In Brazil, raising beef cattle represents one of the main economic activities. The country has the largest herd in the world and the activity is profitable and a considerable source of income. Additionally, beef produced in Brazil is highly appreciated both domestically and abroad. However, to be successful in raising beef cattle, it is necessary to use appropriate techniques to obtain quality products in less time and provide profitability to the rancher. This care ranges from the structure of the property, choice of breed of the animal, handling of the animals, feeding and administration of the property. In this document we will discuss the appropriate techniques to be successful in raising beef cattle.
Beef cattle production system is the set of technologies and management practices, as well as the type of animal, the purpose of creation, the breed or genetic group and the place where the activity is carried out. In addition, the social, economic, and cultural aspects of the rancher are also included. The existence of several Brazilian systems of beef cattle production systems can be seen. Thus, we have from bovine production for subsistence to production systems with a high level of technology and zootechnical gains.
The production of beef cattle is characterized by the breeding, growing and fattening phases, which can all be carried out on the same property or on separate properties.
Create
covers the period of coverage of females until weaning and is formed by females in the reproduction phase, of bulls and females in rearing for replacement. In this type of breeding, males are sold immediately after weaning (six to nine months of age), as are weaned calves, heifers, cows, and bulls. Weaned heifers and young heifers (one to two years old) are sold for both breeding and fattening, while discarded heifers, two to three years old, cows and bulls are normally sent to slaughterhouses for slaughter. Some young females can be marketed for artificial insemination.
Create and Recreate
In this activity, males are raised up to 15 to 18 months of age. After this period, the animals, now called withers, are sold.
Create, Recreate and Fatten
In this type of creation, the rancher fattens the animals until the stage of slaughter, with the period varying from 15 to 42 months.
Recreate and Fatten
It starts with the weaned calf or with the withers and goes until the slaughter phase. It is usually done with male animals, but the rancher can also fatten females normally from 1 year of age.
Fattening (finishing)
In the past, it was an activity developed by ranchers who
