    ◆ Epilogue. What is Voluntourism?

    20 years have already passed

since I started to travel the world as a volunteer.

    It wasn’t always easy.

    Sometimes tears were shed.

But there were people that I met along the way.

People I would have never met

if it wasn’t for the voluntary works.

    Living and working together

Togetherness makes voluntary work all the more joyous and merry.

I wish all the happiness to the friends that Kim crossed paths with in this journey.

How much longer will it take until I can set foot on land again?

The plane was about to land on Stanfield Airport in Halifax. Kim’s destination is Nova Scotia, Halifax, located on the Eastern Canada. Looking at the Canadian map, you can almost immediately spot familiar cities like Vancouver on the Pacific Ocean, then as you shift your gaze towards the east, Toronto comes into view. If you would look just a little further, you will, finally, be able to see where Halifax is located on the Atlantic Ocean. Kim didn’t realize how big Canada is, all he wanted was to travel to the end of the earth.

What would you like to have sir?

A lovely stewardess kindly spoke in Korean to Kim as the plane flew through Vancouver, on its way to Toronto. But after flying by Quebec, the Canadian stewardesses started to speak in English, at which point Kim decided that he was at present and will no longer be hungry for the remaining duration of his flight. Kim’s life of deprivation could be traced back precisely to this very moment. Just like that, Kim’s cost-effective, but strenuous life in Canada had begun.

Kim finally arrived at the Halifax airport, but his luggage was nowhere to be found.

So he enquired about it to someone who looked like an employee at the airport.

    ‘My bag is..’

Kim’s English pronunciation must have been understandably rudimentary.

And the employee quite literally did not understand a word.

    What Kim could not comprehend was;

How could he not understand at least the word luggage?

Kim must have tried to pronounce the word ‘luggage’ in every possible way.

Incorporating body language and the dictionary was not of much help,

Kim had no choice but to wait silently and patiently.

The luggage never arrived, and that’s how Kim spent his first night in Canada, at the airport.

In the morning, Kim found the employee from yesterday.

    In amazement Kim wondered (Hallelujah)

Did he have an overnight epiphany in English proficiency and he was now able to convey his situation eloquently? Or perhaps more likely the observant employee realized that Kim spent the night in front of the conveyor belt, in any case, this time the kind Canadian employee quickly caught on to Kim’s predicament.

The employee took Kim to his office and wasted no time in trying to find out what had happened to the luggage. After a while he started to explain great many things to Kim, of which Kim could understand only couple of important points.

Your luggage not here, it is in Vancouver

Kim’s luggage somehow made their way to Vancouver, and the employee suggested that he should check in to an accommodation in downtown and asked Kim to write down the address of said accommodation.

However, Kim’s accommodation was yet to be determined, in a hindsight Kim must have been very brave, and also quite naive to have traveled overseas without knowing the very basic of reserving accommodations before boarding a plane.

So another night was spent at the airport and things worked out without having to speak a word of English the following day.

In the morning, Kim was able to retrieve his luggage, and finally made his way out of the airport around 10 am. As he stepped out, Kim was reminded of two days ago, when he first arrived, and a faint smile could be seen on his face.

There won’t be any public transport operating because it’s evening flight, what should I do?

Kim wanted to go to the end of the world.

    And Kim has finally arrived.

Kim arrived at the youth hostel around noon.

Having experienced quite a traumatic ordeal involving miscommunication at the airport, Kim was, with good reason, hesitant to make his way in to ask for a room.

Alas, Kim had nowhere else to go.

    Reminding himself of simple yet profound words said to his overwhelmed workers by now passed founder of Hyundai Motor, Chung Ju-young as he embarked on Korea’s first ever highway construction with a shovel on his hands;

    ‘Let’s just dig first.’

Kim also decided to just walk in first.

    Do you have a room?

It was clear that the clerk did not understand at first, but after couple of tries, Kim was able to receive a polite answer.

    No room, bye bye.

Where will Kim spend the night then…

As Kim walked out of the hostel, he felt useless. Why did it have to be so hard for him? Nothing came easily. He didn’t even have the energy to take out the travel brochure for guidance. Everything that happened since his arrival had broken Kim’s resolve.

Suddenly, a slick young man greeted Kim and there hadn’t been a sound sweeter than this because he spoke in Korean.

    Are you Korean?

Every cloud has a silver lining they said; Kim had no doubt that this man was about to offer his saving grace. While Kim was trying to process an overflow of gratitude in his mind the young man continued to speak.

‘It’s the peak season now, if you haven’t already made any reservations, it will be difficult to find an accommodation now. Why don’t we go around and see if we can find a room for you?"

Kim did as the young man offered. After visiting few
