Finding Your Financial Advisor
How to Understand the Industry and Confidently Hire the Best
Readers of this book should note that it is written with those seeking a full-service, advisory relationship with their financial advisor or financial advisor team in mind. Advisory relationships require a fiduciary standard of care. However, each investor’s situation is unique, and advisory services are not always an appropriate avenue. In some cases, a brokerage account may be better suited, especially when considering compensation and needed services. Brokerage services fall outside the fiduciary standard of care but do require financial advisors to satisfy a best-interest standard of care, and brokerage services can still play a vital role in helping investors reach financial goals. When choosing a financial advisor or a financial advisor team, it may be prudent to consider one who is able to provide both advisory services and brokerage services in order to be flexible enough to best meet clients’ needs. It is important to understand what you need, what you are paying for, and if your advisor(s) can fulfill those needs wherever they fall on the spectrum of service and product offerings.
The authors of this book are financial advisors, and opinions expressed are solely those of the authors.

When people seek financial advice or begin to search for a new financial advisor, it is usually because there has been a transition in their life, and they need help—retirement, the death of a family member, a divorce, or a career or lifestyle change.
