The longest family trip lasted 150 years.

    CHAPTER 1

Russel’s vision returned slowly. The cold air caused goosebumps to form all over his body. The intensity of the lighting felt like hot pokers in his pupils. The top door to his hibernation chamber opened, causing a pressure change that made his ears pop.

Russel laid on the body-forming padding until his eyes adjusted to the ship’s light level. I really hate this part.

He hoisted his body to a sitting position. The only thing that took his mind off of his stiff muscles was the intense hunger within him. He looked across the aisle and saw Tasha, his wife, attempting to sit up and get the saliva going in her mouth. She stared at Russel, then spoke. What year is it?

Russel looked around the compartment. His memory wasn’t all there yet. He saw the flat panel display at the end of the compartment. Twenty three seventy.

She stared at him for a few minutes. Russel was about to ask what was on her mind when she finally said something. When did we leave?

Russel plunked back onto the mattress and looked up at the overhead. He laughed. You know, I can’t remember. His mind seemed slow. Like syrup from the refrigerator. Twenty two twenty. I think.

Tasha closed her eyes. One hundred and fifty years. She craned her neck to see the display, but it was mounted on her side of the compartment, facing Russel. Can you see how far we’ve traveled?
