The Obscure Life of Jonah Falconeri

About this ebook
Jonah Falconeri, is a working-class young man; he is a stonemason who dreams of becoming a scholar. The other main character is his cousin, Sue Bridehead, who is also his central love interest. The novel is concerned in particular with issues of class, education, religion, morality and marriage.
The novel tells the story of Jonah Falconeri who lives in a village in southern England. He yearns to be a scholar at "Christminster", a city modeled on Oxford. As a youth, Jude teaches himself Classical Greek and Latin in his spare time, while working first in his great-aunt's bakery, with the hope of entering university. But before he can try to do this the naive Jude is seduced by Mirabella Caputo, a rather coarse, morally lax, and superficial local girl who traps him into marriage by pretending to be pregnant. The marriage is a failure, and Mirabella leaves Jonah and later emigrates to Australia, where she enters into a bigamous marriage. By this time, Jonah has abandoned his classical studies.
The events occur over a 19-year period, from age 11 at the beginning of the novel, to the time of his death Jonah seems much older than his thirty years – for he has experienced so much disappointment and grief in his life. It would seem that his burdens exceeded his ability to survive, much less to triumph.

I'm a 61 year old widower of 6 years who is retired and lives in Des Plaines IL. I'm pretty much a stay at home person (especially during these Covid times). I live with my 2 loyal companions, my 12 year old silky terrier Scottie and my 11 year old American longhair black cat Edy. My passions are reading and cooking. I love writing and this is my second book with a third in the works. My first published book is called The Fermi Paradox which I wrote 15 years ago. I have a website (https://kensbookinfo.blogspot.com/) that deals primarily in literature, as well as news and info. I also buy and sell textbooks which I like to call textbook arbitrage.I love books because they provide an escape. They allow me to go somewhere I would never be able to get without them. I read to know that I am not alone. Books provide me with a place to go when I have nowhere else to go.When you read and see the world through another person's eyes, it is quite breathtaking and overwhelming. Everyone envisages things and perceives things differently and to glimpse another person's perspective, is fascinating (especially if it is a biography or a real true-life story)
