    Chapter 1

Nathan let out a little sigh as a chime interrupted the soft sound of chirping crickets. Babbage lifted his head and looked up at Nathan as he awakened. A campfire crackled nearby as the trees gently rustled in the breeze. He stared at a clear new moon sky with it’s twinkling stars.

Nathan, I trust you had a good rest period. How do you feel this morning? Ada asked.

I feel fine Ada. Please turn off the video program, Nathan replied as Babbage carefully jumped down from his lap. The room brightened as the walls and ceiling turned white.

You should not consume alcohol. You know it is harmful to your body.

Ada, it was my 60th birthday. I felt like having some of my special potato vodka to celebrate. I only drink it once in awhile.

I do not understand the fixation on a human’s date of birth. It also does not make sense to addle yourself with a toxin like alcohol.

I do not think you will ever understand. Please brew me a strong pot of coffee, Nathan said as he got up from his plush easy chair and headed to the cafeteria. He had spent last night sleeping in the comfortable chair in the recreation lounge after his evening celebration.

I had the auto chef brew your coffee before I woke you. What would you like for breakfast?

You know I would like some nice bacon and eggs, but as we are out of that you can have the auto chef prepare some hot oatmeal, Nathan said as he entered the cafeteria and opened the cooler. He grabbed some fresh raspberries and a nice cantaloupe. After adding the raspberries to the oatmeal and cutting the cantaloupe he asked Ada to prepare a dish of dog food for Babbage.

I’m sorry Babbage, we ran out of meat modules a month ago. You will have to wait for the Boole to bring our supplies. We only have the dried dog food for now.

Babbage was a miniature apricot poodle that would weigh fifteen pounds on earth, but here on Sedna he only weighed ¾ of a pound. He was eleven years old and was born on earth’s moon where Nathan picked him out. He was a lively little dog and Nathan saw he would be the perfect companion for his new assignment on Sedna. Nathan had been the chief engineer for the Stellar Armada Consortium at the Luna Armada Station at the time. After the launch of the last Armada of Star Kites sent to the Alpha Centauri system he signed up as the keeper for the new Sedna Station. The Planetary Science Society had built Sedna Station back in 2074 and when they finished their research it was transferred to SAC. SAC moved a Phased Array Laser Emitter and an additional Fusion Reactor to the station. The plan was to boost a new Star Kite series after the Luna Station launched them. The first Kites sent to the Alpha Centauri system were two meter circular sails with a small radio, a sensor and a power package. They were boosted to 20% of the speed of light by the Luna PALE. The new Kites were larger hexagon sails with a bigger radio and power package. The cameras and sensors were the same size, but the radios and Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator were larger for the longer missions. The RTG was old school technology, but it was still a viable solution. The Sedna PALE would boost the passing Kites up to 40% of the speed of light.

After they ate breakfast Nathan and Babbage moved to the operations center. The wall screen displayed a barren brown and slightly red tinted landscape. The Milky Way spilled across a black sky that was speckled with stars. Nathan took a minute to view the morning sun rise as a small bright star rose above the horizon. It was beautiful in an eerie sort of way. The screen displayed an outside temperature of twelve kelvin, about 261 degrees below zero Celsius.
