Chapter 1: The Impact of Food Waste

In late 2019, UN Secretary-General António Guterres raised alarm bells by stating that there is now a point of no return on climate change. He says it is in sight and hurtling toward us. Thirteen other respondents to the Forum’s Global Risks Perception Survey also sounded similar alarm bells. For the first time in the history of the survey, environmental concerns dominated the top long-term risks. The Forum’s multi-stakeholder network rates biodiversity loss as the second most impactful and third most likely risk over the next decade (Global Risk Report, World Economic Forum, 2020).

In today’s world, food waste is causing so many problems. It is causing climate change, our world is getting warmer with each passing day, and plastic waste can take up to 450 years to decompose in landfill. Have you ever wondered why this is happening, and where all your waste ends up? And what could be the solution? If we diagnose this issue deeply, we will begin to see how our actions are damaging the environment in which we live. It is high time we started looking into our own behaviours and how they are impacting our surroundings.

Juliana and Farheen, two responsible global citizens, created the Sustainable Intelligence Group (SIG) which seeks to prevent food waste in household kitchens through monthly Sustainability Sunday talks and the Foodprint Training Program, along with this book.

SIG was established in late 2020 to create a tribe of lifelong learners with sound food waste management skills and build powerful sustainable practices around the globe.
