Adventures of Mosi and the Teperi Warriors - J Mwangi Njoroge
The Adventures of Mosi and the Teperi Warriors – Part 1
It would take only half an hour to get to the frontier. Then another hour to the chief village of the Lolot nation. The beautiful landscape surrounding them belied the mistrust that existed between the two neighbouring nations. The picturesque hills and valleys seemed out of place, quite like a landscape painting coloured intermittently by skirmishes and hatred.
They were seven of them. All from the Teperi nation. They sat on a lofty hill, camouflaged by the bushes, scouring the horizon beyond the path to Lolot. There was Hausa, the eldest of the group and most experienced in war strategy. Then there was Wolof, a hardy warrior named after the nation who conquered the Sahara and just as warlike. Nija was a lanky fellow who was talked of as the best spearman in Teperi. His brother, Benue, was the inventive type and had created a short spear that had made the Teperi successful in many battles. Limpopo and Winam were tough and experienced warriors who were drafted into the group because of their knowledge of the Lolot terrain.
Mosi was the leader of the group and also the son of the former king of the Teperi.
Plan after plan was hatched and discarded as the group mapped out the strategy they would use. Their mission was to get into the capital of Lolot in disguise and rescue Tana, the renowned physician of the Teperi. He had been captured years ago while on a journey to the frontier to collect rare herbs for his remedies. He had been together with his assistant, Athi, Mosi's younger sister. Although spies from Teperi had brought back good reports of Tana's wellbeing, no one knew about Athi's whereabouts. And there was only one way to find out - without risking her safety if she was still alive - entering Lolot in disguise.
Mosi's morning had started promisingly. He woke up bright and early with the rising sun throwing its rays past the gaps on his window. Opening the window, he could just make out the eastern horizon and an outline of the orange ball that was the sun. Then there was a knock on the door that suddenly shook him from his dream-like trance. Even before he answered the door, his uncle Wanda was already in the room.
This is no time for a soldier to be indoors,
he said. You should have been halfway to Lolot by now.
Sir, there will be no need for much preparations. I intend to take only two warriors with me.
Mosi replied.
This only served to get his uncle more agitated. The previous night, Mosi and his uncle had argued about the size of the group to take to Lolot.
