Acknowledgment
This book would not be without the help of a community of people who also share a joy of history. I have to thank Chris Nichol, who encouraged me to start putting down the information I so passionately researched. The Special Collections Department of the Pikes Peak Library District which houses so many wonderful resources. Abby Mall, with Evergreen Cemetery, who found old documents that allowed me to find the resting places of these amazing women.
I also want to thank my friends who continued to encourage me to follow through, and continue to tell the stories of these women, Dianne Hartshorn, Liz Duckworth, Patricia Willis Kemp, and so many others. Thank you all.
Author’s Notes
In researching the story of these amazing women every effort has been made to verify their information. As new information becomes available, some facts may vary.
In telling the story of both Julia E. Loomis and Harriett Leonard, both have family stories that place them in Colorado Springs by 1876. While it is important to honor their family histories, documents verify their presence in the Pikes Peak Region in 1878.
Regardless, telling the story of these women is something that is important to the history of this region. Look at this as a start, rather than the definitive information.
