About this ebook

After surviving a winter among wolves in the wild, a cold-hearted man sets out for revenge in this novel of the frontier by “a first-rate storyteller” (The Washington Times).

Winsor Glanvil pays court to Louise Carney, heiress to a fortune—and she agrees to marry him. But the marriage is opposed by big Jack Rutledge, a jealous rival and formidable foe, so Glanvil and Louise plan to be married in a sequestered valley by a local clergyman.

Then Rutledge and his supporters learn of the plan, arrive in the valley ahead of the two, seize Glanvil, and beat him mercilessly. Wounded and weakened, Glanvil manages to retaliate by shooting Rutledge and escaping on a stolen horse. But he is not safe yet. Deep in the hills, exhausted and near death, he finds a cave in which to seek sanctuary—then discovers that it is the den of a she-wolf and her young cub. Over a long winter, he succeeds in turning an uneasy truce into an actual bond with the wolves. And when he sets out for home in the spring—only to learn that Rutledge is very much alive and engaged to Louise Carney—he will not be alone . . .
