About this ebook
Who is the woman renting that isolated cottage on the old coast road?
I was the first to meet her - her name is Molly. I own the village shop and I like to know what goes on around here. So naturally, I want to know more about her and why she came to Scotland. Molly and her bloodhound puppy take long walks as they explore the area. She was very curious about a neglected stone house at the edge of the woods. That belongs to Old Joe, I told her, our local recluse.
Another young woman has arrived and moved in with Old Joe. Who is she? Why is she here? And why does our notoriously unsociable Joe let her stay? No-one has seen Joe around since she arrived. I feel something is wrong.
I spend my days tending the shop so I can't get about much. But Molly can, and she is as curious as I am. I wonder if she can help me get to the bottom of this?

THE BELL OVER MY SHOP door tinkled, and I put down my knitting. The shop was empty but for the woman who paused in the doorway.
Can I help you?
I asked.
Just browsing, thanks.
She had an American accent, I thought. I watched her wander around the shop. She was fairly tall, with reddish-brown hair, and dressed casually in jeans and a green jacket.
She moved along the shelves, picking up anything that caught her eye, then putting it back again. She came back to the rack of paperback books I keep near the front of the shop, and browsed through them while other customers came in and kept me busy.
She turned the revolving rack and looked through the guidebooks and maps on the other side. She selected a guide to the local area and brought it to the counter. I noticed that her eyes were green, quite unusual.
I rang up the price in the till. That'll be two pounds, please.
As she passed me the money, I asked, Where are you from then, lass?
Canada.
I've a cousin in Canada, in Toronto.
The woman smiled. That's where I live.
I visited Alistair a few years back. Toronto's a big place. Are ye on holiday?
Yes, I've rented the cottage on the coast road... Spindrift. Do you know it?
Aye, I know the place. Will ye bide there alone?
She nodded, looking slightly puzzled, and left the shop.
Conversation among the other customers started as
