The Wolf Soldier - Ross D. Clay

    Chapter One

    Death On The Trails

THEY DO NOT WALK FAR before the woman’s legs give out. Her husband catches her as she falls and then his legs fail as well. The man twists to break the woman’s fall and lands hard. They roll until they stop, face down on the trail. Their eyes are closed, their faces relaxed, relieved. The man’s hand has come to rest atop his wife’s hand. The early morning sun shines gently upon them as birds sing in the trees. In this peaceful, lovely place, the couple begins their final rest.

A national park pick-up truck pulls into the parking area near the start of the trail.  Three Special Park Police Rangers climb out of the truck. Officer Sherry Morning Bird’s feet hit the dirt first. She adjusts her bulletproof vest and checks her weapon and her radio.   Born and raised amongst the Seneca in up-state New York she is a trained EMT. Cursing in Algonquian, Popogusso masunnehockeo! (Damn fish heads!), she fumbles around in the back of the pick-up; it is always a struggle for her to get her bag out of the bed.

Hopping out of the pick-up to join Officer Sherry, a similarly outfitted Captain Mack Dolan looks down at the shorter woman

and says, Ha, we like to keep you on your toes, Sherry! He

reaches easily into the back of the truck, sliding her bag closer.

But listen, the DEA is crazy this time. Who the hell would be trafficking drugs, in broad daylight on a well used trail, with this kind of visibility? Yeah, it doesn’t make sense or maybe it does.' adds the third Ranger, John Thunder as he approaches his companions. Damn you know, the letter is in plain sight!"

EMT Sherry responds, Ya, at the clinic we’ve seen an increase in hikers brought in deceased and going out to the trail to tend to the hikers dying on the trail, this is not ordinary! Just then, a Boy Scout in a leader in a panic, is running, running down the trail towards the parking lot were the Ranger Police are. He is running as fast as he can and one of  his a boy scouts is right behind him.   They right up to the Ranger Police. Boy Scout Leader shouting, Officers, officers we need you help!  There is an older couple that has collapsed and are unconscious!  Captain Dolan, "What?

Where? The Boy Scout Leader points in the direction and says, Just a few hundred yards up the trail! Sherry hearing this says, Did you give them aide? The Boy Scout Leader says,  Yes! But they were barely breathing! Then JohnThunder speaks up, Did they have gear? The Boy Scout Leader states,  Yes, backpacks and very heavy too! Sherry gets on the radio comms, Dispatch, dispatch, I need a AVAC. The parking lot of the AP Trail! ASAP!  Come in hot and look for yellow smoke for the LZ! Copy?  The Ranger have been here before and move out in double time up the trail. Capt. Dolan stays back and says, Take us right the site of the couple! And you son, wait here for the other personnel that are coming! Then you bring them up to the site! You got that! The Boy Scout acknowledges, Yes sir!"

The Ranger Police and the Boy Scout Leader arrive at the scene. The other Boy Scouts have been trying to revive the couple. They have the couple's feet raised and are wiping the couple’s foreheads with wet cloths. Sherry springs to action and is with the couple. Working on them and now with I.V.'s, checking pulse and trying to stabilize them. She then begins to search in the couples clothing, she finds their ID’s and in the pocket of the woman.

She finds the Pneumatic syringe with a bottle attached, half full of liquid.  Sherry barking, Captain, I've got it, look at this! This is weird! The Captain then takes the syringe and examines it very closely. Then Sherry, hears on her earpiece, and responds,  Copy that, three minutes out!  Follow Yellow smoke! Copy!

John Thunder hears it all on his earpiece, and tosses Smoke Grenades around the site, as they go off, Yellow smoke bellows upward. Capt. Dolan speaks directly, This is serious hardware for some injection! What ever is in this bottle? He then speaks on his comms. Roger, this a crime scene in need of assistance!  Bring everyone! ASAP!  John Thunder now is holding one of the backpacks and he pulls out a tiny bottle the pack is loaded with them!  Captain you need to see this!  Damn, this is got be what we've been looking sir, there has to be over a thousand of them in this pack! John says. Now the team looks up. The Rescue Helicopter A-VAC is now directly overhead of their location. The down drafts from the rotors blows
