About this ebook
A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life.
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.
In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants.
Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Captivating read. I finished it in a couple of days. As I approached the end of the book, I couldn't imagine how she was going to close it in a couple of short chapters. She tied it all together emotionally beautiful. Unfinished closure, which is a theme most of us can relate to.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I'm sad Jeannette had to go through everything she experienced in her childhood & young adult life, but I'm glad she finally got the help she deserves and that she's healing and able to share her story with others. I also hope she continues writing cause she's a natural born storyteller and it's one of the things she loves to do and wasn't forced into. Highly recommend the audiobook, which she narrates herself.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It's one of the best books I've read. My husband also read this book, and we both love it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Emotional, raw writing. Definitely worth the read, a 10/10 for me!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I’m not famous but this could have been about my mother and I. I haven’t quite known where to put the feelings I feel, the guilt I feel for feeling them. I found one of many homes in this book. Thanks to this brave voice for speaking so succinctly and bluntly the things society does not make one comfortable to say in a casual setting, loved this more than my mere mortal little review can convey in this space.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Love this great book!!! Hit home really hard so couldn't read again but will be a top 10 for my 2024 reads.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Poignant and raw. A cathartic tale of a young woman overcoming a lifetime of trauma and abuse. A story of hope and healing.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Raw and brutally honest, sometimes painful… a beautiful read. Hurt and healing.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5ABSOLUTELY STELLAR…i know i’m late to the party but this book is amazing
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A very interesting and memorable memoir. It is broken up into small memories which makes it incredibly easy to pick up and put down at any point. However, I didn’t want to put it down.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is helping so many people heal from their past, myself included.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I absolutely loved this book! It's wonderful to hear Jeanette (sorry I know I spelled it wrong since her spelling is unique) but hearing her words as she's talking about coming into her own, her "struggles" not realizing she was struggling but seeing the growth and her realization of how her childhood (or lack there of) was not a normal one and the abuse she didn't even realize she had been put through I think she's amazing I never watched her on nickelodeon my son watched iCarly briefly but I never got to know anything about her until this book. It's beautifully written, beautifully read, and it's a wonderful to watch her grow and hear that she's still trying to find her own way but knowing it's now HER way she's finding! She's doing it for herself and not trying to make anyone else happy!!! Great read!!!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5An incredibly intricate exploration of mother-daughter relationships, mental health issues and food issues experienced by all woman, incremented by fame, and public exposure. Painfully honest.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The book is beautiful, is hard and crue to watch her journey, I got so engaged on knowing her better and hoping she would realize and look for help, I feel deeply touched and I think is very important not romanticizing relationships like mom and dauther, every relationship can be toxic, your mom is not a godness creature, I would strongly recommend this book, Congratulations Jennette for your journey and for sharing with us is this beautiful writing.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I liked her humor and writing style that kept me very engaged and wanting to know more, good job!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Disguised trauma causing disorders, and healing. So raw. I love.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It's a book that let us know that nothing is constant
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It was my first time getting back into reading and decided to use this as a start. I’m glad I did and stuck with it! Even though I didn’t go through the experiences she went through, I can feel the pain and anguish through her words. Great book honestly!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I am kinda scared. You see her and dont ever accure to you what she had been through. Its not only her. Every person you know. Be kind cause you never know. The book was an amazing choice. Highly recommended. Her writing, her passion in the book. amazing!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing book, really gets into it
Jennette is such a strong woman - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I read this book in just two day. The length McCurdy's mother went to control her is shocking.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The tile is harsh in your face and really out there. It shows however how far Jennette has come in her healing, coz the girl we read about would not have had the courage to say such a thing before her mom died. Its up there with Educated, crazy the things people do to their children. Another memoir that will stay with me for years to come
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Had no idea that any of this was going on in her life. It was a great read!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Shhiiihhhaaaabbbbbbbbb WHAAAATTTT THE FFUUUCKKKKK it is so good. And also heartbreaking. Give it a fucking read. :) I am so amazed by you, Jeannette. I send love and peace and also happinessMcCarty does a fantastic job illustrating the moments of her life. Layering her experiences, while nicely sidestepping the present perspective of a decades old event. Her adult perspective is nowhere to be found when we meet her at six. The pace & rhythm keep the reader engaged.I finally got the chance to read/listen to this book and I am so glad I finally did. This book definitely made me open my eyes to abuse I endured from a narcissistic parent.

The ending was abrupt & unexpected. Some tensions were brought to conclusion, while certain questions are still nagging me. Without giving anything away, I just really want to know if there was a second date. How did that turn out? Is there hope?
Whatever is happening in your life currently, I hope you are blessed with an abundance of happiness, contentment & satisfaction. I love what you've shared and how it was written. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely stellar memoir with an emotional depth that's missing in non-fiction!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book from the wonder Janette Mcurdy. Has some topics some people can find triggering.
https://gloriousmythic.com/ - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Honest, True, and over all Powerful. An inspiration if there ever was one. All my love and all five stars, deservedly so.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow. I read this book in one sitting. I haven’t read a book fully in ages and usually only read non fiction true crime. I’ve never seen any of the Nickelodeon shows Jeanette was in either. I went in to this book fully blind on other peoples good words and can agree — this book is fantastic. The writing style is gripping — every time you want to put the book down to do something, you’re caught on the edge of your seat wondering what happens next in her story. It was a unique insight in to the entertain industry and her life. Truly you never know what is happening in someone’s life. Thank you Jeanette for making me realise I need help with my issues and can’t face these demons alone anymore.
