    CHAPTER ONE

    A Witch in Waiting

    She sits so still by the fire. You would almost think she is a statue, a little doll in a beautiful English cottage.

    But no – she moves, her legs swinging back and forth rhythmically. The rest of her is completely still. A tall, pointy witch’s hat atop her red curls. Arms and legs encased in stripy woolly material beneath a short black pinafore dress.

    ‘Be in the stillness,’ they said, she muttered inside her head. This is so hard to do.

    ‘Allow it to emerge,’ they said.

    For goodness sake, how can that happen?

    Her small face contorted in concentration. This seemed so difficult.

    The others knew how to do it. Well, not all. There were lots of other little girls who didn’t even know about this stuff. They didn’t even know it existed.

    Life must be simpler for them, she thought.

    The small black dog at her feet stirred.

    What’s to be done, Luna? she asked her. Luna just looked at her with her beautiful doleful eyes.

    I am thinking, I am concentrating, I am ignoring all those who doubt but nothing is happening.

    Witch

    Absolutely nothing!
