Chapter One

July 1938

While the Battle of the Ebro raged, Heini Hopkins, Lise Lazard and Dr Miguel Martinez tended to their patients in a makeshift hospital near the village of La Bisbal de Falset.

The Loyalists’ medical staff had established the hospital on the east side of the River Ebro, in a huge cave carved into the mountainside.

The cave was dark, low, and jagged. One hundred and twenty metal beds jutted at irregular angles, positioned on areas of flat ground, away from the deep potholes. An ambulance supplied the energy to light the operating theatre. However, on the ward, Heini and Lise had to make do with wicks placed in tiny oil lamps.

For four days and nights, Heini and Lise worked, napping whenever there was a lull in the fighting. The wounded, transported across the river, arrived day and night. This was no skirmish, Heini realised, this was a major battle, possibly the decisive battle of the war.

Heini supervised the blood transfusions, the saline and adrenaline drips, then she mopped her brow and joined Lise at the mouth of the cave.

Lise had made her way into the daylight so that she could check her charts. Lise’s charts gave details of the number of casualties and their wounds – head wounds, leg wounds, amputations, etcetera. Lise’s charts also listed the weapons that inflicted those wounds – mortars, shells and bullets. Furthermore, Lise used a colour code to identify items most needed; they ranged from bandages, to medications, to steel helmets.

Heini sat on a large boulder and blew her fringe away from her forehead. I’m knackered, she said.

Knackered? Lise frowned.

Yes, Heini said. I’m knackered.

What does that mean? Lise asked.

It means tired, Heini said. Exhausted. I think the word comes from the world of horses and the knacker’s yard.

Despite her tiredness, Lise laughed. English is such a weird language.

I agree, Heini sighed.

Lise was signing her charts when Dr Martinez arrived. After four hard days and nights, the strain revealed itself in his weary posture and the dark circles around his eyes.
