Chapter 1

The door behind her fell shut with a bang.

Ann glanced over her shoulder and saw that her sister had followed her outside. The wind that ceaselessly blew dust through the abandoned streets yanked hard at her coat. Ann hadn’t yet pulled her own hood over her head, but it was the first thing her sister did when she stepped outside. It threw such a dark shadow over her face that her bony features were almost entirely swallowed up by it.

Not that it mattered.

Ann knew her sister’s face so well that her imagination filled in the shadowy shapes. Even though she didn’t see it now, Ann felt like she saw her sister’s face as clearly as when they sat together in the kitchen a few moments ago, with the candle between them.

Go back inside, Ann told her. It’s getting dark.

I’ve at least ten minutes left, answered her sister over a loud wail of the wind.

Ann looked down the abandoned street and saw the sun had already sunken behind the battered stone houses. The orange glow made the innumerable particles of dust blow into the air by the fierce wind flicker with reflected light. Ten minutes, her sister said. Ann wasn’t so sure that it would be that long before the sun set behind the horizon. Probably more like seven or eight.
