    INTRODUCTION

A crystal is a material whose constituents (such as atoms, molecules, or ions) are arranged in a microscopic structure that is high in its order, forming a crystal lattice that extends in all paths. It is also called a crystalline solid. Besides this, single macroscopic crystals are usually identifiable by their geometric shape, consisting of flat faces with specific orientations of character. The scientific study of crystals and the formation of crystals is called crystallography. The crystal formation process via crystal growth mechanisms is called the crystallization or solidification process.

The word crystal is from the ancient Greek word (krustallos), meaning ice as well as rock crystal, icy cold, frost. Popular crystal samples include diamonds, snowflakes, and table salt. Most crystals are inorganic solids, but polycrystals are several microscopic crystals fused into one solid together. Many of these like ceramics, minerals, and ice are good examples of polycrystals. The third category of solids is amorphous solids, where the atoms have no periodic structure. Amorphous solids such as wax, glass, and many plastics are examples.

Notwithstanding the term, lead crystal, crystal glass, and related products are not crystals but rather glass forms, i.e., amorphous solids. Crystals are often used in pseudoscientific practices such as crystal therapy, and in Wiccan beliefs and related religious movements, along with gemstones, and are sometimes associated with spell work.

The scientific definition of a crystal is based on the microscopic arrangement of the atoms within it, called the structure of crystals. A crystal is stable, in which the atoms form a regular agreement. Not all the crystals are solids. For example, when liquid water begins to freeze, the change in phase begins with small ice crystals forming until they fuse, forming a polycrystalline structure. Each of the tiny crystals (called crystallites or grains) in the final form of ice is a pure gem with a periodic arrangement of atoms. The entire polycrystal does not have a natural method since the regular pattern at the grain boundaries is broken. Many inorganic macroscopic solids are polycrystalline, like almost all the metals, ice, ceramics, rocks, etc. Solids that are neither crystalline nor polycrystalline, such as glass, are referred to as amorphous solids.

These may not have a periodic, even microscopic order. There are significant distinctions between crystalline solids and amorphous solids: the process of forming a glass most noticeably does not release the latent heat of fusion but instead constitutes a crystal. A crystal structure is (an arrangement of atoms in a crystal) distinguished by its unit cell, a small imaginary box in a specific spatial arrangement that contains one or more atoms. To get the gem, the unit cells are stack in tri-dimensional space.

The requirement limit in a crystal's symmetry is that the unit cells stack perfectly, without any gaps. There are 219 possible symmetries of crystals, called crystallographic groupings of space. Crystal systems have seven groups, the cubic crystal system where crystals can form rectangular boxes or cubes, such as Halite (mineral) or the hexagonal crystal system (where crystals can form hexagons, such as ordinary water ice).

There are several ways to use crystals to help heal, enrich, and sustain you through the journey of life. Our in-depth articles explore several of such ways to tap into these energies and how to preserve and care for more sensitive crystals in your collected works. You will learn how you can use the crystal energies to support your physical bodies and understand how these stones have a close link to your chakras and higher self in general.

We will discuss not only how each type of crystal is unique, but also how every single piece of the same kind of crystal is distinctive in itself. You can learn how to tap into these healing energies and calming powers, and how to use crystals to activate your latent energies and spiritual prowess. Through us, you'll also discover how specific colors evoke certain emotions and meanings. Purple crystals tend to be highly psychic and spiritual. Red stones often have to do with our passions, our circulation, hearts, and health, and blue rocks often promote clarity of mind, clear communication, etc.

Each stone has its energies and strengths, but don't feel overwhelmed just yet. You will find your intuition to be a helpful guide, and of course, you will feel excited and curious about some of the stones that we are discussing that you know will work best for you.

    CHAPTER ONE

    Crystal Faces and Shapes

Crystals are widely recognized by their shape, which consists of flat, sharp, angled faces. For a gem, these shape features are not necessary — a crystal is scientifically defined by its atomic microstructural arrangement, not its macroscopic shape — but the characteristic macroscopic shape is often present and easy to see.

Euhedral crystals are those with visible flat faces that are well-shaped. Anhedral crystals are not, typically, because the gem in a polycrystalline solid is one grain.

A euhedral crystal's flat faces (also called facets) are in a particular way relative to the crystal's underlying atomic arrangement: planes with relatively low Miller index. It happens because some surface orientations are more stable than others (less energy from the surface). As a crystal grows, new atoms easily attach themselves to the surface's rougher and less durable parts but less easily to the flat, secure surfaces. Therefore, the flat surfaces tend to grow bigger and smoother until these plane surfaces consist of the entire crystal surface. One of the oldest techniques in crystallography research is to calculate the three-dimensional orientations of a crystal's faces and use them to infer the underlying symmetry of crystals. The habit of a crystal is its outer visible form. It is the crystal structure (which limits potential facet orientations), the particular crystal chemistry and bonding (which may benefit certain facets over others), and the situations under which the crystal is created.

    Occurrence in Nature

    Rocks

The highest concentrations of crystals on Earth are part of its solid bedrock by volume and weight. Typically, crystals found in rocks range in size from a fraction of a millimetre to several centimetres across, although huge crystals sometimes found. A gem of beryl from Madagascar, Malakialina, 18 m (59 ft) long and 3.5 m (11 ft) in diameter, weighing 380,000 kg (840,000 lb), was the
