About this ebook

“Tracy seems to have found her literary sweet spot.” —Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review

New York Times
bestseller P. J. Tracy returns with Deep into the Dark, a brand new series set in LA and featuring up-and-coming LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan and murder suspect Sam Easton.

Sam Eastona true survivoris home from Afghanistan, trying to rebuild a life in his hometown of LA. Separated from his wife, bartending and therapy sessions are what occupy his days and nights. When friend and colleague Melody Traeger is beaten by her boyfriend, she turns to Sam for help. When the boyfriend turns up dead the next day, a hard case like Sam is the perfect suspect.

But LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan, whose brother recently died serving overseas, is sympathetic to Sam's troubles, and can't quite see him as a killer. She's more interested in the secrets Melody might be keeping and the developments in another murder case on the other side of town.

Set in an LA where real people live and work--not the superficial LA of Beverly Hills or the gritty underbelly of the city--Deep into the Dark features two really engaging, dynamic main characters and explores the nature of obsession, revenge, and grief.

P. J. Tracy is known for her "fast, fresh, and funny" characters (Harlan Coben) and her "sizzling" plots (People); the Monkeewrench series was her first, set in Minneapolis and co-written with her mother. Now with Deep into the Dark she's on her ownand it's a home run.

2022 book #42. 2021. Maggie Nolan is an LA homicide detective. Sam Easton is an Afghan vet with PSTD issues and disfigured face from war. He becomes the chief suspect in a case Nolan is investigating. Decent enough murder mystery.

    Wow outstanding book.
    Great believable characters
    Excellent mystery.
I look forward to reading the other 2 books in the series although the police detective wasn’t as interesting as Sam and Melody were.

Sam Easton is soldier returned from Afghanistan with a scarred face and severe PTSD. He has horrible dreams and often cannot tell the difference between reality and his dreams. He constantly fears that he is going over the deep end for good.Melody Traeger is former rock start with demons of her own. She is a former addict and has left her music career and criminal past behind. Both Sam and Melody work at the same bar; she is the bartender and he works in the back. They are friends and really only have each other especially since Sam’s wife, Yuki, has left him. Things go off the rail when Melody’s boyfriend is murdered followed by Sam’s estranged wife. This is taking place while the LA police are trying to capture a serial killer. Sam and Melody become suspects. There was really nothing special about this book. There were a fair amount of clues and I suspected fairly early on who the murderer was. The twist at the end was a bit far fetched and seemed “tacked on” the end to me. This plot point could have used a more gradual development with clues planted throughout the book. Sam and Melody were interesting characters and the plot moved at a good pace.

Starting a new series after having huge success with a former series and the Monkeywrench crew, is sure to be challenging. This new series highlights the seedy underbelly of LA and features two new characters. Sam Easton is a military veteran suffering from severe PTSD and Detective Maggie Nolan had a brother who died in service to his country. They are brought together after a series of murders and the militaryy connection helps forms a bond between the pair. I found these characters interesting, the plot fast paced but I have not quite yet connected totally with the pair. Though I found, at least so far, Sam more intriguing than Dolan. I do intend to read the next entry in this series because I am curious to where and how Tracy will develop these characters. For now, I'll just say, I thought this was good and reserve further judgement.ARC from Netgalley.

Sam Easton, who is an ex-army, is ready to start his life anew. However, he is often haunted by the ghosts of his past, and is drawn even deeper into the dark when there are two murders happened back to back, including his soon-to-be ex-wife!P.J. Tracy is undisputedly adept at spinning tantalizing twists and turns into this riveting DEEP INTO THE DARK!Thank you, NetGalley and Minotaur Books for this delightful thriller.#NetGalley#DeepIntoTheDark

Deep Into the Dark was an engaging mystery with well-developed characters. It introduces Detective Margaret Nolan who is a homicide detective. It also stars Sam Easton who is a former soldier who was badly injured in Afghanistan and who is now trying to rebuild his life with a badly scarred body, PTSD, and gaping holes in his memory. Sam has recently separated from his wife Yukiko who could no longer deal with Sam's issues. Sam works as a bar back at a club in LA and divides his time between work and visits with his psychiatrist. When a fellow employee begs for shelter after being hit by her abusive boyfriend, Sam takes her in. And, when the abusive boyfriend is murdered, the two soon become suspects in the case.Suspicion grows even more when Sam's wife is found murdered after Sam had dropped by to check on her because of a bad dream and found out that she was cheating on him. Sam left without confronting her but this new information only added to the stress and hallucinations that he was already suffering. He is getting very tired of being visited by his fallen comrades in his very frequent nightmares.Nolan, who recently lost a brother while he was serving overseas, wants to give Sam the benefit of a doubt but her partner really likes him for both murders. As they investigate these murders, they are also peripheral to another series of murders which feature a number of women and which took place near the club where Sam works. The story was entertaining and was also a complex mystery. I liked all the characters but had a special fondness for Sam who is fighting so hard to get over all the problems he brought home with him from Afghanistan. I recommend the story to mystery lovers.

Sam Easton has bad dreams, very bad dreams. Small wonder after what he has seen and done. Melody Traeger, a friend and semi-survivor has her own issues and problems which quickly become Easton’s. And both of their problems are about to be the ballast that either shoots LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan to the top of her game or sends her spiraling down into the whirlpool of lost causes and cases. After the successful Monkeewrench series this was a little simplistic and disappointing. I missed the quirky characters and dialog but appreciated that Tracy took the time to create a new cast of unusual, offbeat personalities with mega issues that psychotropics can’t touch. It was a fast read but not up to the heart racing high of the Monkeewrench gang’s capers. Thank you NetGalley and Minotaur Books for a copy

law-enforcement, veterans, abuse, PTSD, murder-investigation, crime-fiction, thriller, murder****This author is new to me but it's been a real thrill ride. Sam and Melody are damaged souls with histories that are guaranteed to give one PTSD but are paired and then entangled in a dark spiral of homicides with too many homicide detectives and ancillary characters to keep track of. Sometimes the complexity gets confusing, but it is worth the effort if it doesn't trigger the reader.I requested and received a free ebook copy from St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books via NetGalley.

This was a really suspenseful and fast paced thriller from PJ Tracy. I loved the Monkeewrench series and hope this is the start of a new series. There were a few loose ends that I would have liked wrapped up but other than that I liked the ending. The characters were all strong and if it is a series, there is definitely a lot to be learned about Nolan and Remy. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. This is not part of the Monkeewrench series and is set in Los Angeles. There are a fair number of characters: Melody, a former singer, now bartender; her abusive boyfriend Ryan; Sam, a veteran with PTSD who is estranged from his wife Yuki; Rolf, who wants Sam and Melody to appear in his film; police detectives Nolan and Crawford, tasked with investigating Ryan's murder; and finally police detective Remy, who is seeking a serial killer, the Monster in Miracle Mile.I enjoyed this, and I liked Sam and Melody. The plot as it concerned them was well done, but the other strand featuring Remy and the Monster felt a bit tacked on - the book would have been better without it really. I believe this will be the first in a series, so perhaps that is why Remy had to be included, but his part of the story was dull, unbelievable, and slightly unresolved all at the same time.
