

weapons are still contraband in the UK prisons. Luckily, the Senior Officer on the wing noticed his

unusual activities and called a certified electrician to sort it out.

The other case of electrical trick was more serious.  Thanks to Intelligence Service who monitored it and intervened in time. The genius crafty con attached two dangerous wires to the ceiling lamp. It was designed to deliver an electrical shock, if you touch it. The picture of this lamp with wires is placed on display in our administrative building as a reminder for all prisoner officers and staff to be careful.

Trick number 6: I had mentioned previously the plumbers among the inmates. They attach condoms with drugs, usually Spice, to the wire and flush them in the toilet. It gets delivered to

another cell better than any parcel service. How they get the map of the drainage, nobody

knows. Staff do not have the access to any maps, but prisoners know it all.

    ––––––––

Trick number 7: The drones are a problem for any prison. As the highest security prison, we have

one of the drone organisers named Jonny. He was part of the biggest drones airlift in Birmingham with drugs that cost over £500,000 to deliver in prisons. The 7 prisons were targeted. He called it

a commercial operation. He got 10 years’ sentences for it.

The most convenient places are at open markets near the prisons. The criminals know about it and

they prefer usually the weekends when the staff shortage is more prominent. Most the prisons use wire shielding against drones and helicopters. Guernsey prison became the first place in the UK

to use electrical disruptors for drones. It can cost up to 150,000-250,000 which depending on the size of the prison.

Trick number 8: Let’s talk about another favourite thing for the prisoners known as a hooch. It is

an alcoholic beverage from fruits, sugar and crumbled bread which is very popular. I had a patient by the nickname of Uncle. When prison officers found 10 litres of hooch in his cell, he stated that it is not his hooch. He just keeps it for his friend. He can do it to sign off his drug debts, but he can get up to 10 days added to his sentence, if he is caught with it for the first time. The sentence increases every time with every hooch found in his cell.

Trick number 9: This one is about the fire tricks and flooding. We have false fire alarms and real fire alarms every day. It is becoming the normal thing as most of them were false, but some of them are real. Some of the prisoners learn the way that if you want to get toilet paper, press the fire alarm. Everybody will appear in your cell quicker than a speeding bullet.

We had a prisoner who loves to set the cell fires. He always takes his belongings to the next cell

so when he sets fire to his bed in his cell all his items are not affected. For more effect, he wraps himself in toilet paper and stands in the middle of the cell waiting for the prison officers to turn up

    to save him.

The other trick was done by another prisoner involved the fire extinguisher. He attached the string

to the door handle and another end was connected with the fire extinguisher. When the prison officer opened the door, there was a nasty surprise for him. Of course, if it will be another inmate opens this door, he will get a punch in his face for such a trick. That’s why there are not too many handles on the doors in prisons.

Trick number 10: Be ready, that one day you will be approached by a member of staff and asked

with the sweatiest voice to take the brown sealed enveloped to wing number 1 and leave it in the tray for the prisoner. You don’t know this prisoner and what’s inside of the envelope, but they are asking you for a simple favour. Remember one rule. DO NOT TAKE ANY ENVELOPES OR ANY ITEMS TO THE PRISONERS.

I always remember security training, when we were told, that prisoners will ask you for a small favour, which looks very innocent. It will be their try of the boundaries to see if they can use you.

You can expect it from the prisoners, but when you are approached by a member of staff which

you know with such a favour request, it is very upsetting. Remember those nasty people can be anywhere. The answer No, will be the right answer for it. Do not forget to report it to the security.

Trick number 11: The work of the prison doctors is very challenging. Every prisoner tells you

that they should not be in prison because they had not done this crime and they were just walk in around. In their opinion, they should be in the psychiatric hospital, which they consider as an exit way to freedom. They are requesting the prison doctor to do the referral to the psychiatric units.

    ––––––––

Luckily, the Ministry of Justice does not accept reports from the Independent Psychiatry service, when a prisoner pays up to £1400 for their Independent Psychiatry reports. MOJ accept only psychiatric reports from 2 prison doctors, which is a very clever decision. Then MOJ can accept

it or reject it. It can take up to 28 days for this process. Some of the prisoners forget that they can still be returned prison after treatment in a psychiatric hospital. They can also stay in a psychiatric unit longer then their actual sentence.

Trick number 12: Let’s talk about medications is prisons. Everybody wants from the psychiatrist

antipsychotics to sedate themselves or ADHD medication which is a stimulant. Inmates just love

to crush it, especially Concerta and sniff it. It makes them feel high for a while. That’s why you have some 60-year-old men telling you that still have a childhood disease called ADHD.

Another popular medication on request is pregabalin. They sell it and buy it from each other on

the dark prison market as prison doctors, especially psychiatrists don’t prescribe it in prisons. I

remember a prisoner who promised to kill the GP in prison as he reduced and stopped his pregabalin.

The next popular prison drug is diazepam. Inmates tell you all kinds of stories so that they can

not swallow their food and they need liquid diazepam. When you close the cell door, prison

officers observed them eating nicely their sandwiches without any problems. The reason is that liquid diazepam costs more among the prisoners on the prison dark market. They can swallow it, then vomit it back and sell it to each other.

Trick number 13: Prisoners forget that there is a clever eye of CCTV watching their movements.

I had the Intelligence report one day about two of my patients, who attached their mirror to the wire from one cell to the next cell. The package of diverted Quetiapine was attached to the mirror. When I stopped this medication for the prisoner who was diverting it, he wrote a long letter stating how bad he felt without his Quetiapine. And his friend inmate also filled out an application form to request Quetiapine to be prescribed for him as he suddenly developed voices over the night telling him to harm people. However, he can not describe clearly these voices and why he needs this medication for it.

Trick number 14: The prison drugs market is always in demand in every prison. Some of the dealers can go back to prison to earn up to £85,000-95,000 per year from it. Unfortunately, some

of the staff in every prison can be involved in drug trafficking. The visitors are always used as a carrier by smuggling it in their back passage or even using the kid’s nappies.

Spice is a big problem for all prison services. The mixture of synthetic cannabinoids can be different every month. Drug dealers use prisons as their lab tests. One month it can be one type

of Spice which makes inmates feel like a Zombi. The next month it can be another mixture of the chemicals in Spice, which cause a different presentation. In any way, they lead to a sudden drop

in glucose, which can end up with the unknown cause of the prisoner’s death. Nobody knows, what this inmate used from the drugs and when he used it. Prisoners do not know, if Fentanyl was added to the Spice or not as it can be fatal for them.

Trick number 15: Keep your prison set of keys hidden from the eyes of the prisoners. They can look at your key, if you are holding it in your hands and walking with it along the wing. The exact copy of your keys will appear the next day to open the gates which they like to be open.

One day I was approached by the prisoner on the wing when nobody was around. He asked me

with the sweatiest voice Miss, can you open this door for me? He pointed at the exit gate from

the wing. I answered him I am a visitor and I can not do it. Then I reported him to a Senior Officer. When we looked together with the officer for this inmate as I don’t know his name, he disappear in a second. We found him on the ground floor hiding from us. He had a warning from SO do not try this trick any more with the visitors.

Trick number 16: If you are going to the cell, make sure that the bolt of the door is turned out. In this case you will be not locked with the prisoner in his cell. You can not imagine how many inmates want to hold staff members as hostages. Every 3rd file of the prisoners has an alert about hostage-taking threats. One day, the prison officer and I were standing in the cell of an inmate called Jeremy. Suddenly, I felt that somebody else was present with us. The crafty prisoner named Russell was behind us with one of his hands on the cell door. Luckily for us as the bolt on the door was turned out and thanks to my intuition to turn back in time, we were not locked inside. A few days later this prisoner assaulted one of the officers on the wing. He is one of the most dangerous cons.

Trick number 17: A lot of prisoners have drug debts. It can be up to £2,000-3,000 or even more.

The criminal world is harsh and one way of signing off the drug debts is to harm the prison officers or members of staff. Every rank has its price.

We had a prisoner from HMP Bedford, who was transferred to us recently. Mark was one of the notorious inmates. He always threatens to stick a pen into the eyes of the prison officers, which is classified as actual bodily harm. He had drug debts up to £2,200 and he agreed to harm the staff to sign it off. As the sum was big, he chose the Senior Officer to assault. Luckily, his weapon made from a plastic fork and razor attached to the end was found during a routine cell search. It saved somebody’s life that day.

Trick number 18: A lot of prisoners try to place ligatures on themselves. A cunning con Samuel was on one to one observation. He placed a ligature on his neck and fell on the floor. The plan was to get the prison officer close to him and assault him. Unfortunately, Jack was one of the officers who was chosen by the con for his scenario. He ran inside of the cell to cut the ligature instead of raising the alarm first to have more help. As soon as the ligature was removed, the prisoner punched

the prison officer 3 times in his face. His nose and jaw were broken and displaced during this brutal attack. Luckily for him, Samuel had no time to kill him as more officers arrived. Their office was just a couple of metres from his cell and they heard the sounds of the fight. A few minutes passed and the assaulter was in handcuffs and moved to the annexe room. The poor prison officer was covered in blood and moved to the General Hospital for surgery. Remember one thing. Prisoners will do any tricks to get you close to them as they can assault you and get your key. Always raise the alarm and ask for help first and do not deal with this dangerous situation on your own.

Trick number 19: The most dangerous trip is escort to the hospital for general appointments.

It was a sunny day in July 2021. The prisoner Richard was sitting in the van with 3 escort prison officers. They were leaving for his hospital appointment in a few minutes. One hour passed and the bad news came very quick. While being in the van, the prisoner took a handmade weapon out of his

back passage and severely assaulted all 3 prison officers in the van. He was escorted back to the prison in handcuffs and with the enhanced police officers team. The prison officers were admitted to the Milton Keynes hospital with severe injuries. This con used his hospital appointment as a way to assault and escape. Some of the most dangerous inmates should not know about the dates of their appointments, it will leave them less preparation time to make their weapons and criminal plans. You will learn more about their tricks while you read this book.

    Millioner's killer

Woodhill high security prison is the place for the most dangerously notorious violent criminals.

The famous cell of British Cannibal Robert Maudsley is still very popular among prisoners. It

was the most secure unit in the UK to keep isolated the serial killer of 4 men, who ate the brain

of another inmate during his sentence. He was transferred to a different prison and only the walls

of his cell reminded of the touch of the Hannibal.

It was my second day of work in the prison. I am standing in front of the 5.2 meters prison walls with the numerous wires under screaming prison alarm and dogs barking. I am ready to step into prison life with the most dangerous criminals in the UK. I will see the first notorious prisoner today.

As soon as you enter the Wing, dozens of eyes are looking at you. You are new and the inmates see it from the distance. It will be the test time for you. They will try to push the boundaries for the first two weeks to find your weakness. I need to be strong and look confident. Even if I have no idea what is expecting me in a minute.

He is walking along the corridor with the prison officer. My first notorious patient from the high security profile. What  do I know about him already? His name was Tommy. They called him  a conman killer. Police described him as a very dangerous man who should not be approached. He was wanted for the murder of a British millionaire in his 2 million pounds house. Mr Bermond was stabbed to death with a long butcher’s knife in his large kitchen in October 2002. They met in the pub and became close friends.

The victim invited his future killer to have a nice dinner at home together. He could not imagine that he was inviting his murderer. Psychopaths are very charming. They can use all their

manipulative skills to find out about your weakness in a minute. You will see them only the first

10 minutes of your life, but you will think, that it is the nicest and brightest person standing in front of you. Mr Bermond falls into the trap of the charming psychopath from their first meeting. Unfortunately, it cost him his life.

The victim was attacked with a machete and had 7 wounds to his head, hands and fractures. The killer attacked him suddenly while the millionaire was cooking a nice dinner for both of them. The kitchen was covered with blood, but nobody heard the last victim’s scream. When the police came into the house, the furniture, jewellery and wallet of the victim were missing. His car had been taken from the driveway and later found crashed and abandoned.

A few hours earlier Tommy successfully removed all the valuable items from the house. Then he came back later with a prostitute to look for pin number to steal bank cards.

They left the house a few days after the murder. A few days later the breathless body of the victim was discovered by Mr Bermond’s father.

The killer was sentenced to 19 years and 1 month in prison for the murder. He was known as a conman killer for the disappearance of all victim’s belongings like a magician of the crime. It was

    his notorious past.

The first review room was busy and I asked the prison officer to go with me to the cell. The first

rule of safety when you are approaching the cell door, make sure the door bolt is turned out. It

will save you from being locked inside with the criminal.

This small safety rule safe me later a few months later, when the robber almost locked me and female prisoner officer behind us in the cell during review of another prisoner. Luckily the door

bolt was out and my intuition told me to turn back in time to notice his attempt and prevent it.

But it happened a few months later.

The cell was opened and Tyrone was standing in front of me now. As soon as he saw a female psychiatrist, he thinks, it’s an easy target for him.

Luckily the second review room was vacant and we went there. Suddenly, the prison officer left

the room and I was left alone with the killer one to one. I learnt from that point that it will always

need to ask the prison officer to stay and let them know about it in advance before the start of the

    review.

The killer talked non stop for 1 hour and it was the difficult hour for me. I wanted to leave, but I can

not stop his speech as it was just flowing.

Then he claimed that he wants to show me his scars on his hand. However, he took top of his clothes off. Now he was standing 1-2
