CHAPTER ONE

Lieutenant Ione Anders of the Spokane Police Department stared at the blade sticking from the rear tire on her new issue Tahoe.

It was a hunting knife, with a black leather grip and a short cross guard at the base of the hilt. A steel butt.

Buried in the rubber to halfway along the blade.

The tire was flat, the rim crushing it to the tarmac at the curb.

The day was bright and cool. One of those fall mornings that are enlivening and refreshing. The street was in Willow Heights, one of the mid to low end suburbs. The plain clapboard houses were separated by wire fences, with the occasional white picket.
