    Chapter 1

This would be a pure vacation. I arrived at Dulles with two hours to spare. In the old days I would get to the gate five minutes before the door closed. Times have changed. I still had to get through security and make it to the departure area.

I needed a vacation. The South of France would due. The last time I was there I was chasing the multiplier and Dr. Ayub. Security was no problem. I had just one carry-on. Everything I had with me was vacation oriented. Dulles had phased out most of the monster people movers that would excite kids as they took you to your gate area. Now there was an automatic train shuttle and a longer than ever walk to the gate. I grabbed a cup of Starbucks Pike coffee, my ritual and my addiction, and made my way to gate 22 with the Air France flight to Nice boarding in 15 minutes. I took one of the empty gate area seats. A young lady, my guess early 20s, sat down one over. Clearly, she was crying and trying to hide it.

    Are You OK, I said

    I’m fine

The flight boarded. She was in the second group. I was about 10 people behind her. By the time I Robert row 25 she was already in the middle seat. Hi again I said and settled in. She was in tears.

After the stewardess said her perfunctory safety instructions and I finished glancing at the airline magazine, I looked to my right again. I knew I had to say something. Come on, is it really that bad? You’re going to the Riviera. Unless you’re going to be stuck in a windowless hotel room for a business meeting, it will be a good trip.

I’m not so sure it will be a good trip. I’m not sure I’m ready for a good trip. I bought the ticket a few weeks ago thinking this would cheer me up after my boyfriend left me. I thought anticipation for the trip would fix me up. It hasn’t. My boyfriend said I am a nice person but a loser in bed, his words. He dumped me.

I thought for a few moments. I couldn’t think of more to say than I’m sure you are a very nice person. Actually, this was only a guess. You have to think more of yourself. Anyway, I’m thinking, do I have to hear all this?

In addition to everything, I left my purse in the airport lady’s room. I went back. It was no longer there. My passport and boarding pass are in my pocket. But my purse had my credit cards, cash, Blue Cross card and everything else.

Can I call you by your first name? By the way I’m Robert, Robert Flick. I changed the topic to bring her back down. Clearly my new found friend was getting a bit hysterical. But I’m also thinking, is this losing her purse some sort of con game? Looking at it rationally people do lose purses and wallets. Don’t worry, we’ll handle this. Clearly saying this was an impulsive leap. I wondered about how inclusive I meant the words we’ll and this. First thing we do when we get off the flight is call up about your credit cards.

    By the way, I’m Sheila.

    Chapter 2

What do you know about the amazing energy discovery in Israel that was almost hijacked by terrorists? I asked this as I mulled over the name Sheila. This always seemed to be the name of a demure coed. Sheila wasn’t.

Really nothing. What should I know?

This was about the answer I expected. 20-year-old's don’t read newspapers. The intelligence agencies were supposed to keep my story out of the papers. But it did leak out in detail. This made for a long article in the New York Times Magazine. My book, Two Times Lucky, followed
