About this ebook

Three best friends discover a Halloween magic store after hanging out in a unique shopping mall, possibly rumored to be haunted. The shopkeeper is holding a contest for the best Halloween costume to win prize cash and a golden trophy! When their best friend, Ariel Smiles, gets a text about it, they decide to check it out. However, the catch of the costume contest was not what they had in mind. Because the shopkeeper put a curse on them to be whatever they wear permanently on Halloween forever. Can the three teenage friends: Zack Mack, Joey Glory, and their friend Ariel, break the spell before turning into Mean Things on Halloween forever?

Because I wasn’t prepared, the Mean Thing was not ready to turn me like their kind. Desperate as I was to be a Mean Thing, I knew I shouldn’t feel rushed, not after my friends hung out together at the Rainbow Majestic Mall. The shopping mall was a large, clear-glassed stained building. And you can see everything inside from the outside parking lot. They even had a sparkling water fountain after the gates when entering the mall.

You may wonder what Mean Things are? They aren’t real untiless they want you to see what they are. I’ll explain more when I find out what exactly they are myself. My two best friends, Joey Glory and Ariel Smiles were hanging out at our local mall in October. I never knew they existed.

At the food court, we were drinking soda at the restaurant tables. Thinking of participating in the Halloween costume contest for our school’s holiday competition. Mr. Miranda, our high school principal, promised us the winner would be awarded $250 in cash plus a golden trophy with our name and the Halloween costume we wear engraved into the trophy.

I felt bummed out because I couldn’t think of anything scary enough to be original and frighten everybody. I turned to my friend Joey, who sat beside me, eating chili cheese fries from a striped red and white container. Dude, Halloween is getting too old for us, you know? I said.

Taking a long sip of Coke from his cup, my best friend whacked me. Joey almost choked on the chili cheese fries he took a bite out of. You don’t get it, Zack! Joey exaggerated with an emphasis in his voice. Halloween is the only time of the year; you get to be somebody else for the day and scare the souls out of everybody! he explained. Joey took one last bit out of his fries and tossed it into a nearby wastebasket. Why wouldn’t you want to be a part of Mr. Miranda’s exciting contest to win cold, hard cash?! my friend wondered, shaking his head.

I didn’t have a good explanation. So I just replied: I’m happy being myself these days. There’s no point in being somebody you probably shouldn’t be like. They might not be very nice to get to know, I said. Ariel seemed to agree with me. I took a long sip of my soda, almost emptying it.

Halloween doesn’t have to be a tradition for everybody once you get older, Ariel said. "As you said,
