    Why I Wrote This Book

    Attitudes

I’m sure you remember reading about a time, centuries ago, when we thought the Earth was the center of the universe. We believed this so strongly, in fact, that we automatically rejected any differing views, regardless of how convincing the evidence was. The brilliant mathematical physicist Galileo Galilei died under house arrest in the 1 century for daring to present evidence supporting the Copernican theory of a heliocentric planetary system. Why did we cling so tenaciously to Ptolemy’s old geocentric view? For the same reason we cling to so many antiquated views today–fear of attitude adjustment

Discarding or replacing a view always involves an attitude adjustment, whether it’s a minor tweak or a major overhaul. Such adjustments take us out of our attitudinal comfort zones and make us feel insecure until we’ve integrated the new views into our system. In many cases the implications of the changes are far- reaching and entail adjustments in more than one area of life, making us even more uncomfortable and insecure. For example, changing the view that the Earth was the center of the universe not only necessitated an adjustment of our attitudes about the Earth’s relationship to the other known planets, but also about the Earth’s role in God’s overall scheme of things.

The reality of UFOs is a current example of a concept for which overwhelming proof exists, but which many of us stubbornly refuse to accept for fear of the discomforts of attitude change. We instinctively know that changing our views on UFOs will entail potentially painful adjustments in more than one area of life, as did those who resisted the heliocentric view of our solar system. But, as we all know, accepting the heliocentric view has turned out to be much less painful and infinitely more beneficial than originally anticipated, as will accepting the truth about UFOs. Perpetuating a world view without the reality of UFOs is like perpetuating one without the reality of heliocentricity. There’s only so far we can develop using knowledge based on a faulty premise. So, this book is, in part, an attitude check and an invitation to change yours if you haven’t already.

    Questions and Answers

The other reason why I wrote this book involves questions and answers. First, to answer some of those pressing questions about UFOs that you had already posed but had probably presumed were unanswerable. Second, to raise and answer other equally important questions that may not yet have occurred to you, but likely would have sooner or later. For most answers, I will illustrate my points with pertinent reports on UFO sightings. My intention, however, is not to pretend to have all the answers or to foist exhaustive and preemptive answers on you, for to do so would falsely imply that the truth goes no further than this book. Instead, I intend to satisfy your basic hunger for answers, while deepening your interest and stimulating your appetite for more.

Thus, if, by the end of this book, you find that most of your questions about UFOs have been answered, yet you crave more information, then I will have achieved my goal. The list of books in the bibliography would be an excellent aid for continuing your reading on this topic. Now it’s time to begin our adventurous journey together. Before we do, however, just a small word of warning: If you’ve claimed that a lack of answers is the reason why you’ve resisted the acceptance of UFOs as a reality, you may have to find a different excuse after reading this book!

    Chapter I

    The Starting Point

    What Are UFOs?

Suffice it to say at this point that when I use the term unidentified flying object, I am referring to flying objects of extraterrestrial origin of various shapes and sizes that are based on technology vastly superior to our own. Their colors range from very light to very dark shades. Their sizes vary greatly, ranging, in rare cases, from a few inches in diameter to over twice the size of a football field. Normally the range is somewhere in between. Among the dozens of shapes reported, the most frequent are flat and circular or elliptical, like a saucer (hence flying saucer); round, like a ball; oblong, like a cigar; saturn-shaped, like a ball with a horizontal saucer in the middle; and conical (see figures 1 and 2). Some UFOs have even been reported to change their shapes in mid-flight.

Some UFOs are completely silent, while others emit various noises, like roars, booms, whirring, humming, and hissing. Most have no visible discharges as they fly, but some have been reported to emit what seems like fire or vapor from their rear sections. They fly alone and in groups of various sizes. Their flight speed is at times very slow and at times too fast to follow with the naked eye. They exhibit various flight patterns, including hovering, gliding, wobbling, zigzagging in acute-angle turns, rocking like falling leaves, separating from an apparent larger unit into smaller ones and reversing this process by forming a single unit from smaller ones. They are normally seen just occasionally at a given location. But they sometimes appear in waves, which are periods of heightened UFO sightings over an extended region and time frame, lasting from a few weeks to a few years, usually with a perceptible peak in reported activity, or in flaps, which, on average, are shorter, more localized and more eruptive periods.

UFO pilots are mortal beings of advanced intelligence and extraterrestrial origin. They are sometimes referred to as extraterrestrials (ETs), extraterrestrial biological entities (EBEs) and sometimes as simply aliens. Some have reportedly exhibited strong extrasensory abilities. They vary significantly in appearance, meaning that they likely comprise more than one distinct group (see figures 3-7). Although they’re usually described as about four feet tall give or take six inches, they have occasionally been reported as being anywhere from average size to giants. Most are hairless. Their eye color is usually described as very dark, even black. Their skin color is said to vary anywhere from light gray to dark brown. Some have small heads and features, others have lizard-like features, while others have huge heads and large, lidless, wrap-around eyes. So-called grays usually have grayish skin, slits for noses and lips and large black insect-like eyes. Although they vary in the way they dress, they are most often seen in one-piece uniforms that are frequently silver-colored. These descriptions are brief distillations of the thousands of UFO sightings on record (see figures 3-7), and will be used as a foundation to build upon in subsequent parts of the book. During this building process you will see UFOs and their occupants become much more than these initial descriptions.

    My UFO Encounter

What happened to the four of us on that clear starry summer night in1967 sent shock waves throughout that entire region of Pennsylvania and forever changed the way we viewed the universe. We had just finished our junior year of high school and had become friends while attending college prep classes at Lincoln University that July. Being impressed by the campus’s beautiful rural setting and spacious fields, we had discussed the possibility of camping out when weather conditions permitted. So, on the evening of 15 July with flashlights on and sleeping bags under arm, we found a suitable spot in the grassy field about two hundred yards behind the men’s dormitory. Soon after slipping into our sleeping bags, we began chatting about teenage topics, drinking our sodas, and watching various stellar phenomena unfolding above us, like summer constellations showing their mythological shapes, the pale speckled Moon nearing its first quarter, and occasional meteor swarms shooting by.

We expected the night to continue along in the same serene manner until we fell asleep. But it didn’t. About a half hour after we had settled in, the serenity of our night was interrupted by something quite astounding. A group of brightly shining objects suddenly appeared in the middle of the sky. At first they moved along rather slowly, periodically changing formations. At this point we couldn’t make out their structure. All we could see were moving white lights. Then, curiously enough, they stopped in mid-air for a short while and then began moving again. That stop-and-start movement surprised us, but didn’t cause us to suspect anything out of the ordinary. We reasoned that they were helicopters doing some type of maneuvers.

That theory was quickly dismissed, however, because the objects that we thought were helicopters began moving in ways and at speeds that no helicopter or any other known aircraft could. We all bolted to seated positions, gasped involuntary exclamations, and pinned our eyes to the sky as the objects darted and flashed around the sky so quickly that it became hard to follow them with our eyes! They zigzagged in every imaginable direction like supersonic fireflies, sometimes in formation and sometimes out! By this time, they appeared to have come closer to the ground, for when they slowed or momentarily halted, we could now see circular arrangements of lights either underneath them or around their peripheries. They were definitely saucer-shaped objects! Mesmerizing us for another few minutes, the objects suddenly zipped away simultaneously. One moment they were there, the next they were gone!

At first, we were inclined to keep the incident to ourselves for fear of ridicule. But after debating it for several minutes, we decided to take our story to the local newspaper. Early the next morning, before our first class, we nervously entered the door to the newspaper’s staff office, fully aware of the strong possibility that we would be booted out the door as soon as we uttered the word flying saucer. But we had to get it off our chests. Besides, we didn’t intend to give our real names, so if they didn’t believe us, we wouldn’t be identified as the fabricators of a tall tale.

So we told them what had happened. Afterwards, the Executive Editor began asking us a lot of questions about our sighting, but he wasn’t taking any notes. He sounded like he was fishing for holes in our story, so we expected him to order us to leave at any moment. It was this growing pessimism that set us up for a shock almost as startling as the one we had experienced the ght before.

The Editor suddenly grew silent, looked intently at each one of us, drew a deep breath and said, My wife saw them too.

We were stunned speechless, at first not sure if he was serious or just pulling our leg. But it quickly became obvious that he was dead serious. He proceeded to explain that he had asked us all those questions to compare our sighting with his wife’s, and that what we saw matched hers very closely. Her sighting had been in the same general area, but had occurred several weeks earlier. And because there were now corroborating witnesses for her sighting, the newspaper staff agreed to print our story. Our article created such a stir in the region, that it was quickly picked up by three other area papers.

    The Questions

As is usually the case with documented UFO sightings, the newspaper articles on our sighting stirred up a lot of excitement over the possible reality of extraterrestrial visitors and, as expected, raised the same burning questions: What were they really? Where did they come from before they appeared over the campus of Lincoln University? Where did they disappear to after they flew away? Why are they here? These have proven to be the most unanswerable of all the questions posed by UFO witnesses. Unanswerable, that is, until now. After several restless years of searching, grappling, and digging, I finally found the answers. Serendipitously, solutions to other related puzzles followed. Puzzles such as the nature of man’s relationship with extraterrestrials, where these non- human visitors should fit within our spiritual and philosophical systems, and why they may be gods, demons, guardians, or just neighbors. So read on with an open mind and discover not only elusive answers about UFOs, but also an expanded awareness of mankind itself.

    About UFO Sightings

    Real or Hoax?

Many people scoff at the notion that UFOs are real, believing instead that reports of such sightings are mostly hallucinations, hoaxes, or errors. Although, admittedly, such suspicions have proven to be true in the majority of cases, they should not obscure the fact that literally thousands of other sightings are not hoaxes or errors and defy explanation as anything but a UFO. Take mine, for example. Did the five of us (four students and the Editor’s wife) err or hallucinate in an identical manner? We certainly did not conspire to stage a hoax. And what about other even more convincing reports made by well-known and highly credible witnesses? Consider the following three:

An Impeccable Witness: New Hampshire, 1971

It was in the early afternoon under an overcast sky, and Paul and his brother Joseph had just attended the local Memorial Day parade and were on their way to check on some equipment that they had left in an open field on the previous day. Suddenly Joseph slammed on the brakes, causing the truck to skid along the heavily wooded dirt road until it finally came to a halt. For there, floating about three feet off the ground before them was a grayish elliptical object about fifteen feet long described by the two witnesses as shaped like a squashed pear without a neck. The object abruptly rose into the air, and as
