About this ebook
The GIRL STORM is a flash fiction collection of realist, romance, sci-fi, and fantasy with solely female characters written by Hai-Mo Hu. The stories include lesbian love and their breakup, Asian culture, friendship, different plans for the future, age gap, school life, rebellion, returning home, a mermaid, aliens, and what is it like to be a woman.
GIRL STORM contains six stories of realist, romance, sci-fi, and fantasy.
"The Mist" is the journey of Tris trying to break up with her girlfriend, Sam. Tris is always intimidated and thus not sure about their relationship by Sam's dominating and seemly indifferent attitude. As soon as the breakup conversation in the library starts, it denatures the atmosphere and even the couple's relationship like the misty weather outside.
"Blackbird Flies" is inspired by the Beatles' song. It is a simple conversation about future plans between two best friends. Growing up together in a Taiwanese coastal town, Emily and Kayla have very different views toward their future. Kayla is going to stay in the town, and she expects the same from Emily because best friends stick together. However, Emily is secretly thinking otherwise......
"Regular Female" is the sci-fi representative in the collection. It follows the experience of a young Asian woman presenting her memories as a woman on earth to the aliens. She provides four memories from four different phases in her life. The purpose of the aliens is unknown, but they are collecting memories in order to build a database of the regular females on earth.
"Typhoon" follows the breakup process of a lesbian couple in Taiwan. Tris (a different person than the first story) is planning to break up with Angie but she can never find the right moment. She thinks the age gap between them is making her unable to see their future together. The conversation breaks out while a typhoon is lingering outside, leaving the two of them stuck together. Tris is right. Typhoon days really are not the best time to break up.
"Before The Next Bell" follows Jessica as she goes on a rebellious journey of finding out the noise that is bothering her. Jessica studies in a Taiwanese boarding school, and she is a well-behaved student by Asian standards. However, on this night, she cannot grab herself back from being distracted by the noise outside. Extremely unlike her usual self, she lies to the teacher so that she can go figure out the noise.
"When Hermit Crab Found Its Way Home" is the fantasy representative in the collection, and the setting of the beach is based on where the author grew up. Zoe gave up her magic power years ago to go live a life in the big city. Now, even though she cannot regain her power, she wishes to come home. In order to come back home, she has to earn the forgiveness of Zuma, the mermaid who rules the town.

Thank you for downloading this ebook. This is a collection of my very first English flash fictions. I wrote the most of them as assignments for a creative writing bachelor’s degree. I hope you enjoy them!
The Mist
A vast group of light gray surrounds the library. The mist outside blocks any chance of seeing. Tris sits by the window. Her eyes lose track of the narrative line of a shiny and modern-font book on her lap. Such terrible weather! What if she doesn’t show up today? Tris thinks and scratches the lizard-skin, red spots on the back of her hand.
A scent of floral shampoo and sunshine on fresh laundry captures Tris’ attention. There’s a rhythmic tap on her shoulder. What are you reading?
asks a young woman with short hair and floral dress, smiling.
Tris shows the young woman the cover of the book and says, You’re later than usual, Sam.
She’s not surprised by the young woman.
I like the idea of an adaptation from classic literature,
says Sam. Her fingers glide through the book cover.
Tris stares at Sam but Sam focuses on the book. The point of meeting up today forms a sentence, then, crawls into a ball and clogs up Tris’ throat.
I’m gonna go find myself something to read,
says Sam, leaving a kiss on Tris’ cheek. Specks of dust jump into the air as she fixes her
