Cheat on Him - Riley Brooke

    1

Samantha Lansing spent the entire flight to San Francisco thinking about the conversation with her husband, Theo, the night before she left. ‘Cheat on me,’ he said to her. What did that even mean? Was it even cheating if he asked for it? Sam asked herself. She couldn’t get these questions out of her mind. It was the last thing she needed to think about before attending a four-day tech conference.

She stared out the window as the plane touched down. Thankfully, it had been a smooth flight. That, however, did not stop her travel partner, Katie, from sipping down two vodka sodas before noon. Over the several-hour flight, Katie had recapped four television shows she’d recently binged. It wasn’t the most interesting conversation, but it proved to be an acceptable distraction from other thoughts.

Like Sam, Katie was also in her late twenties. Samantha was glad that they were both picked together for this trip. This being her first conference, she was hoping to go with someone around her age. The other employees in the marketing department were the type to spend a full day on a sightseeing tour of San Francisco with the plan to be in bed early. It was a stuffy and boring bunch. If Sam was going to spend a weekend listening to industry panels, she wanted to at least have fun in the evenings.

Thank god, Katie said, letting out a sigh of relief as the plane slowed down on its way to the gate. That was a rocky flight.

Sam wasn’t sure what she was talking about. Aside from the few bumps here and there, it had been clear skies and smooth coasting. Then again, Sam had always loved flying - she even considered becoming a pilot in her teens. A little turbulence was just part of the experience for her. To fly, you had to learn to enjoy the ups and the downs.

You do know that flying is one of the safest forms of travel, Samantha said to Katie. She’d been repeating that same fact all morning. She’d been getting a kick out of how angry it got Katie.

You’ve told me that twenty times today, Katie said, crumpling up a napkin and holding it in her fist before dropping it into her empty drink cup. I think it’s fair to be anxious when you’re two hundred feet above the ground.

Actually, the average flight is about thirty-five thousand feet above the surface.

I hate you, Katie said, trying to force back the smile spreading across her face.

You should be glad you’re stuck with me for the next four days and not Lisa from branding.

She’s the worst, Katie replied with a long groan. You know she was supposed to come instead of you - but then she had to pull out for some parent-teacher conference bullshit. I nearly screamed with joy when I found out.

The plane reached the gate. Sam looked over her seat and stared all the way down to the front to see a handful of people shuffling towards the exit. In standard practice, the company they worked for had been cheap and booked them in the back of the plane. While Sam loved flying, she didn’t love the waiting.

They should offer the people in the back a drink to reward their patience, Katie said, seeing if there was any drop of alcohol left in her cup.

The crowd started moving. A line of people lined up like ducks waddling forward in an orderly fashion, clutching their oversized luggage between their legs.

We should get off this plane, Sam said to Katie. Sam stood up and hit her head on the roof air controls. Sam wasn’t even average height for a woman. They do keep making these things smaller, she thought.

Dear God, please get me off of this hunk of metal, Katie shouted to herself. A few of the people in front of them looked back at Katie.

Why had their boss chosen them of all people to represent the company at one of the biggest conferences of the year? That was a terrible choice, Sam thought to herself as she pulled her bag from the overhead storage.

As they exited the plane, Sam could feel the warm California air wash over her. It had already snowed for the first time in their hometown of Madison, Wisconsin. Sam was not sad to leave, even though she would miss her three cats and her husband. Still, this was her first trip on her own in years and she was ready to get away from the routine, even for just a few days.

But as soon as her mind focused on the good, she flashed back to her doe-eyed husband saying to her, ‘cheat on me’. The thought of it caused her teeth to clench.

Want to stop at a bar and get a drink before we head to the hotel? Katie asked as they walked up the ramp. We got nothing else to do today.

If you get me drunk at noon and I’ll be asleep at five. Then I’ll be the boring one.

It’s just one drink, Katie said, tapping Sam eagerly on the arm. Come on, we’re on vacation - kind of.

Alright, you’ve convinced me, Sam said, shaking her head. A drink at noon wasn’t the best choice. But on her fake vacation, a few bad choices would be allowed. If only because I’ll put this on the company card.

Both Katie and Sam were wearing oversized hoodies and leggings. They had made the joint decision that if their company would not put them in business class, then they were going to slum it. It wasn’t quite the look you put on when drinking at a bar, but she and Katie were pulling off.

They found a bar at the front of the gate. The bartender was still cleaning off the bar for the first set of customers. Sam looked at her phone. It was five past noon and the bar had likely opened within the past five minutes. She and Katie were honored to be their first customers. They ordered two beers, and the bartender made some poor joke about starting the vacation off right.

No emails from anyone at HQ, Katie said, scrolling through her phone as she sipped on her beer. I think we’re safe for the rest of the day.

Both she and Katie worked for a tech company out of Madison that made scheduling software for software development companies. They had sent Sam and Katie to this conference to learn more about the industry so that they could better market to it. Although, Katie had raised the conspiracy that their boss had sent the two most junior - and most attractive - employees to lure tech bros into hearing about their software solution. A conspiracy that was making more and more sense to Sam.

We’re going to get pitched terrible apps all weekend, aren’t we? Sam asked, nursing her beer, which was already half empty.

Just be prepared for a lot of tech bros to tell you about how much Bitcoin they have, Katie replied. When I came to this thing last year, I set my phone to ping me every fifteen minutes. That way I always have something important I have I have to respond to right away. I’d suggest you do the same.

    That’s brilliant.

But don’t worry, once you get used to dodging the bros, this conference is super fun. They go all out. The parties are wild with tons of free booze. Last year they had DJ Timestop.

Katie had already told her half a dozen times that DJ Timestop had hit on her after his set. She had a boyfriend at the time, so she chatted with him for a while before getting nervous and ducking off to the bathroom.

So now that you’re single, are you going to approach this weekend any differently? Sam asked with a grin. Maybe you can get that second chance with Mr. Timestop.

I’m open, Katies replied, waffling over her beer. Although, I’m over the whole DJ thing. This time it’s all about one of the CEO types - like the super-rich kind. I just want to be wined and dined for the weekend at the best restaurants. I’ll put out for that.

Sam laughed. Katie was the type to seem like a wild child, but she was also Magna Cum Laude at her university and was one of the smartest people she knew. She talked a big game, but that usually amounted to her going out, drinking responsibly, and getting home at a reasonable time. In no way was she equipped to nab any tech CEO. But Sam hadn’t been on a trip with Katie before - maybe she’d really let that inner wild child out.

I wish you all the best in those endeavors, Sam said, raising her glass in cheers. I will not be nabbing any tech CEOs this weekend. Although the wining and dining sounds nice.

Well, you have Theo, Katie said, nodding towards the wedding ring on Samantha’s finger. He’s got the look of a tech CEO, just maybe not the money. Although, is he still growing that mustache?

Are you getting drunk on me? Sam asked.

I’m just saying, you have an attractive husband. That’s a compliment. But I don’t know if I’m a fan of the mustache.

She pictured Theo in her head. He was tall, with dark eyes, brown hair, and biceps that made her knees shake. He’d been a theater lead in college and had gotten in the habit of wearing a little mascara around his eyes. Sam had always found it a turn-on, especially when he would also rip his shirt off on stage. Theo was now working on starting a brewery with a few of his college buddies and growing a terrible mustache. Maybe he’d be a CEO one day, Sam thought to herself. Although, he’d likely never have that tech money.

Theo and Sam had been trying out one of the latest sour beers he’d been working on the previous night. Sam didn’t like the taste of sour beers, but she was always willing to give him her honest opinion. As the night went on, he kept asking about the parties at this conference and what brand of guys would be there. Sam hadn’t been sure what he was leading to. Then he claimed to have a confession for her. ‘I want you to cheat on me,’ he said. She wished they had more time to discuss it. All he said was that it was something that turned him on and that she should try taking her ring off for the weekend.

Sam twisted her wedding ring around the base of her finger. It had only been a year since they’d married, but it felt like she’d worn that ring her entire life. Sam chalked the whole discussion up to Theo having one too many beers. Nevertheless, something about it nagged on her brain.

You spacing out on me? Katie asked, waving her hand in front of Sam.

Sorry. I was just thinking about something Theo was saying to me, Sam said, looking back up at Katie. But you’re right, Theo is an attractive guy. I’m even learning to love the mustache.

Don’t sound so enthusiastic about your hot husband, Katie said. She ran her finger around the top of her beer glass. Better hold on to that one or some floozy will swing in and take him.

I could do pretty well on my own, Sam replied.

Well, maybe we’ll just have to play a game of ‘see who can get hit on more’ this weekend, Katie said, cracking herself up.

I think given that this is a conference of seventy percent men, maybe we should aim for quality rather than quantity.

Katie slowly nodded her head and squinted her eyes at Sam. I love that for us.

Maybe we should finish our drinks and get to the hotel, Sam said, finishing the last sip of her beer. Work doesn’t start until tomorrow, so we need to take advantage of a mostly free day.

While Katie was gathering her belongings and finishing her beer, Sam pulled out her phone and texted Theo. She had forgotten to let him know they landed safely. Normally, at this time, Theo would be on his afternoon run. As she stood there waiting for his reply, she couldn’t help but feel angry at him. I’m not just going to cheat on my husband, she thought. Before meeting Theo, she had been in another long-term relationship with her high school sweetheart. One-night stands were not her thing - even if she could well on her own.

Okay, I’m ready, Katie said, standing next to her barstool. She had thrown on her two extra coats she was carrying to avoid checking a bag, headphones hung around her neck on top of her neck pillow, and a pair of shades was hanging at the edge of her nose. Somehow, Sam thought she pulled the whole look off.

Sam and Katie grabbed a ride-share out of the airport and went downtown to their hotel. In typical fashion for their company, they weren’t at the finest hotel. When they got to the building, they thought they were lost. A crowd of shady people huddled by the stairway up to a four-story brick building. Katie must have looked at her phone fifty times before confirming that they were at the right address.

At least we’re right around the corner from the convention center, Sam said, forcing a smile.

Once they worked their way through the front door and up to the front desk, they confirmed their suspicions - this was the hotel that they were booked for. The receptionist handed them actual keys, which seemed like the first red flag. A rickety elevator took them up to the third floor, where a tangled and dusty carpet led them to their room.

Opening up the door, they were greeted with a short hallway. On either side were illustrations of dogs and cats in a style that could very well be the inspiration of a lot of nightmares. How do you make cats look so ugly? Sam thought gazing at one of the pictures.

The rest of the room was equally dated and uninspired. Katie collapsed on the bed, letting out a long groan. It may have been the lighting, but Sam thought she saw a plume of dust erupt from the bed around Katie.

You don’t even want a fancy hotel, Sam said, looking out the window at their view of the alley. It’s more reason to be out in the city.

This room smells like dog hair, Katie cried. I can’t bring a guy back here.

Sam took a whiff - it smelled like dog hair. More importantly, Sam wasn’t sure if Katie was serious about wanting to bring men back to the sacred space of their shitty hotel room.

If you land the CEO, go to his place, Sam said. That way I can sleep in peace.

Katie had the look of another long and incoherent rant on her face. Thankfully for Sam, she was interrupted by a buzzing coming from Sam’s bag.

I think your vibrator is going off, Katie said, rolling to look over at Sam’s bag.

Sam grabbed her bag and pulled out her phone, flashing it to Katie to show it was not her vibrator. Instead, it was Theo calling her. I wish it was just my vibrator, Sam thought. The feelings from last night's conversation swelled in her stomach. She didn’t want to talk with Theo. She was just going to confirm she was alive and leave it at that.

I should take it, Sam said, stepping toward the door.

Okay, Katie said, crawling under the covers of her bed like a hibernating bear. I’m going to take a nap and drink off those airplane cocktails.

    Sam laughed. You do that.

Answering the call, Sam proceeded to step out into the hallway.

    Hey, what’s up, she said.

Just wanted to call and see how the flight was, Theo replied. She could tell from his heaving breathing that he had just got back from his run. That or he was cheating on her. The thought certainly crossed her mind.

It was fine, Sam replied, feeling herself being short with Theo. Katie had a few drinks today to calm the flight anxiety. She’s currently passed out in the room.

Theo laughed. Sounds like a good start to the trip. Any other plans?

Not yet, we need to pick up our badges tonight. Then we’ll probably grab dinner somewhere.

Well, eat good food for me. I hear that San Fran has more than fried cheese and butter burgers.

    I will try.

I don’t want to keep you for very long, I just wanted to say about last night…

Sam cut him off. It’s no big deal. We don’t even need to talk about it.

A silence filled the space between them.

It was an idea I had, Theo said. She could hear the hesitation in his voice. It’s something I was thinking about, and I probably should have brought it up months ago. Not the night before you left. That was too much to put on you.

    Yeah.

I guess I just wanted to recreate the risk of our relationship before we got married. Now things feel so safe. And I just maybe had one too many of those sours, Theo paused. "I don’t know. Don’t
