    CLAIMS TO CALIFORNIA

    The United States was growing fast in the 1840s. Thousands of people had begun traveling west along the Oregon Trail. A group turned south, away from the popular Oregon Trail in 1844. They trekked over a peak in the Sierra Nevada and into the Sacramento Valley. This was the opening of the California Trail.
