    Prologue

    Where Marcus, MacGregor came from

Back in the 15th century, it happens in the Lowlands of Scotland. There is a hidden valley where Fairy people lived. Their home was behind the waterfall. These Fairies were the size of humans. One day a mischiefs young Fairy woman was taken to the valley of the dead. She didn’t remember what had happened to her. She couldn’t recall those missing days. When they found her, she was with child? The months went by fast; she never remembers who the father was. When the time came, she gave birth to a boy. Not long after the child was born, she had died. As time went by, they found he did many bad things.

Many said that a demon mated with his mother. For him to stay on earth his mother had to die. The Fairy boy was called Marcuse he was always in trouble. He did many evil things. When he was older, he tries to rape many of the young Fairy’s. Marcuse thought of them as women to only bare his children. He was vanished from the land of the Fairy’s; they had sent him far away.

    *****

The King and Queen had their last child, a little girl called Kina. She was to take over for her mother. Queen Marviline had a close friend. When she was trying for their last child.

Wendy wanted to become a mother; the Fairy men was not what she wanted. She had a dream that told her about this human. In the dream showed her going outside be on the waterfall. One day she had made up her mind to find this man. What the dream told her that this man would give her twins.

    *****

That day was a beautiful sunny day. As she came out from the waterfall, she saw him. There he laid in the grass; his shirt was off. Even his kilt was over his lower parts. It looked as if he was swimming without his clothes on. Windy looked at this human, she even looked under his kilt. This is a man who takes care of himself. What she didn’t know he was a wizard with magic of his own. For one moment she wonders if he had a dream like hers. Why was he here like this, is he hoping a fairy would take him? Could he know about the valley?

She felt he was dreaming so she took advantage of it. With her magic the two of them did a ribbon ceremony. Windy thought she set it up nicely this felt real to her. She could feel the ribbon going around their hands.

She thought it was time they went on their honeymoon. Then she saw him use his magic. He had made them a cave that was under the water. He took his bride there, so no one would know he was married. Before they went into the water, he took off her clothes. There he enjoys swimming with Wendy. It was time to go into the cave, holding hands they came into the cave he made. Her hands enjoyed touching him, she was bowl to touch his jewels.

Johnathan gently would touch her as they swam. He would go under water and pulled her to his mouth. There was a rock he put her on. Playful he touches her breast, as he rubs his thumb over her nipple. He would move down to her heat. When he found what he was looking for. He would play with it until she pushes his finger inside. On the rock he laid her half over on her back. He could push his heat a little inside her. Johnathan move his heat in an out of her. Just a bit at a time until he felt a wall.

    *****

It was time to lift her out of the water. He had made a bed for them to make love in. When he kissed her, she found that she was caught in the dream she made. No, it was no dream, Wendy knew it was real he had married her. For he was a man that didn’t give his seed to anyone. It was only for his wife; she remembered at the end of the ceremony. He spoke these words. I give ye my name MacGregor. In Jesus name Amen. Then he said I know ye are a Fairy with strong magic of your own. We will keep this as a dream if ye like. When the time is right ye will find me again. My love ye will stay with me until ye conceive my children. For a long time, I been looking for someone like ye.

    *****

This was no dream he knew just what he was doing. His hand moved over her body; it was amazing how he made her feel. In a whisper he said, honey when I give ye my seed. Ye could have twins. The moment he came inside her she knew that he was the man for her. No Fairy made her what them. This man knew how to please her. Somehow this was to be. He made love to her many times through that month. He took her to his home and there he made love to her. She knew his body as he knew hers, near their last night together. Wendy conceived his child; it was as if a bright light filled her. She had seen that light in the back of her eyes. Then she knew he had given her twins. With her magic she left him in the spot she had found him. She knew his name it was Johnathan D Gregor. Didn’t he have another name she thought. What was her name he gave her Mrs. Wendy MacGregor?

    *****

When it was time to have her two babies’. Wendy’s sister took her outside of the kingdom to have her children. Her husband was in the Highland’s. She had her children in his home. What she didn’t know he watched her give birth to two boys. Wendy gave her sister her second son to raze as her own. Sindy she was on able to have a child.

    *****

With her baby went to look for work. The place she went to was Johnathan D Gregor. He had brought her into his place. Johnathan loved children he loved the little boy. He told Sindy to keep up his home. That she and the child could stay here with him. Sindy looked a lot like Wendy. He knew the child was his. Sindy wasn’t his wife that part he knew.

Wendy went back to the land of the Fairy’s. She had brought her son to Queen Marviline. At that time, she was with child. Marviline love to hold this little boy. As he got older, he would listen to the baby inside the Queen. At times the baby felt as if she was upset. When Wendy brought her son to visit with Marviline. She would take Kenyon and hold him. Kina would stop as she listens to his heartbeat.

After Marviline had her baby, Wendy brought her son to meet Kina. Kenyon was left up so he could see Kina. His little hand touched the baby’s hand. Kina took hold of his finger and wouldn’t let go. There was a strong bond with the two of them.

    *****

Wendy had two sons, her first born she called him Kenyon. Her next son was called Raiman. Kenyon was all ways with Kina. That had changed his mother had another dream. It was about her first born. The time had run out her son had to be with his father.

Johnathan was watching his wife with their another son. Raiman learn how to use the water like his father. One day he caught his son watching his mother and brother. Raiman could talk to Kenyon he told him how to use the water.

Then he uses the water to see why Marcuse was after Kina. Somehow, he saw the trip for his father. He had gone into the future and saw what Marcuse was going to do. That night he told his mother they had to go. The man called Jonathan will be attack by Marcuse. He is sending demons to kill him. Kenyon was waiting for him; he also had magic. His magic was strong for a boy of ten. At the time Marcuse didn’t know he had magic. When the demons attack him. Kenyon had taken one of the demons down. It gave Jonathan time to take down the other demons. Why was Marcuse going after him? He better explores the future on the boys and himself.

From that point Jonathan took him into his home. He had looked at the young man, he had brought him to the Highlands. The young man looked so much like Raiman. Both boys enjoyed playing together, they went to school together. One day the two boys was talking with their mother. She gave them hugs and kissed them on their cheeks. Wendy had stay to long with her sons. When Jonathan had come home and saw her laughing with the boys. That’s when she was going to use her magic to get away. Both boys grabbed an arm, Kenyon spoke. No mamma it is time we become a family. Your husband needs ye as much as we do.

    Chapter One

    Scotland in 17th Century

It has been a long day, he wanted to go up stares to his room. Until he heard talking in the den, what he heard upset him. There was a storm building outside and in his mind. Thomas took two stares at a time. In his room a flash of lightning went passed his window. He knew he wasn’t going to get much sleep tonight. There was too much on his mind. Another flash of lightning lit his room up. He had closed his door and went over to light a candle. Thomas had gotten undress an put a nightshirt on. He walked over to the window to watch the lightning dance over the land. In the darkened window Thomas saw his reflection. A young man of nineteen stood staring at him. How could things have changed this fast? Tonight, everything that has happen nine months ago until now. We’re giving him too much to think about. If it wasn’t the lightning it was his thoughts kept him up.

    *****

Just before he went upstairs, he had overheard his parents talking with the Hearts. At first, he thought the subject was his sister and William’s sister. They would be turning sixteen and able to marry. The two families were making a list of suitors for the two girls. Why did his parents put William on the top of his sister’s list? Then Thomas heard his name. The Hearts had his name on the top of Eleanor’s list. She was like a sister to him; William felt the same way about Catherine. What were their parents thinking of? How could he marry his best friend’s little sister? Why did their parents even think about this?

It was only nine months since the burial of his sister-in-law and nephew. Four men were missing and two of them were his brothers. The other men were Peter his cousin and William’s older brother Jonathan. Why did his two brothers have to leave? He knew Ronald blamed himself for the death of his wife and child.

Then lightning had danced across the sky breaking into his thoughts. Thomas watched another flash. This time it made a spider web and lit up the land below. This storm there was a battle against night and day. Each time the darkness took over right after the lightning hit. Could that be the same with good and evil? There were just seven hours until sunrise. Thomas needed to get some rest. He went to bed and snuffed out the candle, he turns away from the window to get some sleep. Even doing so, try as he may his thoughts wouldn’t let him. He could hear the man who found his sister-in-law. Those thoughts dance through his mind. It didn’t help when he overheard his father and brother Michael had thought she was killed. The three men thought this was no accident.

Marian even said something spooked her horse. She told them she couldn’t stop the horse because the buggy broke away. When the wheel hit the rock, it flipped the buggy over on top of her. That man had asked why she was driving that buggy alone in the first place.

Thomas’s father explained everyone was out on rounding up the horses. Marian was going to stay home. The one who brought her the note said her mother was hurt and calling for her. When Marian went to the barn to get the buggy ready. She found the buggy ready to go. She didn’t think nothing was wrong, with no one around. She assuming the same person who had brought the note had hitched up the buggy. Marian was five months pregnant, she climbed aboard and set out for her mother’s place.

That Good Samaritan who had found Marian had explained. "Marian’s accident was deliberate. He had seen it unfold; something had spooked her horse. The buggy had broken away leaving Marian unable to control the buggy. That wheel hit a boulder flipping the buggy over on top of her. By the time he was able to get the buggy off her, Marian was in labor.

Ronald made it back in time to be in the room when his son was born. His child wasn’t ready to be born. He was holding his son when he took his last breath. Ronald knew his wife was not long for this earth. Thomas had no idea how to help his brother. He just ran out of the castle to the bench in the rose garden.

He knew the moment his sister-in-law passed on. In his dream, he heard that bloodcurdling scream once again. This time it was the thunder. Thomas could hear the rain come pouring down as it hit his window. How could Ronald bear it? If Thomas took a wife and it happened to him, what would he do?

These thoughts drove him out of bed. Thomas lit the candle and went back to the window. In the days following his sister-in-law’s and nephew’s death, he often stood with Ronald. Why did he run when his brother needed him? He knew it had been the raw pain that was in his brother’s eyes that struck him. Thomas couldn’t handle seeing all that pain. He had to run he never had to handle death. When his grandparents died, he was too young to remember. Now not much could scare him, but that night did. He knew he could fight a man. When ye fight with a man that was different. It would be to save someone’s life that he cared for. To see the one, he cared about or loved die. Because of evil this man wanted our family name to be wiped out, but why? Thomas had always seen Ronald as a strong, stoic hero. The death of Marian and the baby had devastated Ronald; how could he ever hope to handle such a loss himself?

    *****

It was time to look over other things he went through. Thomas never looked at this incident before, it had been with Eleanor and himself. Just last spring when the fish came back to mate, a bear came after Eleanor. She was only getting the fire ready; for her to cook two of the fishes for their lunch. While he kept fishing for more fish.

What he remembers was enjoying the way she looked that day. He never had feelings for her in that way before. His little friend took notice of her, that never happen until that day. After taking care of his friend. He thought of giving her a hand with getting the fire going. Walking out of the water he headed to where Eleanor was at. That’s when he heard the scream. Right then he had his dirk out, he was running towards where the scream came from.

This part was a little fuzzy. Everything he did seem to go in slow motion. He was there when the bear hit her the second time. She had her back to the bear. That’s when he hit her arm and back, spinning her around. She screams again, for a moment their eyes met. He saw the fear in her eyes. Her arms came up to block another blow.

Thomas remember running and screaming at the bear, trying to get him to look his way. He had thrown rocks at the bear; nothing had changed his mind. For a moment, the bear looked at me. Eleanor try to get away, but he hit her slamming her into that big rock. There was so much blood coming from her body, fear of losing her went through his mind.

Thomas remember going mad, he didn’t care what happen to him. All he knew was get that damn bear away from Eleanor. He had thrust his dirk into the bear side. Then the bear hit him across his chest. Now he had his attention, the bear was moving slowly. It gave Thomas time to jump on his back. Why did that bear go after Eleanor? What he saw on the bear’s head was an injury. There were fishes hanging in the tree. The bear could have had the fish, but he attacked Eleanor instead. The moment he saw the bear clawed Eleanor; and all that blood coming from her. Thomas thought he must have gone mad. To save her life he jumped on the bear’s back and fought like a madman. All he remembers that bear need to die. I can’t handle any more of this memory right now.

Besides why do his parents want him to take Eleanor for his bride? No… I can’t think about that right now. Why do I have to think of these feelings I may have for her? I can’t do it. Now if I were able to be here for Eleanor’s coming-out party. Maybe then I would see if there were more to these feelings. Damn it… I must find my brothers. Ronald asked me to come after him. If only my parents would give me until I was twenty-one to find them."

    *****

Thomas was walking back and forth, then back to the window. How could I ask Eleanor to wait for me for two years? What if I met someone and Eleanor wasn’t the one for me? I don’t know about these feelings I have for her.

Thomas then remembered his father speaking up for him. Daniel spoke. Thomas and William won’t like this idea to be on Eleanor’s and Catherine’s list. Ye, know they do think of them as their other sister.

Then he remembers hearing his mother Franceam speaking. I believe that they should court the girls before they leave. They’re leaving in three weeks; this should give the boys enough time. They’re not little boys they are men. Once the boys cross over. They must stop thinking of them as their little sister or just a little girl. Our son must think of her as a woman. Maybe they will find out, that they their true loves.

What would happen if my parents were right about Eleanor being my true love? Could William have conflicting feelings for Catherin? If we don’t court them now and they find someone else. It will be too late after their married. My mother already knows that Uncle Donald would like to get started in three weeks. He had sent Duncan ahead to find the first town in which they will stay. Would it be enough time to see if Eleanor could be the one?

    *****

Thomas stared at himself in the darkened window. His thoughts went back to his brother. Ronald why didn’t ye tell me yourself. Do ye know who’s the one that’s trying to kill all the MacGregor men. Damn it! I can’t handle all these feelings. Ye gave me too much to think about. All these things in my head I don’t know where to start. I have done what ye asked of me. Uncle Donald and Duncan will be going with me to find ye.

Thomas ran a hand through his hair. "Why did ye take William’s brother? Jonathan and Peter are cousin was dying a slow death. Aye… they are grate fighters but the two of them can’t last for long. I have a feeling this man wouldn’t play fair. No Jonathan and Peter didn’t want to die the way they were going. Did they come to ye when they found out ye were going back? I would say aye… The men ye went up against, did ye know that they were hired killers?

"I figured out that Peter was taking Michael’s place. Ye had asked him to find these men. I understand now what ye said about Michael. That I don’t have to worry about getting married. Did ye stand with our brother when he got married? I hope so.

That is why he was gone a lot he had gotten married. "Ye sent Hauk to pick up the three bodies. Then he went after that man that started all of this. Ye wanted him to pay for what he had done to your family. Is that your plan for Michael? Brother did ye know I would feel Michael’s grief. I can imagine what it was like to watch ye die. Ronald ye were the best fighter around. Ye knew they were coming after ye. If the three of us were together we could have taken them down. Instead ye kept Michael and I away from the three of ye. I felt something was wrong, Ronald did ye have to called to Michael? I felt the anger from him those men were going to do something to the bodies. I remember it was dark that night. Did he have to use his ability to see in the dark to save the bodies? These dreams have been keeping me up at night. Why couldn’t ye tell me? Ye know I wouldn’t tell our parents.

"Damn it! Ye set me up. Ye knew our parents would want me to choose a wife? Ye let me think our parents only care about the MacGregor’s name. Did the two of ye knew I would go through this courtship. What am I going to do if I pick a woman to marry? If that man comes after her and they kill her. Ronald I couldn’t handle the death of your wife and son. Especially knowing they were murdered. This was an attempt to stop the MacGregor name to go on. Jonathan heard that they were going after William. They didn’t want the Heart’s men fighting for Scotland’s rights. How can I handle the moment when I find your bodies? I wasn’t strong enough to help ye when I saw the fear and pain in your eyes.

I pray to God that I will be able to help ye now. Ronald I’m sorry that I ran. Does that make me a coward? When I looked into your eyes, that’s what had scared me. Do ye know that they want me to court Eleanor. That night when I ran from the castle, she followed me. The tears rolled down my cheeks, I didn’t care if she saw me crying. It felt good to have her near me. She just sat down on the bench with me.

Then she patted her lap, and I laid my head down. I had my arms around her back holding on to her for dear life. I wish ye were here. Then ye could tell me what that meant. Damn it! Both of ye are gone, I have no one to ask. Ronald how did ye know that Marian was the one. I’m scared if I choose Eleanor, what if they find out about her, they could kill her. I don’t think I’m strong enough to handle losing her. How could I keep her safe? What is this? Am I starting to let my feelings come to the surface?

    *****

Then the lightning had another fight with darkness, it started to down pore. The wind was pushing the rain into the glass. It seems that his brother wouldn’t let his mind rest. Now he was remembering the talk they had. He had to tell me why he had to leave the Highlands. Thomas had to close his eyes. The day was sunny the earth was wet from the rain the night before. His brother mind seems to be far away. Could he be thinking of his wife.

Then out of the blue he started talking. Thomas, I feel so guilty I should have been here. Then they wouldn’t have gone after my wife and unborn son. They did a good job setting it up. Michael told me that he had scents that magic was involved. That wagon went right over that big rock. What better way to cut into that bord? Then when she went by him, he could spook the horse. With magic he could make sure the wheel hit that rock. Why did I have to get involve with the government? Because there are bad men out there trying to take over our country. For many years, the MacGregor’s men have been fighting for Scotland’s government. My duty was also to my country. Men and women have already paid a big price for their freedom and so have I.

Then Ronald looked off in the distant. "Little brother ye may be the youngest male in this family. There are things that I’m going to put ye through. I want ye to remember ye are a strong fighter. Ye are the best swordsman around the Highlands. Ye can handle a dirk and hit what ye throw it at. Ye could out throw Michael and me. Dad said ye are just like granddad’s brother. He was call Eagle-eyes like ye are. Little brother I hope ye will understand this part. I have unfinished business and will be leaving soon. Thomas there are things that I’m asking ye and Michael to do for me. There are thing ye will have to fine.

    *****

Then Ronald saw a magnificent golden eagle overhead. Little-brother do ye see that eagle?

Thomas remember nodding his head yes. Aye… I enjoy watching those magnificent eagles.

His brother looked at him. "Ye would say those eagles are free to fly were ever they like. When that eagle takes a mate, he don’t have to share her with anyone.

He could see the expression on Ronald’s face had gone serious. "Did ye know that us Highlanders at one time couldn’t have the one we married first. Did ye know that grandfather had to go to battle so he could have his woman for himself. Back then the Nobles would take their woman that they had just married to bed first. She had to let the Nobles have her even though to her he was raping her.

It took us until 1603 to unite the two crowns of Scotland and England. There was a lot of fighting even then. I remember when Dad was a part of that. By the very end of the 1690, Dad had enough with the fighting, being the oldest I took over for him. I remember stories that Dad told us about how Granddad lost his brother in one of those battles. Little-brother because of those men we now have the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In this time frame we’re trying to form the two countries and give them their governments. Thomas, it took us this long, and here it is 1707. I’m afraid that there will be a fight... even now. Can ye not understand why we are fighting so hard for our freedom? Don’t ye remember the stories that our father and grandfather told us as boys. Thomas the MacGregor’s has had their hands in how the future of Scotland would be shaped?

Then there was the question that his brother asked him. What do ye see when ye look out over the horizon?

Through the rain Thomas looked over the horizon. He remembers that his answer didn’t please him. "Ronald, I don’t know much about the outside. I know of the land and the beauty around us. I never seen the outside of are family land and the town. The stories dad told us I didn’t understand. Back then I was working hard on my skills. Tell me what ye see.

Thomas remember standing in the garden with his older brother. Ronald’s words burned in his memory. He remembers watching his brother looked over the family land. His brother’s voice softened, and he spoke. I see the land of Scotland, to me the land is a virgin. There are parts of her that know man has ever laid their hands on.

Thomas heard the passion and pain pouring through Ronald’s voice. He felt ashamed not to know what his brother knew as he watched him surveyed the land. While he spoke, Thomas could feel how important this was to him. We are playing a very serious game; these evil men will try to stop any MacGregor from helping our people. Ye see the land is the prize. We are fighting to see who will lay their hands on her first. We Scots are proud people we are not sheep. They can’t lead us around and use us as slaves. Ye know many men and women have given their lives. Right now, all over Scotland we have held ourselves back from indulging our rights. We should not relinquish our privilege to have our legal system. We Scots are working to retain our entitlement to have our own Church. We need to teach and give our children the kind of education that we see fit to give. They are trying to wipe out everything we believe in. When ye takeout the history of Scotland, ye can change the people the way they want ye to think.

Thomas thought he had everything he needed. He has his own land; he can fight to keep what he has. What his brother was telling him that these men will come here if we let them. Now he knew what he must do. When he is away, he will learn what his brother is telling him. Any stories and old person tells him he will listen to them. He will see what is out there. Thomas has the ones that will go with him. He has everything is in motion.

    *****

It’s time for him to see why it is so importin for him to court Eleanor. The rain had stopped, soon it will be sunrise. There was still a lot to think about. Why does his mother think Eleanor is the one for him? What has she seen to make her think I’m in love with her? It must be when the bear attacked her last year. What did momma say? That I must think of her as a woman. It’s time to cross over and find out why she knows I’m in love with Eleanor.

Thomas went back to bed; he snuffs out the candle and laid on his back. He closed his eyes and thought of Eleanor, what was it when he ran from the castle? She came after him and he remembers not being afraid to show her how he was feeling. No, he must go back farther. Last year the two of them was always together. There were things about her what were they. He had noticed her breast were bigger. Aye… I like that very much. Then he remembers the promise to William to always call her his little sister. That had killed a lot of feelings about Eleanor. I must take that out of the picture. What else did he like about her; she was wearing her hair down for him. Sometimes he would help her down from her horse. She always made sure that he could smell her hair. The scent was of roses even her skin had that scent, and it was soft to the touch. He found out that he liked to hold her around her waist.

All right I must keep going. At the riverside when they were fishing. Eleanor always got right in the water with him. Now he could see her hike up her skirt. She had long legs that looked to be strong. His thoughts were going where he never let himself go. If she were on her back, what would happen if she grabbed him around the waist with those legs.

That did it the thoughts he had kept at bay has popped up literally. He had gotten out of bed and walked over to the window. But why did he stop thinking any farther. What did he feel when he thought that way? Thomas looked down at himself his friend was growing. He remember going into the cool water that day, so she didn’t see him. After his friend was gone to sleep. He started to see if she needed help. That’s when he heard the scream.

He knew what happened to the bear, that part he has already gone over. What did he feel when he looked at her body? There was so much blood when he ran to her. His thoughts were please don’t die? Then he told himself stop thinking do what ye know. He ripped his sleeve off his arm so he could clean her up. One of the pans he use to get water to see how bad the wound was. He knew it was bad, with the other sleeve he made a bandage. Then he went to make something to carry her in. He use the rest of his shirt to tie the branches together. Carefully he laid her on the cot he made. Thomas dragged that cot for a long time. How far was he away from the castle, it was over three miles. That part didn’t madder to him.

When he got home his brothers tried to take her in. He remembered yelling at them. Stop right there. I’ll bring her into the castle. Then he saw his mother. He rambled his words out what his mother needed to know. She was attack by a bear; the cuts are deep mamma. Where can I lay her down at? She had told me to take her to the room across from me. All that time his brother and father walked behind him. At last, he got her to the bed. Mamma don’t worry about me. Just take care of Eleanor. I don’t know what I would do without her in my life. I remember touching Eleanor’s face then looked at his mother. What did his mother see when he looked at her? Thomas closed his eyes he had to bring all those feelings back. There was fear and he was worried if she may die. Then he open his eyes what he saw was his brother’s eyes. Right then he made his mind up that he would court Eleanor.

Thomas knew he couldn’t sleep; it was almost sunrise. After getting dressed he took the candle and made his way down the hallway to the back door. Ones outside he made his way to the rose garden. By the light of the candle, he saw shadows coming toward him. It was a mouse running for his life. He didn’t stop just kept running past Thomas. The other shadow was their barn cat. He was trailing just three leaps behind the mouse.

Thomas walked to the bench in his mother’s rose garden, where he would watch the sunrise. The light from the sun had slowly taken over the night. The ghostly shadows of the night were being chased back. It was dreamy to watch the sunlight push back the darkness. In the fields when the light hit, a small herd of large red deer was lurking in the shadows of the night.

The grief of losing three family members was heavy on his mind. Thomas knew Ronald would never hunt these majestic creatures again. Would that also be Michael’s fate? No… Michael would give Ronald his promise, to find those other men that is in volve with these killers. At first, he was so angry with Michael, but thinking about all of this. Ronald must have had this plan out. What he didn’t know was they would come after his wife and unborn child. That’s why Michael kept his wife out of the picture. Ronald put a lot on both of our shoulders. Why was I feeling Michael left me with all of this? Because I haven’t cross over to manhood. Didn’t Ronald tell me he will make me grow up faster. A tear rolled down his cheek. Quickly Thomas brushed it away. I’m not a baby to give into tears like this, not again."

    *****

Thomas thought he would look back to see if he missed anything of what Ronald had said. That day he had turned and faced me. It must have shown in Thomas’s expression. That he didn’t understand what he was talking about. He spoke, I see that this history lesson is boring to ye. Little brother. Damn it, Thomas remember he had made a fist, I can’t call ye that anymore. After we leave ye will be going over this of what ye must do. Brother, I know ye will figure everything out. Ones ye do that ye will be stepping into manhood.

Then Ronald stopped and bent his head down. "I can’t call ye little brother anymore. Thomas ye will all ways be Michael and my little brother. What I’m about to ask ye to do for me, will change every part of your life. Everything granddad, dad, and I have done is for our people. Somehow, I know ye will add your part to it also. We wouldn’t have our history to tell our children. Thomas it will even affect your children. One day ye will tell them of what their grandfather and their uncle did for them. Scot’s dream of issuing our banknotes. We may or may not get that right. All of this is necessary for the growth of Scotland.

Thomas one day soon ye will understand what I’m telling ye. There will come a time when ye will look over the horizon and be able to see the whole picture. It is not just the land… it is the people who live and work in Scotland. That is why I must go. This way the death of my wife and only son will not be in vain. Do ye understand a little of what I say to ye Thomas?

    *****

Time had slipped away from him. He had his hands over his eyes remembering those days with Ronald. The sun was fully out now. Thomas felt a gentle hand on his head. He knew that touch was Eleanor as she brushed his hair. He didn’t think but just act. His arms went around her waist pulling her closer to him. His cheek pressed under her breast as he held her.

He thought could his parents be right? Now he was thinking that he shouldn’t do this. Eleanor wasn’t his sister, and he wouldn’t do it to Catherine. Who is his only sister? Aye… Mamma is right I need to know if Eleanor is the one for me.

She was so tender with him, her hand felt so good. He knew if she kept doing this he would go to sleep. Then he heard her sweet voice. Thomas, were ye thinking of your brother Ronald and Michael? Ye can’t blame yourself. Ronald had to leave, ye tried to stop him but couldn’t. Nor could ye stop Michael from going with them. My family couldn’t stop Joseph my older brother either.

Thomas looked up and saw Eleanor. How could one young woman know him as well as she did? He thought am I starting to cross over with her? I’m trying to think of her as a woman, is that why she knows him so well? She looks at him as a man and woman does. Aye…

He sat back and looked at her, she smells of roses he thought. Thomas tried to give her a big smile. She looked so pretty in her work clothes with her scarf and her long golden-brown hair showing. When did Eleanor become a woman? Where has he been to be that blind? Ye know me too well young lass. What brings ye here so early this morning?

    *****

Eleanor brushed his silky jet-black hair from his eyes. Something was happening to her. It had started last year. The day Thomas had saved her life from that bear. From that day on, she started to look at Thomas different. When their eyes met, she looked deep into those golden-brown eyes. He’s been in her life for a long time. Then she spoke. Ye said that ye were going to clean the rose garden today. I would like to know if ye like some help?

    *****

Thomas was studying her face closely when his eyes met hers. Why do these bluish-green eyes bewitch him? What was so different about them today? Aye... I would love the help. It is always nice when ye come over to help me. I will miss having ye around. The two of us had some good times together.

Thomas couldn’t look at her when he said. I don’t think we will be able to do this when I get back. Ye are almost sixteen, soon ye will be having your coming-out party. I’m sorry that I won’t be here to dance with ye.

When she heard that from him her eyes changed. He had to walk away from her. Those words had hurt her and him deeply. Then he heard the cry of a golden eagle, he was flying overhead. In his mind he called to Ronald, are ye free now? Did ye send me this eagle to tell me it’s over with, are ye save? The feeling that came back to him it’s not all over with. The bodies was safe.

He bent his head then spoke. "Eleanor when Ronald was still here, he gave me this talk. No… it was more of a lesson. I didn’t understand why the entire talk was about Scotland. I think I know now. At the time there was an eagle overhead. Now there is another eagle, I think I will take it as a sign. I believe our brothers are dead. They knew what was going to happen when they went back.

"From the time they had left I’ve haven’t been able to sleep. The dreams shown me of men fighting, it was dark and rainy that night. Ronald and the others had died on that night. There was this group of men who will stop them any way they can. Our cousin Peter went with them; he is the same age as Michael. If Peter were not a McKinnon, I would believe he was Michael’s twin brother. I don’t understand why those two went along until now. Ronald said he had plans for Michael. I think I know what kind of plans. Michael is the best shot around the Highlands. Eleanor, I think our brothers and my cousin knew they wouldn’t come home whole. Two of them were sick. What better way to die, than in a fight of their choosing? There were things that Ronald said that didn’t make sense to me. He said that Michael had found his sweet love and fallen in love with her. I believe that our parents don’t know about this. Ronald said they were going to make sure that Michael stayed out of this skirmish.

"Eleanor, if I’m right. Michael will be taking over where Ronald left off. These evil men must die. He could have told Michael he must come after them, only after a few hours had passed. This would make sure their bodies would be buried in a safe place, until I come after them. Every time I saw them talking, I went over to listen. I believe that is what will happen. After their bodies are safe. Michael will be going after the men who gave the orders for their deaths.

I wonder if three brothers could feel each other’s pain. That night Michael was afraid for Ronald. Then I felt he was angry; I believe he saw the battle in his dream. He knew Ronald didn’t want to have his life saved. He had to take down those evil men. When he got to Ronald, I saw a big fire. I think Michael stop them from burning Ronald alive. That was the anger I felt, he was shooting his arrows as fast as he could. Michael had taken down the men that Ronald couldn’t. I’m so tired of these nightmares, I haven’t gotten much sleep.

    *****

Eleanor stay quiet and let him talk. She clean the last of the rose bushes while he talked.

She was so worried about him, she wanted to help him. How about ye go over by the tree and close ye eyes for a little while. I’m almost done with this rose bush.

Thomas sat on his heels and looked at this young woman. He thought, how in hell does Eleanor always know when I need her the most? Ye are getting your clothes dirty from the wet soil.

She gave him a little giggle, quickly she had a comeback. Thomas ye know that is why they call them work clothes.

Thomas just looked at her and shook his head. He couldn’t stop himself from yawning. He had to rub his eyes to stay awake. Eleanor ye know the story about these rose bushes. Ye also know how my mother’s garden got so big. It is my turn to bring her a rose bush home. I’m so tired I can’t stop thinking.

Eleanor got to her feet; the rose bush was done. She had brushed her clothes off and stretched out her hand. Thomas, I want ye to come with me. Ye need to get some sleep.

He let her lead him over to the tree. She sat down on the ground and pat her lap. Will ye sit and lay ye head on my lap?

Thomas rubbed his eyes and walked with her. Eleanor I shouldn’t do this.

She just looked at him. Why not…? We done this before. We’re not doing anything wrong.

Thomas yawn again. Aye… we did do things like this before. No…, we’re not going to do anything.

When Thomas place his head on her lap and closed his eyes, he was out. In his mind there were things he had to tell her. What he thought of he spoke. "There is no other way to tell her this. Should I say ye will be having a coming-out party. Ye must understand I’m only nineteen. My parents don’t even know if their sons are dead. I must find my brothers, not go out and choose a bride. Can’t her mother and mine see this is too much for me to bear?

"Damn it…! I can’t talk to her that way. She is the only friend who helps me when she can. This sounds like I’m yelling at her. I don’t know what these feelings are for her.

"Damn that man! He killed Marian. If they know about me. They could kill my bride to be. I know what my mamma saw when the bear came after Eleanor. It was the same look Ronald had when his son died.

"Does that mean that she is more than a friend? I know I took what happen to us a part last night. I’ve enjoyed remembering how she looked. If that damn bear didn’t do what he did… Maybe I would have crossed over that day, and we would have had are first kiss. I know that promise to William will have to go, it keeps me in check. I never really looked at her face closely, I did last night. I love her long golden-brown hair when she lets it down. She always smells of roses and her skin is so soft. Aye… her breast is bigger now. It’s getting hard not to want to touch her. To look into those bluest green eyes and let her be witch me. Her lips are the shape of a heart, it says her name.

"Damn it…! If Eleanor is promised to me, they could hurt or kill her. I don’t care about myself just her. I’ve heard my mother say I must cross over. Aye… Eleanor is a woman now; I can see that. I don’t know much of love making. I haven’t kissed her yet; I really would like to do that before I leave. She knows me to well, now to see if she feels the same way as I do.

"Damn it…! I’m right back where I was, worrying if someone would kill her. It will kill me if she dies. I saw that when I laid her in bed. I don’t care about myself just her. Mamma is right, I must find out if she is the one for me. If it cost are friendship so, be it. Then again if we can be friends and lovers. Then we will be soulmates, we will have the best of both worlds.

"There is one thing we must do is play the game looking for a mate. If I do find out that she is the one for me. If we can’t stop touching each other. I will ask my parents to marry us. Eleanor can’t tell anyone that we are married. We still must play the game to look for a mate. This will be our cover; she can’t tell her mother of any of this. Her mother will tell everyone.

    *****

Eleanor couldn’t believe all that he told her. Could he love me as I love him?

That gave her hope. Now she was brushing his hair. Softly she ran her hand over his face. She loves when he lays his head in her lap. Eleanor felt joy and sadness at the same time. Even if we do marry, Thomas will have to leave me. I know I can’t hold him here. He keeps his promises. I don’t know if I could go on without him if he is killed. We both are scared if we lose each other.

The morning was almost over. Thomas, I have to go now it’s around 11:00. Time for me to help my mother fix our lunch. I’m learning to take care of a home and cook for my future husband. I’m also learning to be a healer and midwife. Your sister is also learning to be a midwife. Your mother and Grana also my mother need someone to take care of our people. They feel they’re getting too old to ride horses over hills and bad roads.

    *****

Thomas was turning over when he ran his hand up her leg. He didn’t know his hand was under her skirt at the time. Then he heard Eleanor suck in air. Her leg was soft and firm to the touch. He had stopped right there and try to pretend he was just turning over again. He had a feeling she knew he was a wake.

Eleanor had felt butterflies in her stomach, she didn’t know what was happening to her. In her mind she wish he could tell her what those butterflies was. Those feeling where knew to her. Then she repeated what she had said before. Thomas then opened his eyes. There was strong feelings that his little friend notice when he had touched her leg. How can I think that she is my sister, when she can make his little friend take notice? He found he liked what he had felt.

Now he was looking into her eyes. Did ye say ye have to go? I feel a lot better. Thank ye for your help. I’m sorry that ye were the one to hear me carry on like that.

Eleanor felt bowled and place a finger on his lips. He had kissed her finger then the inside of her hand. What I was going to say is our family would like me to court ye. Would ye want me too? I have until Duncan comes back.

Thomas notice her eyes lit up with what he said. As he had help her to her feet. "Aye… Thomas, I would like that a lot. There are things I need to find out about. Some say a kiss can tell a lot, or a touch. Mamma had told me that she was going to put your name on my list.

"About the roses, ye don’t have to thank me. I know if I need the help ye would be there. The two of us take care of the rose garden. Ye don’t have to ask me to help your mother with the roses.

    *****

Then Eleanor looked at Thomas. What ye said about our brothers. I didn’t tell ye, but I had a dream about my brother. I know he’s dead. He had told his friend to watch over his wife for him. To help her as much as he could. Oh, Thomas I’m afraid for ye. Those men are evil, they kill for money.

Eleanor went into his arms crying. He knew she would have a dream about her brother. That was the one thing the two of them have. When Eleanor dreams everyone listen to what she says. Thomas found he like holding her this way. He needed to let himself feel like a man would. He is not her brother, and William and he must have a talk about this. The promise must go away, so the two of them can find out if they loves each other sister. As only a man could love a woman.

Then Thomas pulled her away from him. He took her hand and kiss the back of it. The rose scent was there. Her skin was so soft. Ye said that ye have to go now. He had found that he watched a tear run down her cheek. Then he was catching the tear with his finger. Out of the blue he had put it into his mouth. Why did he do that? Something like that is private between to lovers. That is what a man does when he courts a woman. Damn it he thought, what are those feelings he’s been having? Then he open his mouth and spoke. I will always remember the times we played and worked together. Thank ye for helping my mother with the rose garden. My sister has a brown thumb.

For a long time, the two of them held hands. Thomas, I think I know how your brother felt about this place. When I look at these mountains, I love how it makes me feel. Mother Nature knows how to take care of her children every night. Can ye see how she tucked her children into bed? She carefully placed the clouds under the tops of the mountains… This is the way I would tuck my children, into bed each night. Quickly she said, I have to run. She kissed him on the cheek and ran for her horse.

    *****

It was too bad that Thomas couldn’t hear her thoughts. If he did, he would know that the children she imagined tucking into bed were their children. There was things he did she liked. Does she have a chance to become his wife?

Thomas watched Eleanor until he couldn’t see her anymore. For a moment he thought he heard her talking to him. Aye… he knew that she was thinking of their children. We will see, aye we will see.

Surveying the land, he could see the swimming hole where he and his brothers swam. This was the land their family fought and died for… They chose to live here on this land. Who wouldn’t love to wake up to all this beauty? Did one of his relations before him, ever come out here in the morning as he does? Here one could feel the warmth of the sun the moment the rays hit the earth. One could even enjoy the rich green grass after it rains. Strong feelings came over him and he spoke out loud. I must find my brothers. One way or another I will bring them home where they belong. This was his oldest brother’s last wish; it shall be done.

    Chapter Two

Eleanor can’t be called my sister

Thomas was walking to the barn to feed the horses when William rode up. Hay Thomas can we talk?

He turn toured his friend. William was just getting off his horse. Sure, what’s on your mind.

Thomas had gotten the oats out and was feeding
