Chapter 1
The first time John saw Nora was on a Monday morning. She was standing out on her balcony, just standing there, her face turned up to the sun, enjoying the early morning rays on her skin. He didn’t even know her name. John and his wife had just moved into the house next door to her a couple of weeks ago. In the chaos of the moving trucks and boxes of stuff piled up outside waiting to shape their life inside the house, he hadn’t really stopped to pay attention to the actual people in the neighborhood around them.
It was the same suburb in every town in every state in America. White picket fences, manicured lawns, clean streets with children politely playing in the various yards, not too loudly of course. John and Angie hadn’t chosen it for any of those reasons, however. All they’d wanted in their new home was that it was far away from their old home. So, they had forgone the usual traditions of going around greeting their neighbors or inviting them to dinner or drinks in their new home. Instead, they chose to keep to themselves, and in doing so, had inflamed neighborhood curiosity even more.
It was all part of the idyllic suburban lifestyle. When people had nothing real to get worked up over, they found ways to make the mundane interesting, and he and Angie were far from mundane. So far, he’d heard it speculated that he was a banker, a lawyer, and a doctor and that Angie was alternately ten years younger than him, twenty years younger than him, and was his first, second and third
