"Our apartment isn’t that big, you know," Brooke teased as she allowed herself to be led by the hand, eyes dutifully kept closed.

Hush, babe, she heard Mercy reply in front of her. You said you trusted me enough to let me surprise you. Brooke had always loved her girlfriend’s voice, soft and dark with a hint of gravel. It reminded her of a lounge singer, or maybe more specifically of Jessica Rabbit, her source of many confused feelings as a young girl with a copy of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? on bootleg VHS.

Oh I trust you plenty. I just don’t know why you’re leading me in circles when we’ve barely got 500 square feet to move in. While she had gotten acclimated enough to her fangs that she wasn’t having problems speaking anymore, Brooke was still painfully conscious of the feeling of them against her tongue and lips as she formed each syllable. They were a constant reminder of the changes the last few weeks had held, the sudden upheaval to her life—their lives—that had made all their other crises seem miniscule by comparison.

"Maybe I’m taking you into a secret passage that you never knew about and it leads to an elaborate sex dungeon I’ve set up. The sound of her girlfriend’s voice let Brooke know that Mercy was rolling her eyes. Play along and let me do this for you."

Yes, ma’am. Their little repartee made Brooke feel more centred. The two of them had a comfortable conversational rhythm, a verbal tug-of-war that suited their quick wits and sharp tongues. It was as familiar as the layout of the apartment they’d shared for three years, as the lightly incensed smell of their bedroom, as the click of the door shutting behind her.

Soft hands on her shoulders, fingers trailing along the side of her neck. Breath against her ear. Brooke shivered, her heart skipping a beat. (It was still beating, she reminded herself. Slower, more faint, but it was there. Unlearning the mythical stereotypes was taking time.)

Mercy’s voice in her ear, dark, sensuous. A little intimidating. You remember your safeword?

Eyes still closed, the woman grinned. For a moment, she felt her lips part to show her teeth; she self-consciously stunted the smile to a closed-lip smirk instead. I don’t know, it’s been awhile since you’ve topped, I may have forgotten.

She heard a dramatic gasp, followed by the mild sting of a slap on the arm. "You brat! Mercy laughed. Fine, your backup safeword is ‘asparagus,’ then, until you remember your usual one." Brooke went to make a show of disgust with her face but was caught off guard by a shove at the small of her back that sent her stumbling forward. Her knees hit the edge of the bed and she wobbled, managing to stay standing with only a little flailing of
