    CHAPTER ONE

One bright sunny day, a happy family was standing outside the front gates of a miniature golf course.  The mother of this family was named Betty Swinger, the father’s name was Bob Swinger, and their two children, one boy and one girl, were named Billy and Patricia.  Billy was eight years old and Patricia was seven.  They also had a smart family dog, a German Shepherd named Moose, who had short brown hair, pointed ears, and a black wet nose.  Moose’s long pink tongue hung out of his mouth, as he panted.

The Swinger family stood in the warm summer sun, admiring the amazing miniature golf course they had just purchased.  They were the new owners of the marvelous place!

Well, here it is gang, our new family business, said Bob Swinger.

Bob was a big, kind man with a friendly face.  He was a great Dad who loved his family.  He was proud of their new miniature golf course, which would continue to be a fun place for people of all ages . . . only under the Swinger family’s new ownership, it would be even bigger and better than before!

Customers playing the outdoor golf game had to try and hit colorful golf balls on tricky felt pathways leading to eighteen different holes.  The object of the game was for players to hit their balls using as few swings as possible with their golf clubs.  The putting greens the golf balls rolled over were in different zig-zag paths, which made the game challenging.  These felt trails also had different obstacles set up to block the way of the balls into the holes, making the game even harder.  Some of these obstacles were little windmills, castles and other funny, toy-like fantasy buildings placed on the course.

Playing miniature golf there was like putting around a magical fairyland, and at night, the whole place was colorfully lit up by outside lights!  Even the big man-made pond, the flowing waterfall, the water fountains, and winding rivers were all illuminated at nighttime.

The course had beautiful grounds too, filled with evergreen bushes, freshly cut grass, and gorgeous, blooming flowers of all shapes and colors.

A big sign out front advertised the golf course.  It was a brand new sign which read ‘Bob Swinger’s Miniature Golf Castle.’  Bob had been a professional golfer, who won awards playing on large golf courses for grown-ups.  He was famous, and in a brand new business now with his family.

Bob Swinger’s Miniature Golf Castle, said Bob, reading the big sign out loud.  What do you think? he asked his family.

It did look like a castle, with a miniature golf course surrounding it.  The pretend castle was actually a video game arcade and ticket booth.  Customers had to walk up a long brick pathway to enter the castle and golf course.  The castle was the golf course’s front entrance.  Lots of fun video games were inside.  There was also a snack bar, where kids could buy fresh popped popcorn, yummy hot dogs and pizza, sweet candy, soft drinks and delicious ice cream.  Some children even had birthday parties in there with all their friends.  The castle’s back door led to the outside miniature golf course.

"It sure looks like a castle," said Betty Swinger.  She had a kind face, and loved her children and husband very much.  Betty was a hard worker, a superb wife to Bob, and a wonderful mother to Billy and Patricia.

What a neat golf course! cheered Billy Swinger, all excited.  The mischievous boy had dark brown hair, and he wore a big smile on his face.  Through the black iron fence, he could see all the different little houses and fantasy structures of the golf course.  He could also see the course’s big pond, its running waterfall and water fountains, and its winding rivers.  The pond and rivers were man-made, like swimming pools with concrete bottoms.

    It’s got a windmill, a boat, a candy house, a palace, waterfalls, a big pond . . . Billy rambled.

. . . and all those video games in the arcade too, cut in his sister, Patricia Swinger.  She was a cute little girl, very smart for her age, with a pretty face and long blond hair.

Suddenly, an old convertible car drove up.  It rolled to a stop, and a mean looking man in a business suit hopped out.  He was bald, without a single hair on his sneaky head.  His teeth were also yellow from never brushing them.  His name was Mr. Fink, and he was the person who sold the miniature golf course to Bob Swinger.

Mr. Swinger? called out Mr. Fink.

Moose, the family’s German Shepherd, wasn’t happy to see the salesman.  He growled at Mr. Fink.  Grrrrrrrrrrgghh!

This scared the real estate salesman.  Nice doggy, don’t bite, he nervously told Moose.  Mr. Fink then shot a look to Billy.  "He
