CHAPTER 1
What in the World Is
Going On?
o Wars and Rumors of Wars
Did you know that since recorded history we have experienced no more than 268 years of global peace? That’s right—that’s approximately 8 percent of our history spent peacefully without having conflicting groups trying to take over each other’s resources. If we restrict ourselves to these facts, we could say without a shadow of a doubt that we humans are truly a violent species.
Has humanity learned anything through the horrors and hardships experienced over millennium of wars? Can we accept the idea that we are currently headed towards a global consensus affirming the futility of war and the sanctity of human life? Will we eventually reach a utopian era where humankind will socially, scientifically, and technologically prosper as a whole, instead of only some fortunate groups? One thing is sure; there is a growing global concern about the well-being of humanity.
Thanks to the dramatic, picturesque magic of Hollywood and the ever-expanding array of communication tools on the internet, the world seems to be growing closer together, at least in this area. There is an outcry coming from the global community desiring peace and prosperity. Our generation may not have experienced war on the same level as our parents and grandparents, yet we know of the devastating effects war can have on nations, without even considering the devastation that a nuclear holocaust could bring.
In fact, the nuclear age has brought us a completely different perspective on war than it did to any previous generation within recorded history. Children who were born after the sixties were raised with the consciousness that an imminent nuclear holocaust could annihilate their country in minutes.
After this nuclear age generation, another generation grew up in a world where terrorism found its significance. Think about it! Back in the eighties, if you had asked a ten-year-old, What is terrorism?
chances are, at worst, the child would have spoken to you about images of war in the Middle East as seen on TV, or at best, he would have described to you the Libyan extremist in Back to the Future 1, who tried to blow up Marty McFly’s DeLorean with a bazooka.
In our day and age, however, if you pick any ten-year-old off the street and ask him or her, What is terrorism?
chances are you will get a more seasoned definition, followed by a few factual examples. The terrorism war is fought on a different level. It is a war that is no longer confined to countries in continual conflict or to specific geographical areas. Atrocities and devastations can happen at any moment, anywhere in the world. It could take place right in your city at any time. Terrorism has no boundaries; it has no respect for ethnic backgrounds, and it does not seek out a particular social class. In other words, peace and security are compromised everywhere in the world.
For those of us who live in developed countries, we are becoming much more aware that the peace we have experienced in the West is slowly becoming something of the past.
Coming back to the nuclear age, it is true we had some relief from the threat of a potential nuclear holocaust. The nuclear superpowers of the world were few but were keen to the idea of denuclearization. We have in mind men like Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, George H.W. Bush, and Boris Yeltsin. But this false sense of peace lasted for little more than a decade. Early in the new millennium came the announcements that rogue states and hot-blooded nations such as North Korea had reached a level of scientific advancement enabling them to build weapons of mass destruction. The world was then pulled right back to square one when faced with nuclear insecurity.
But what made situations even worse was this new possibility that some terrorist group could get their hands on the materials needed to build such dangerous weapons of mass destruction. Imagine those born after 2005 who grew up with the cocktail of fears of a potential terrorist attack or a nuclear homemade bomb. With the burden of a terrorist threat added to the nuclear reality within our world, we now face the imminent possibility of a nuclear disaster without the slightest warning. Let us remember that some countries, or more precisely extremist groups, due to their cultural and moral beliefs, do not have what I would call a Western (or Judeo-Christian) conscience regarding the idea of exterminating an entire population.
o International Landmines
The world as a community feels the tension as we walk on international landmines. Not long ago, Vladimir Putin announced the launch of his new drones and supersonic missiles, while the US president at the time, Donald Trump (the most powerful man on the planet) was known for his habit of not being moderate, especially regarding sensitive issues that could propel us all into a third world war. China’s foreign investment grew fivefold from 2010 to 2016, making it hard to believe that this once poor country had so quickly risen to the status of a world economic, scientific, and military superpower. China, the once sleeping giant, is emerging as a new economic titan and military superpower with an agenda of its own. Indeed, that sleeping giant is silently and steadily playing its cards in strategic relationships, as it is investing tremendous amounts of money in developing countries like Africa.
If you were to set aside the dangers of nuclearization and terrorism, one of the greatest threats to our species is hunger. According to global health organisations, hunger is the world’s number one health risk. Please be aware that there is a difference between hunger and starvation. Starvation is death by absence of sustenance, while hunger is the weakening (or fragility) caused by lack of proper nutrition, which make one susceptible to sickness and disease. According to statistics, more than one billion people are afflicted by hunger. This
