Horrors In Time - Tiffany Vega

To my children for never making me feel like my dreams were too far to reach. And for listening to me rant about my book repeatedly. Each one of you helped me bring this book to life and made my dream come true. I love you to the moon and back. To my grandma thank you for allowing me to live in your home where I was able to explore my talents. Without you I don’t know where I would be.

    Part One

    Chapter

    Chapter 1

    Snatcher

ou do it Billy!" a boy in a baseball hat told the young boy. He held a knife out to the boy. It trembled in his hand.

There were three boys standing in a farm yard with a baby pig at their feet. The young pig shook in fear in the middle of the three boys.

I don't... I don't want to. He dropped the knife to the ground. Tears !lled the young boy’s eyes. His face turned red. He held back a cry.

I told you he was too much of a crybaby to do it. What, are you really scared that the Snatcher is going to get you? the older boy teased him. His vile smirk came across his face.

The three boys all looked at each other. The youngest one,Billy, started to cry.

What are you going to do? Run home and tell Mom? the kid with the baseball hat yelled at Billy. He bent down and

grabbed the knife o! the ground. He pushed it to the other kid, the one with the longer hair. Here, Gary, you do it.

I don't want to do it. I don't think that I have the stomach to kill the pig. Gary took a step back like he was going to be sick and didn't want to get it all over the baby pig.

Come on, Gary. How else are we going to get the heart? Are you scared like the cry baby over there? The kid with the baseball hat pointed towards Billy. Do you really think that the Snatcher is going to come and take your organs? He smirked at Gary.

If you want to call him why don't you do it, Tommy? And I am not scared. I just cant kill that baby pig.

I can’t do it. I am already in trouble for tipping the cows over on Old Dickerson's farm. If they catch me killing the pig, then I am going to boarding school. Tommy’s smirk became a frown. He didn't want to go to boarding school, but he also didn't want to stop having fun.

Tommy how did you get caught cow tipping? You know Mr. Dickerson watches his cows like a hawk. You will never learn, will you? You always are getting yourself in trouble. But if you want this pig dead, you’re going to have to do it yourself. I ain't killing it, Tommy. Gary started to walk away from the other two boys.

Come on, boys, how else are we going to get the Snatcher to come to the house? Tommy pleaded with the boys. Gary turned back around, looking at Tommy’s pleading face.

"It’s a myth. There is no such thing as the Snatcher. My mom said that the Snatcher was used when people wanted to die in the old days and didn't want to kill themselves. They

would call the doctor out by leaving a pig heart out side their door, and the Snatcher would know which house to go into. He would only harm the person that called him," Gary stated as if it were fact.

That’s not right. Lu, a boy in my class, said his cousin did it and that the Snatcher came in and killed his cousin and the whole family. The only survivor was his little sister because she was staying the night at a friend’s house, and so she lived, Tommy said proudly, like he knew something that someone else didn't know.

Then how do they know that it was the Snatcher and not someone that was crazy? Gary asked with interest.

Because Lu's cousin told him what he was doing the day that it happened, Tommy spit out like he felt like he didn't need to explain himself.

I want to go home, Tommy. I don't think that Mom or Dad will like us being out here, Billy said, wiping his nose.

Out of the three boys Billy was the youngest. He was nine and two years younger than his brother Tommy. Tommy was the leader of the three boys, as he was the boy who was the boldest and always getting them in trouble. Gary was Tommy's best friend and hung around the boy’s house every day.

Come on guys, let’s go back to your house before we miss dinner and get in trouble, Gary moaned and placed his hand on his stomach like he was so hungry that it was killing him.

No, we are not going anywhere until one of you chicken shits kills this baby pig. I don't care if it takes all night. Tommy stood with his hands on his hips as if this was going to stop the other two boys from leaving.

I am not doing it, and neither is Billy. You can’t make us do it. And you should do it. No one is going to !nd out that it is us here unless you tell someone, Gary shouted at Tommy.

One of you is going to do it. If you guys don't do it, then I will take the heart of one of you. Tommy pushed Gary to the "oor.

Gary landed backwards, landing on his bottom. He looked up at Tommy, his eyes !lled with tears and anger. Hurt set in. He had always been on Tommy's good side, never on the receiving end of Tommy’s bullying.

What did you do that for, Tommy? What’s got into you? Gary asked.

Look, I told Richie that we would do this, and there is no way that I am allowing him to call me a yellow belly. We are going to do this. One of you is going to kill this pig. Tommy stomped his foot down, scaring the pig, making it try to escape.

Fine, Tommy. You want someone to kill the damn pig? I will do it. Gary got up and brushed himself o#.

Gary and Tommy turned so that they could see the pig. Standing over the pig with the knife in his hand was Billy. There was blood running down the knife, and tears in Billy's eyes. The pig didn't make a sound, just lay there bleeding from the open wound in his chest. Billy threw down the knife and started to run away. His cries could be heard as he ran away.

Oh my god, he did it. Look at that. Tommy pointed at the pig that was bleeding out and turning the green grass red. The pink pig now looked a pale gray.

Oh, I can’t believe that he did it. Gary sounded like he

was going to be sick. He grabbed his mouth, holding back his disgust.

Tommy and Gary walked over to the pig and poked at it with their feet. The pig !opped every time the boys touched it.

You need to reach in there and get the heart before it’s fully dead, Gary told Tommy.

We need to hurry. If my brother gets home before us and my mom sees him, we are all going to be in trouble.

The boys went to their knees. Their faces started to turn green like they both were going to be sick. Tommy stuck his hand into the gaping hole and started to feel around. He made a few gagging sounds and started to pull out everything that he was touching.

Tommy could feel the muscles tearing each time he pulled what ever he touched. He "nally pulled out the heart. Tommy thought that he could still feel the heart beating in his hand.

That’s so cool, Gary exclaimed in excitement.

I think that it is still moving. Tommy’s face was stuck in horror. However, a sense of pride started to show. He was going to show Richie who the brave one was. There was no way that Richie would do anything like this.

Come on, Tommy. We better catch up to Billy and get that thing somewhere so your mom will not nd it."

The two boys ran to catch up with Billy. When they found him, he was sitting under a tree crying. His hands were stained with blood and his face had smear marks on it from wiping the tears from his face.

You’re the man, Billy. I didn't think that you had it in you. Gary plopped down next to the crying child.

I didn't want to, he whimpered I just wanted to go home. Can we just go home now? The boy wiped his eyes again, smearing more blood across his face.

Look what we got. Tommy stuck his hand out to show Billy the pig’s heart.

Billy looked at it. His lips started to clench like his was holding back from throwing up everywhere. Then he stood up so that he could get a closer look.

Is that real? Is that really from the pig? His face had a strange excitement on it. It doesn't look like a heart to me.

"Well, of course a real heart doesn't look like what we draw. Come on, we need to get you cleaned up and home so mom
