GURUDEV
A Spiritual Icon
Gurudev was a man who made mountains out of mountains, who thought they were molehills.
He started his life as any kid next door, in Hariana, a village 17 kms from Hoshiyarpur, in Punjab.
One of six children, he was born to a trader and a housewife. Brought up in a humble home, he completed his schooling at DAV school, making a mark as one of the naughty students. Quite mischievous as a young boy, he and his friends plucked radish and carrots from fields and were often chased away. The only unique thing about him at that age was that he lit an earthen oil lamp at a dargah every Thursday and spent hours at a temple near his house.
As he grew up, he got into the habit of disappearing for hours, spending time with holy men, much older than him. He completed many siddhis in order to acquire spiritual energy. After he managed to finish school, which was a surprise and shock to all alike, he sold pens and orange sweets in buses in Delhi. His father went through a financial crisis losing a lot of money in business. This put Gurudev in a tight spot with minimal financial help and support.
To complete his education he had to move to Delhi and live with his paternal aunt. In order to compensate for staying with his relatives he would undertake physical work as his contribution. At times he would carry 20 kg sacks of wheat on his back to the mill to get it ground.
As luck would have it, he got admission in an overseer’s course at the PUSA Agricultural University in Delhi. After graduating, he joined the agricultural ministry and became a soil surveyor.
Till this point, his life followed a normal trajectory. At the age of 35, a spiritual somersault happened; an inner voice asked him to go to Hari ki Pawri, Haridwar and give up all his siddhis in the Ganges river. When he finished doing this, he knew it marked the beginning of his spiritual life, but he did not know how it would happen.
Later he was told by the inner voice, that an Om had formed in his right palm, and he could see it clearly. As time went by, he acquired the symbols of Trishul, Shivling and Gileri, Ganpati, Nandi bull etc. He was asked to start healing people, and he did. Starting with a handful, there came a time when there were 35,000-40,000 people waiting in queue to meet him. The sthans (home temples), a concept that he established to all parts of the country and beyond.
He gave the power to heal to over a 100 people. They all ran these sthans in their homes. These disciples spread their wings further and trained others. This one-man tree became an orchard. In 20 years he and his spiritual family of shishyas had served millions of people! I was lucky to be one of the people he picked, trained and helped evolve. Without him, my life would not have been worth it.
Ordinary people who had very little to write home about spiritualism became giants under his tutelage. They saw themselves as molehills and he saw them as the mountains they would become. They judged themselves in the present, he evaluated them from their past, present and future. They saw themselves as people. In his vision, they were beings. A part of the whole, and a part of him.
I feel I have been blessed with spiritual wealth beyond expectation, maybe beyond justification and certainly, beyond my aspirations.
I feel extreme wealth ought to be shared. I would feel gratified if you would accept some of these realisations and benefit from their practice.
You would be adding to my bliss and I to yours. Let us create this moment of oneness.
Yes, let us!
Regards,

Self Sculpting - Redefining your, persona, attitudes, habits.
Introduction
Through this book, it is my endeavour to present some spiritual concepts, interspersed with relevant incidents experienced by several of my spiritual friends and me. The ultimate purpose is to make you love yourself or fall in love with yourself. Not as Narcissus did but in the more prosaic sense of learning to accept, respect and revere yourself- itself no mean task.
Here, I will briefly digress to talk about the various stages of my own spiritual journey.
The story of my self-evaluation has been a jigsaw puzzle of likes, dislikes, acceptance, non-acceptance, and the rise and fall of self-worth. Being an adopted child, who was acquired with great difficulty from within the family, I was handled with kid gloves. The first half of my school life was spent being mollycoddled. The second half was spent in a boarding school. Since I joined the semester midway, I was a misfit in class, average at a few subjects at best, but bad at most. Naturally, I saw myself as a loser with nothing to be proud of.
College presented an opportunity to show off and get recognition. I dressed up in a way that attracted attention. In fact, I often went overboard and made a spectacle of myself and got away with it. I also won college elections; after all, who would not vote for a jester! And a jester I was! Better a witty fool than a foolish wit,
as Shakespeare rightly said. I honed my debating and acting skills which won me many trophies. Fortunately, I was not too unpopular with the girls either. Maybe, I was better than I thought! Self-evaluation was very confusing, for what was I really evaluating myself on? Social success?
It was during my early college days that I got an attack of rheumatoid arthritis. For years, I had to undergo acupuncture daily. And then, I met Gurudev who cured my rheumatoid arthritis of over 10 years in less than a minute. Eventually, he accepted me as a disciple.
It was time to learn. Actually, to unlearn!
I thought to ‘discover yourself meant understanding yourself psychoanalytically. Actually, it means a lot more. It has been a spiritual journey of 35 years of learning to not dislike myself, and loving myself instead.
Join me on this journey to understand and appreciate one’s self-worth and realise one’s true nature while shedding all scepticisms.
Tat Twam Asi-That You Are
This book de-constructs the phrase in an informal manner. ‘That’ stands for the consciousness supreme, which all human beings are a part of. ‘You’ stands for the body, the spirit, and the jivaatma or individual soul. ‘Are’ means you are a part of the consciousness supreme, even if you do not know it, even if you do not feel it, even if you do not want to believe it. It is both intriguing and astounding! The idea is for you to understand and put the phrase into practice. Highlight the concepts that interest you. After doing a couple of readings, re-read the highlighted texts and see if they work for you.
How to Read This Book
I have structured this book in three parts along with a self-assessment:
Part A- The Nature of Existence covers the ‘why’ and ‘what’ of the concepts relevant to your spiritual evolution. So, in that sense, this section covers the theory of Aatma Sutra.
Part B- Formulas of Evolution covers ‘how’ you can evolve spiritually. These are practical steps that you can take to elevate your spiritual journey.
Part C- Acceptance to Self-Worship takes you to the purpose of this book i.e. to accept, love and eventually worship the divinity within you.
Life Scorecard- This is a self-assessment to see where a normal householder stands on materialistic, intellectual, and spiritual parameters.
While the purpose of this book is to help you experience the concepts and integrate them into your life, you may read this book in any of the following ways:
1. If you are new to spiritualism, then I suggest that you read the book chronologically- Part A first, then move to Parts B and C and finally attempt the Life Score Card self-assessment. This is a good way to understand the concepts in totality, as there are several inter-linkages between them. If you wish to practice and experience first, then you may choose to jump straight into Parts B and C and refer to any concepts in Part A as and when you are curious and wish to take a deeper dive into the theory behind spiritual practices. You may attempt the Life Scorecard at any point you wish to.
2. If you really want to know where you stand spiritually, then you may attempt the Life Scorecard first and then proceed to Parts A, B, and C.
Part A
The Nature of Existence
Connected to all, but attached to none.
CHAPTER I
The Goal
What is the goal of my life?
At some point, you may have asked yourself this question.
But before you address this question, you need to first ask yourself, Who am I?
You could define yourself by your name, age, profession, gender, relationships and so on. But at the existential level, you are a body, with organs, tissues, cells, and a genetic system. Your body makes you unique. That is who you are. Right? Well, yes and no.
Your body as described above, is only your physical body that has been assigned for this lifetime. You lived for many lifetimes before this one and will continue to live for many more. At the time of each birth, you will be assigned a different physical body. The physical body is called the Isthul Sharir. Its goal is to work towards economic, social, and intellectual accomplishments. This is relevant only for your current lifetime.
Besides the physical body, you have a spirit body called the Sukshma Sharir. The spirit body is what has existed before, during, and will continue to exist after this life. Its goal is the attainment of spiritual
