About this ebook

Claude Fister owner and CEO of Mineral Technologies International; receives several calls from a Demarcel Abrahim; the last living descendent of the royal family of Turkey. Demarcel’s after a collection of antiquated journals and stones; that once belonged to his ancestors, that Claude purchased at auction. These journals hold the incantations along with instructions for those who dare to evoke dark spirits. If used correctly and with conviction these spirits manifest certain occurrences for the practitioner. When Demarcel acquires the journals and the stones he performs the incantations. But something goes wrong; he blacks out and wakes up hours later on the marble floor with no recollection of what he’s doing there. He panic’s as he lifts himself up into a sitting position. He reaches over picks up his cane and makes his way out into the atrium. Its dark, the only light is coming in from outside casting shadows. Demarcel looks around not recognizing his surroundings. He calls out. “HELLO!” He waits, no answer, he stands there shaking and confused not knowing what to do next.

    PROLOGUE

The 13th c Grimoire book on Magic

Instructions on how to create magical talismans, amulets and magical spells.

The other worldly powers of the past focused on prayers, meditations, and oral exercises. Which one exclusively, concentrated on spells, potions, and rituals. The oldest writings and those who Read and understood them believed; they’d receive a silver tongue, photographic memory, unimaginable wisdom along with wealth and power when channeled from certain entities. Through the ages, it’s been extremely difficult to evaluate its success and functionality. These original exercises created back then were in three different, styles Greek, Latin, and Hebrew. These ancient texts contained many ideas and notions that were considered ahead of their time. Back then, it was difficult to conclude with any certainty, whether or not such ancient text was real; or had any powers associated with them, to summons or evoke supernatural entities. Considering that in the distant past, literacy was extremely low. It was easy to manipulate people in making them believe something in connection with magical powers or anything associated with it."

    South Africa

At the Mineral Technologies International excavation site; Nico Vos doubles over in pain, coughing. He rushes out of the tent, his nausea results in a bloody puddle of vomit. Lance follows Nico outside and watches as he blacks out then collapses. Lance yells.

Nico. He waves over to Arthur the on-site manager and shouts.

CAN WE GET SOME HELP OVER HERE! Arthur runs to Nico’s side next to Lance.

Nico can you hear me? Arthur dials for the onsite medics.

Lance what the hell is wrong with him?

"I don’t know. He mentioned he was experiencing stomach pains after lunch.

He thought it was just something he ate. You know how eating from these food trucks can be." Arthur raises his voice.

THIS IS MUCH MORE THAN FOOD POISONING. We’ll know more once we get him to the hospital. Go check with the food trucks. See, if there’s been any other complaints.

The medics arrive and transport Nico to the site’s medical facility; to be treated until the helicopter arrives; to fly Nico to the nearest hospital. All MTI excavation sites have a medical facility fully equipped, with state-of-the-art medical equipment and licensed medical personnel. However, all they can do is sedate Nico and keep him as comfortable as possible until the transport arrives.

They administer smelling salts, consisting of ammonia with a menthol base. Nico coughs as they remove his blood-stained shirt as he continues to moan in pain. The medical transport arrives and flies Nico to the hospital where many tests are performed. The doctors can’t locate what the cause is, of Nico’s internal bleeding. So, Arthur arranges for Nico’s transportation back to Germany, so he can be seen by specialists. A couple of days later; Arthur’s waiting at the hospital in Germany. He dials Claude Fister, the CEO and founder of Mineral Technologies International.

    Canada

    Arthur, how’s everything going?

Claude, I have some bad, news. It’s Nico; he became violently sick on the job site. He began vomiting up blood then collapsed. Doctors in Africa couldn’t find the cause of the internal bleeding. So, I arranged to have Nico flown back here to Germany to see specialists.

How’s he doing? Claude asked in a concerned tone.

    Stable for now.

    Has Lida been notified?

"Yes. I called Hilda, Nico’s housekeeper. I thought it would be better coming from

    her."

Good thinking. Keep me updated on his recovery.

    New Mexico

Halfway around the world, at the MTI offices in New Mexico in the United States; Lida Vos looks down at her cell phone. It’s Hilda, her housekeeper calling from Germany.

    Hilda, what a pleasant surprise.

Lida dear. She says in a soft German accent.

I’m sorry to have to tell you this; it’s about your father. He’s been brought to the hospital here and it doesn’t look good. Lida raises her voice concerned.

    What happened?

He became sick in Africa and began vomiting up blood. Arthur called and told me the doctors in Africa couldn’t find the cause of the internal bleeding. So, Arthur had him immediately brought back to Germany, to see specialists. Lida’s quiet.

Arthur arranged for an MTI jet to fly you out tonight.

Good! I’ll meet you at the hospital first thing in the morning. Thank you. Lida hangs up and anxiously dials her assistant. Sara Bowes.

    Hi Sara.

Lida, what’s wrong? You sound upset.

Sara, I have to fly to Germany, my father’s in the hospital.

    I’m sorry to hear that.

I need you to finish up what I’ve been working on.

Ok, I’ll have Greta take over what I’m doing.

I’ll call in a couple of days.

Tell Nico, I hope he gets well soon.

    Thanks, Sara.

Lida left the office early to go home and pack. She’s worried, her mind is racing. She can’t stand the thought of her father being in the hospital. Later, that evening on the flight back to Germany; all Lida thought about is her father and how they hardly see each other, because of their work schedules. Lida thinks back when her father told her all about starting with Mineral Technologies International.

When I was just a young man I worked in the coal mines. It was during this time a friend I worked with introduced me to your mother. It was love at first sight. I decided right then and there. She was the woman I was going to marry.

Lida thought about what her mother told her.

It was your father that named you Lida. It was Latin for Sparkle. He used to say; he loved the way your blue eyes sparkled like sapphires, when you were a baby.

Lida smiled as she remembered their home growing up.

It was like a treasure trove, her father filled with it all kinds of gem-bearing rocks; he collected from job sites, all over the world . He loved the Mosaic design. So, he designed a custom floor in their entry way of their home with assorted colors of agate quartz tiles. Called Terrazzo. He told everyone it was his masterpiece.

Lida wipes her tears, then closes her eyes. She tries to sleep on long flight home.

    Canada

Claude finished with his plans for his Caribbean trip. He thought about how Nico and Lida would be perfect for this project.

It would be good for them to spend some quality time together. It will be good for me also, we all need a well-deserved vacation. My brother Ivan always dreamt of expanding the company to the Islands he loved it down there. The last time we were there we went deep sea fishing. A few weeks later Ivan passed away. I was fortunate we had that time together.

Claude thought about how he never went back because of the memories of Ivan. Claude felt good about the idea now. Bringing his brothers dream into fruition. He decides not to take the trip to Germany to visit Nico, since he recovered so quickly.

I’ll just go ahead and arrange for them to meet up in Miami at the Yacht. I’ll give Nico a call in a day or two. I’ll tell him when he’s feeling up to it. If he and Lida would like to join me. It will be good to do some fishing in the Grand Cayman. It’s been a long time since I took a real vacation. Where I did absolutely nothing, no phones or faxes.

    Claude laughs to himself.

    Ha, wishful thinking.

Claude has his itinerary laid out for the entire time he’s down there.

Meeting with realtors, viewing buildings, scheduling shipments, hiring help. Contacting businesses on the other islands, setting up meetings. Putting together gemstones and jewelry design samples. Also inventories of what retailers might need. Then schedule free time to enjoy the islands. Right! There’s a slim chance of that happening; although it will be nice, just to be on the islands.

Claude thought about the trip he and his brother took and the building he bought in Haiti.

It was something Ivan talked about all the time; Ivan always had a strong interest in other cultures, the people, and the cuisines. He also, loved the history especially the pirate stories. He was obsessed with pirates as a young boy growing up. Ivans idea to start a company in Haiti excited him. Now I can finally make Ivans vision a reality. I just wish he could be here to see it.

Claude loved his big brother and thinks about him every day.

Ivan was the brains behind MTI. Since his death, I was determined to pursue my brothers dream and the continuation of MTI’s success.

    Hospital

Early the following morning, Lida arrived at the hospital; she rushes over to Hilda in the waiting room and hugs her.

Lida dear, your father is doing much better since I last spoke to you. When I arrived Arthur and Lance were with him; Arthur explained what had happened to me. Then the nurse came in and asked us to leave. Immediate family only, she told us. Arthur had to go. Lance’s getting coffee, he said he’ll be right back. The nurse mentioned the doctor wants to speak to you, as soon as you arrived.

Good, wait here. I’ll be back, and we‘ll go see him together. Lida goes to the nurses station.

Hi, I’m looking for my father, Nico Vos.

Yes, his room is the second door on the right.. The nurse points. Lida heads back to the waiting room to get Hilda. When they enter Nico’s room, Lida gasps at her father lying there, heavily sedated. She looks around, the entire rooms filled with flowers and cards. She smiles.

Hilda, where did all these come from?

Arthur sent out an email of Nico’s condition. Lida chuckles.

We can open up a flower shop with all these flowers. Hilda smiled and replies.

    True!

Lida tries to be humorous and lighten the mood. As she holds her father’s hand. She noticed he lost weight; and is saddened by all the tubes and machines he’s hooked up to. The doctor comes in behind her.

Ms. Vos? Lida wipes her tears and turns to the doctor.

    Yes.

    Can we speak outside?

    Yes. Lida turns to Hilda.

    Hilda, I’ll be right back.

Ms. Vos, your father’s condition is stable. I’ve sedated him to ease the pain. Lida sniffles and wipes her nose with a tissue.

Do you have any idea what’s causing this? He hesitates.

We do have the bleeding under control. We haven’t located the cause yet.

So, what do you think it could be? Lida becomes impatient.

Any ideas? The doctor pauses, Lida notices his uncertainty.

No, I’m waiting on the rest of the test results. I’ll know more later. I’ll give you both a couple more minutes; he needs rest. Come back later this afternoon during visitors hours. He should be well rested by then.

    Thank you, doctor.

As Lida slowly walks back into the room, she’s in deep thought with what the doctor told her. Swiftly, Lance walks up behind her.

Lida! She flinches, startled. Lance gives her a big smile. She glares at him, not in the mood. Lida goes to her father’s side and holds his hand. Nico’s awake and groggy. He smiles at his daughter. Lance pats him on the leg.

Hey! Buddy, good to see you. Lance walks over and hugs Hilda. Lida’s annoyed, in a sarcastic tone.

Lance, can you give us a moment, please! Lance’s caught off guard, not expecting this. He turns and gives her a smile.

Sure, I have some calls to make anyway.

Nico I’ll be by in the morning. Nico gives him a weak wave. He walks over to Lida. He puts his hand on her shoulder and kisses her on the cheek and whispers.

Let’s have dinner tomorrow night and catch up. She looks into his eyes and nod’s.

    Okay! Sure!

Great! I’ll pick you up around seven. As Lance leaves the hospital, he dials Istanbul.

    Istanbul Turkey

On an excavation site in Istanbul Turkey. Before the excavation in Africa. Nico Vos and his crew were having dinner at their hotel. When a well, dressed man approached them introducing himself as Demarcel Abrahim. He was a tall man, hoovering over six feet. With dark olive skin, and silver, white hair, straight to his shoulders and dark blue eyes. In his heavy Arabic accent. He interrupts them.

Excuse me, for interrupting your dinner. I was wondering if I can have a moment of your time? Nico stands and put’s out his hand and offers him a chair.

I’m Nico, here, have a seat.

What can we do for you, Mr. Abrahim? Nico had an idea it, was pertaining to the excavation.

I’m here to personally thank you, with your success on the excavation at the mine. It’s been dormant for many years now. Everyone was convinced it was exhausted. So, when I happen to read an article about your company and its technology. I thought it was worth a try.

I apologize, Mr. Abrahim legally, we’re not to discuss anything regarding the excavations.

Yes, of course, I know this. I just wanted to invite you all to my home, for a nice dinner. Nothing fancy, casual attire. You see, my family once owned the land the mine is on. After they passed, the government took over the mine and the land it sits on. I still own all the property around it. Over five thousand acres.

Oh, we pass your property every day on the way to the mine.

Well, I would like to express my hospitality, as a thank you. It would be my pleasure to have you and your men to my home for a nice dinner. Nico thought Demarcel seemed very, cordial.

Yes, okay, we would like that, thank you! Arthur agreed.

    That sounds nice. Thank you.

Good. I will tell you all about the history of my country and my ancestors who once ruled. Nico stands, then Demarcel stands and hands Nico his business card.

Please call and let me know when and how many will be attending; so, I can have my chef prepare accordingly.

    Sure, of course. Nico responded.

    I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

Thank you, again, Mr. Abrahim we’ll be in touch. Nico shakes his hand and Demarcel excuses himself and exits the restaurant. Nico sits.

That was kind of him. Lance comments.

C’mon! What does this guy want from us. Lance grabs the card out of Nico’s hand, and stares at it.

He’s just, proud of his culture, Lance.. Arthur jumps in.

Lance’s, right Nico, you heard him. He personally requested our company for this job. It sounds suspicious.

    I agree with Arthur.

Listen, guy’s relax. We’ll have security with us, he won’t know who they are. Arthur looks at Nico as they finish their dinner.

Are you sure about this Nico? Nico continued eating, then looked at him.

Yes Arthur, I’m sure, it’ll be fine. We deserve a nice dinner out.

    Ivan Fister

Mineral Technologies International, was, founded by Claude Fister’s older brother Ivan. When Ivan was growing up their father worked in the coal mines and their mother was a homemaker. At an early age, Ivan occupied his time collecting rocks, he was fascinated by them. When he got older he decided he wanted to work in the mines like his father. But not for coal, but for gemstones.

One afternoon after school. Ivan was playing with his friends by the river, near his house. When something caught his attention. It was a couple of rocks half buried in the mud with faint swirls of color running through them. He never seen anything like it before. He picked them up and rinsed them off in the river. Then told his friends he had to go. Ivan knew of a shop near his house that had jewelry in the window. So, Ivan thought he would go there; to see if anyone knew what kind of rocks he found. Ivan enters the small shop looking around, distracted by all the beautiful things on the shelves. Ivan didn’t notice the tall, burly red bearded man, behind the counter. In a deep rugged voice Ivan hears.

Hello! May I help you, young man? Ivan turned and smiles.

Yes sir. Ivan walks up to the large man and introduces himself.

Hi, I’m Ivan Fister. I live down the street. I always wanted to come in your store and look around. The man smiles down at him.

Welcome, Ivan, I’m Raymond Wiertz, I’m the owner. Is there anything I can do for you today, Ivan?

Yes sir, there is. Ivan pulls the rocks out from his pocket. The shop owner looks down at the small boy and smiles.

Let’s see, what you have there. Mr. Wiertz pulls over a dark red velvet pad and Ivan place’s the rocks down gently.

I found these rocks by the river, and I wondered if you knew what kind of rocks these were. I never seen any like these before. Mr. Wiertz picks up the first rock. It’s about a half inch in circumference. He turns it over, and he sees, faint swirls of white and blue. Along with a slight shimmering of crystal running through it. A surprised expression comes over his face.

Ivan, it looks like you may have found some Achates. Ivan got excited he couldn’t believe it. Mr. Wiertz knew what kind of rocks they were. Ivan listens intently as the shop owner continued.

The name comes from a river in Italy; in Sicily actually, these stones today are known as Agates.

Wow, you really know your rocks. Mr. Wiertz, laughs.

Ivan these aren’t your everyday rocks. These are what’s called, semi-precious stones. They’re actually worth money.

    Really! Ivan’s face lights up.

Yes, these are quite nice actually, they’re quite a find. Would like to sell them? Ivan smiles with excitement. He looks down at the stones; then picks them up, and slightly, shakes his head no. He looks up at Mr. Wiertz.

No, I would like to show them to my mother and father first. Mr. Wiertz smiles.

Of course, when you decide just let me know.

Thanks! Mr. Wiertz! Ivan left the store bursting with excitement. He couldn’t wait to show his mother the stones and tell her, they’re worth money. Ivan gets home and storms into the kitchen.

    Mom, Mom!

Yes, Ivan slow down. I’m right here! What is it? Ivan anxiously, struggles to get the stones out of his pocket to show her. She looks down, all his mother see’s is a couple of rocks in his dirty hands.

Those are very, nice dear. Now get washed up for dinner. Ivan’s talks fast.

The man in the shop down the street, said they’re real stone’s and are worth money. I can’t wait to tell dad. They aren’t like ordinary rocks he said, and he wanted to buy them from me. I told him I didn’t want to sell them, because they’re the first real stones I found. Mr.Wiertz told me that there might be more, like these by the riverbank. His mother stopped what she was doing and looks down; at his messy ash blonde hair and his dirty face, making the blue of his eyes pop. She raises her voice.

What did you say? Ivan knew he was in trouble now. He was, forbidden to go down to the river. His mother begins to yell.

WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT GOING DOWN TO THE RIVER!

It’s okay, mom, I was with my friends. We weren’t near the water or anything.

No! It’s not okay! You’re not to go down to the river again. You understand me! Ivan’s excitement vanishes; he turns and stomps his feet as he goes to his room and slams the door.

    Germany

After an enormous lunch. Hilda draws Lida a bath with her favorite geranium and lavender bath salts. To help sooth her nerves and relax. Afterwards, Hilda, did the same for herself. Lida enjoyed a second glass of wine while soaking, thinking how good it felt to be home. Lida becomes drowsy, she gets out, and heads into her bedroom. She smiles, as she looks at the collection of crystals, in different shapes and colors; along with the geodes her father gave her over the years. Agate was abundant in Germany. Lida got her passion for gemstones from her father at an early age; she dreamed of becoming a gemologist and work alongside of her father one day.

When Lida got the position at Mineral Technologies International after college.

It was there she met Lance Kaiden. Her first true love. Lance was nothing like the guys she dated in college, he had a way of making her feel special. Lance was much older, smart and extremely good looking. He was six foot tall, with blond hair and light blue eyes. He was naturally charming and never had to work hard for Lida’s affection. She remembered how women automatically flocked to him. Lida had mixed feelings about seeing him again.

It was weird seeing Lance after all these years.

Lida loved him deep down. But would never forgive him for choosing his career over their wedding. Lida was exhausted, her eyes became heavy and she fell fast asleep thinking about Lance. A short while later Hilda checks in on her and stands there, watching her sleep; it was good to have her home. She missed Lida, even though they spoke frequently on the phone. It just wasn’t the same as having her there.

She covers Lida with the extra blanket at the end of the bed and shuts the light. Then goes to her room to take a nap herself. She lays there, not able to sleep worrying about her boss. She was upset that Nico was in the hospital in pain. She was praying he would get better and come home tomorrow. Hilda decides she’ll bring him a fresh set of clothes, just in case. Hours later, Lida’s alarm goes off and she wakes to the smell of coffee. She grabs her robe and heads downstairs.

    Hi Hilda.

Did you have a good nap dear?

Yes, I feel much better now. I didn’t realize how exhausted I was.

    Jet lag. Hilda replied.

Yeah, I’m going to get dressed, and we’ll leave in an hour.

Here. Hilda hands her a cup of coffee .

    Thanks.

Later they arrive to the hospital; when they get to Nico’s room, he’s awake speaking to the nurse. Lida smiles and rushes over and hugs her father tight.

It’s so good to see you. How are you feeling?

    I’m feeling much better now.

Dad, who authorized Lance and Arthur to visit you?

Relax! I was awake, I told the nurse it was okay.

So, has the doctor been in to see you? Do they have any idea what caused this?

Yes, the doctor was in. He said nothing is showing up on the x-rays. But the medication he gave me for the pain is working tremendously.

He did say, since the internal bleeding has let up, I can go home today. He said there’s nothing more they can do for me here.

So, dad, are you going to tell me, what actually happened out there?

I honestly don’t know; all I remember is, I began having sharp pains; and when I woke up I was here. I have no memory of anything else beforehand. Lance and I had lunch that day and soon after, I began having sharp stomach pains. That’s all I remember.

So, no one else got sick at the site?

No, Lance asked around, including the food trucks. There were no other incidences Arthur told me.

I’m sorry daddy, this sounds awfully, suspicious. Why did you get sick and no one else.

I don’t know dear. Nico turns and looks up at Hilda, he squeezes her hand.

It’s nice to see you, Hilda.

    You too, sir.

So, dad, did you have any problems before lunch?

Like I said, I began having pains after, I had lunch. Nico stares out the window in deep thought.

    Dad, what is it?

Now, that I think about it, earlier this morning. Lance was outside my room before Arthur arrived. He asked the nurse if I was going to make it. I didn’t pay much attention; I just woke up and was groggy. Why would he think I wasn’t going to pull through.

    He was concerned.

    Maybe.

Well, if there’s anything going on here Dad, I will find out.

Lida, I would really love to get out of here and into my own bed. Can you take care of my discharge? I really would like to go home.

Of course, I’ll be right back. Hilda, please stay with him.

Absolutely. Hilda reaches for her bag.

Sir, I brought a change of clothes for you. Just in case you were discharged.

    Thanks Hilda.

Sir, do you believe Lance might’ve had something to do with this?

I really don’t know Hilda. I hope not, it’s hard to believe. Lance’s like family.

I know, Lance has always been respectful. Nico puts his head back and closes his eyes. After a few minutes, he opens his eyes looks over at Hilda and smiles.

Thank you! Hilda, for being here.

It’s my pleasure sir, I’m just relieved you’re feeling better. You know how much I care about the both of you.

We feel the same about you. I don’t know, how I would have managed without you all these years. Hilda looked at Nico and smiles. Deep down she’s concerned that Lance might’ve had something to do with his sickness.

Do you believe Lance could do this to you?

Honestly, Hilda, I don’t know. Looking, back we all were very, busy. If anyone wanted to hurt me, I would be oblivious to it. I never paid attention to my surroundings. All I know is I’ve worked with Lance and these men for years. I trust them, I have no reason not to.

    Ivan Fister

While having dinner that evening. Ivan couldn’t tell his father about the stones. Ivan knows he’s in trouble for going down to the river. His mother didn’t bring it up either. Ivan wasn’t going to listen, he decided to go down to the river every day after school anyway. He didn’t care if he was punished, it was worth it. So, when Ivan went to the river, to look for more stone’s. He had no luck. He walked up and down the bank as far as he could. He went just far enough to make it home at a reasonable time, so his mother wouldn’t worry.

A couple of weeks went by when Ivan finally stumbled upon a couple more stones; he almost overlooked them buried in the mud. They were even larger than the first stones he found. Ivan became excited he couldn’t wait to show Mr.Wiertz what he found. So, he ran all the way, he needed to get there before he closed. Mr. Wiertz was looking out his window when he saw Ivan running to his shop. He goes over and opens the door to let him in. He looked at Ivan with concern. Ivan didn’t look well, he was very, pale and breathing heavily with Sweat was pouring down his temples.

Ivan, please come in, have a seat. As Ivan sits at the counter, Mr.Wiertz hurried to the back room and comes back with a tall glass of water with ice. Ivan, breathing heavily struggles to explain.

I rushed over. He pauses and catches his breath.

I had to see you before you closed, I found more stones. He pulls them out of his pocket.

They’re even bigger and have more color than the first stones I found. Ivan hands them to him as Mr.Wiertz hands Ivan the glass of ice water.

Yes, you’re right! These are nicer than the first stones you showed me.

I thought so too. Ivan quickly drinks down the water finishing it.

Ah, that was good, nice and cold. He wipes his mouth with his sleeve. Mr. Wiertz looks at Ivan and smiles.

Ivan would you be interested in selling these stones?

Yes! I would. Ivan replied with excitement.

Good! I also told a friend of mine about the stones, he’s also a jeweler. He also, might be interested in buying some stones. If you should find some more.

Sure. Mr. Wiertz watched Ivan, thinking to himself he didn’t look well. He gets the money and pays Ivan for the stones. Ivan couldn’t believe it. He looked down at all the bills counting them.

This is the most money I ever held. Mr. Wiertz laughed.

These stones will make nice jewelry. When I finish with them I’ll put them in the window for everyone to see and tell everyone; you were the one who sold me the stones.

    Wow!

Are you really going to make jewelry out of them?

    Yes.

    That’s so cool! I can’t wait.

Demarcel looks down at his cell phone. The area code is from Germany. He answers in English.

    Is it done?

No. Replied the voice on the other end."

The medics got to him immediately. He was, flown directly to the hospital. He survived. In an angry tone.

You’re telling me Nico Vos is still alive?

Did you follow my instructions? Lance hesitated.

Yes, just like you told me. Lance lied. He didn’t give Nico the full dosage that was in the vial, like he instructed. He only gave him half of the white substance.

Maybe it’s taking longer than expected. Demarcel doesn’t reply.

What was it, I gave him anyway? Again, Demarcel doesn’t answer.

Well, whatever it was, had him vomiting up blood shortly after. In a sharp tone.

Stay with the Vos’s! They’re the only chance to get back my merchandise. The phone goes silent. Lance heads back to his hotel. Demarcel was furious. He had his doubts. Lance would pull this off, he was too close to Claude Fister and the Vos’s. It was obvious he didn’t give Nico Vos the full dosage in the vial or Nico would be dead. Demarcel dials one of his employees Tahar.

Mr. Abrahim. Tahar answers in Arabic.

I have a job for you. You’ll need to hire someone to assist you.

Yes sir. What’s the job? The line goes dead. Demarcel continued reading the journals left to him by his grandmother after she passed.

The use of the amulets are considered key for those who dared to bring forth the dark spirits.

Actually! Lance’s been acting preoccupied lately, with something or someone. He’s been withdrawn, not like his outgoing self we all know. I did ask him, if there was anything wrong or going on that he might want to talk about. He said no everything was fine. That he was just, tired. I took it at face value because of the conditions we were working under; with the distance we traveled everyday back and forth from the hotel to the mine. We all were, pretty strung out, so, I didn’t press it any further. I’ve known, Lance for many years. There was something he definitely wasn’t telling me, and I knew it. Lida walks back into the room, she smiles.

What is it dad, that you know?

I was referring to Lance. I was just telling Hilda, how Lance had been acting strange over the last few weeks. I didn’t pay much attention, but now that I think back. He hasn’t been himself. Lida just stared at her father with a blank look on her face.

We’ll talk about this later. Let’s get you home. Lida forces a smile.

    Yes, please!

I’ll make a nice big dinner with all your favorites, Mr. Vos. Nico laughs.

Not so fast! I don’t think I’m going to be eating what I want quite yet, Hilda. Thank you, though. You know how much I love your cooking and I can tell you this; I can’t wait to be able to eat what I want. I’ve been eating out for so long now; I forgot what one of your home cooked meals tastes like. I’m sure the doctor will have me on some kind of restricted diet. I’m going to change, now so we can get out of here. Lida laughs.

Not so fast Dad! We have to wait for the nurse, you can’t just rush out. You have to ride in a wheelchair.

    I don’t need a wheelchair. I can walk fine.

    It’s hospital rules.

We have to wait for the nurse anyway, she’s bringing your prescriptions. Nico waves his hand in the air, as he gets up to change.

Okay, okay! Lida looks at Hilda, smiles and rolls her eyes.

He’s fine! Hilda shakes her head yes and smiles.

    Yes, he is.

Demarcel continues reading the journals. They were all handwritten over the years in different languages, about the ancient treatises. Demarcel was looking for specific gemstones with a specific engraving that held specific powers.

The book of spiritual treatises was composed in the 13th century. Its information is about the influences of the Greek, Hebrew, and Roman traditions, held by practitioners during that time.

Demarcel Read the handwritten copies written by Misir Casis senior. A seer and advisor to Demarcel’s family. He was pleased to learn about a certain stone his grandfather worked with. This specific stone with the engraving of the bat; that has powers over those spirits who are channeled. Demarcel now realizes when using certain stones with conviction; they contributed to these powerful spirits responsible for certain happenings when conjured.

Demarcel was astonished by what he was reading. At the same time. He had no idea what he was getting himself into. All he knew was, what his grandfather repeatedly told him. When he was a young boy. That he would one day take over for him when he was gone. Not realizing what they were actually doing all those years ago, in those secret meetings.

He heard stories growing up, about his grandfather and these meetings. It was rumored what they practiced was evil. But he never believed it. He was too young to understand. Demarcel becomes angry. Now that he knows what the stones are, used for, he needed to get the rest of the journals; containing the incantations and instructions on how to use the stones. Back from Claude Fister along with the stones themselves. Demarcel rethinks his plans for Lance.

It wasn’t such a good idea to hire Lance for this job.

Demarcel picks up his phone and dials his employee, Tahar and orders him to come right over.

Home from the hospital, Nico goes and sits in front of the fireplace, in his favorite chair after dinner. Lida and Hilda join him.

Dad, what happened that day in Africa, before you became sick.

Lida, like I said before. I don’t remember anything. Arthur and Lance told me when I woke up here in the hospital. That when I began having the severe stomach pains, I ran out of the tent and began vomiting up blood then passed out. Nico stares into the fire. Then he looks down into his cup of tea. He looks over at his daughter and sees how worried she was.

I honestly, believe now. Lance might’ve had something to do with this.

    What! Why dad?

Remember the job we did in Turkey?

Yes, you sent me that beautiful scarf and exotic spices.

    It’s called a Pashmina.

    What?

The scarf. That’s what it’s called because of its fine cashmere.

Oh, all right! Pashmina. Now tell me, what happened. What does Turkey have to do with, any of this.

"After we completed the job that day, we were having dinner at our hotel. A well-dressed, gentleman approached us and introduced himself as Mr. Demarcel Abrahim. He was very, polite and apologized for interrupting our dinner. He asked if he could have a few moments of our time. I said okay, he seemed polite enough so, I offered him a seat. Then he went on to tell us that he was the last living descendant of the Royal family, who once ruled Turkey. That the mine and the land it’s on was, once owned by his family. He went on telling us, the government took it over after his grandparents passed away.

He continued to explain, the estate we passed by every day on the way to the mine was his home. He said he was the one who recommended MTI for the excavation. That it been shut down for decades, it was believed to be exhausted, and he thought to reopen it. He had come across an article about MTI with its advanced technology. Being on the board of the directors for the mine he thought it was a good idea to give us a try. So, when we finished, he heard from his source’s, that we came up with an exorbitant amount of gem rough. He wanted to invite us to his home for dinner. As a way of saying thank you. I said all right. I thought that would be nice."

Dad we‘re prohibited to engage socially with the locals on job sites.

Yes, of course, I know but, he seemed polite enough. I didn’t see any harm in having a nice meal with a member of the Royal family.

He gave me his card and told us to give him a call. To let him know when and how many so he could have his chef prepare accordingly.

So, dad what does any of this have to do with you.

Wait I’m getting to that. Hilda looked over at Lida, not saying a word.

"He thanked us for our time and left. Arthur and Lance thought it seemed suspicious. I told them he was just proud of his culture. I didn’t see anything wrong with it. I thought the guys could use a night out, I know I did. Anyhow, to make a long story short. The job was, finished, we had our security team with us Demarcel had no idea who they were. He just assumed they were part of the crew.

We arrived to, his home which was a decent size mansion. He was the perfect gentleman. He gave us a tour of the first level. It was magnificent, it was like a museum. Portraits all over the walls dating back at least a hundred years of all his ancestors in their military regalia. He went on to tell us all about the rest of the Royal family. It was lovely, we dined on fine, china, drank out of expensive crystal.

Then after dessert while in the sitting room, he comes out with the real reason he invited us there. It was in regard to a collection of journals containing the history of his ancestors. That’s part of a larger collection and it included a parcel of gemstones; that has been in his family going back generations. It seems, Claude purchased them at an auction in London. He went on telling us, how he spent his adult life searching for these items; and when he was two his mother died and he was given up by his father to his grandparents.

His father was from the south of France and wasn’t capable of bringing up a baby on his own. That his parents were up there in age and wasn’t able to care of a newborn. So, he made the decision to give Demarcel up to his wife’s parents to raise him. He was, to continue on with the obligations of the reign. He was close to his grandmother he loved her very much. This is why these journals and stones are so important to him. Some of these journals were handwritten by his grandmother and are an autobiography of the Royal family’s history."

Wow, I can understand why he wants them. I would too. Lida comments.

There’s more, Demarcel was very sincere. He had a presence about him, he was gracious, we all liked him. So, when he found that Claude purchased them. He called Claude leaving messages. Even offering to pay him double of what he paid at auction.

What? Lida, looked back at Hilda.

Yes. Claude never answered any of his calls or returned them. So, Demarcel decided to go about it another way and try to get his property back by other means."

    Alright, dad! What happened?

Demarcel went on to tell us; the reason he brought us there was to offer anyone one million in U.S dollars to help him retrieve the stones and journals from Claude.

    Wow, Hilda comments.

We need something stronger than tea; She gets up.

    Make that two! Hilda.

Dad! You shouldn’t be drinking alcohol.

Oh, just a small one, my stomach feels fine. Hilda returns with a bottle of brandy, and three glasses. She starts pouring.

    So, what happened next, dad?

Of course, none of us was interested. I stood and shook his hand. We all thanked him for a wonderful evening. He was very polite and walked us to the door. While we all were leaving. Lance said he was going to stay and have another drink. That he would catch up with us later at the hotel.

Wait, so what you’re saying dad is, Lance took him up on his offer?

    I don’t know for sure.

Dad, what would be Demarcel’s motive? Oh, God, a threat. Sending, Claude a message, by killing one of his employees. Dad did you ask Lance about what they talked about.

Yes, Lance said, he was fascinated by him. He enjoyed getting to know a member of the Royal family, that was it. I don’t know what Lance and Demarcel discussed after we left. But, I can say this much, the sound of one million would be enough incentive.

"Maybe dad, this is why he has been acting strange. You said he was preoccupied by something or someone. Maybe this is why he’s acting this way. He’s stressed by the fact
