CHAPTER 1

IAN WHITE STOOD with his suitcase in the living room of the building that would be his home for the next two years. Like the rest of the house, it seemed far too big for him. The hardwood floors creaked as he looked around, studying the décor.

What do you think? his godmother Susan said, caressing his back, lightly. Isn't it lovely?

It seemed more like a museum than a home; so much expensive, ornate furniture with old paintings lining the walls. Beautiful, but not very comfortable or welcoming.

It's... nice, Ian said, staring at a large painting of the crucifixion that took up the entire corner of one wall. Did Mom really buy this place just for me?

Susan stepped over to him as he stared down at the floral embroidery on the room's large, bulky couch. She wanted to make sure you had a space away from the temptations of the city. The woman sighed, clasping her hands in front of her. Faith and Ministry is a wonderful college, but I wish it weren't in the middle of such a decadent pit of sin.

Ian scratched the back of his neck. I don't know. Seattle seems like a pretty neat place.

His godmother shook her head sadly, turning to the room's wide bay window. Outside, past a modest lawn, other old-fashioned homes ran down a small slope towards the bay. In the distance sat Faith and Ministry College, just a short walk from his new home. Appearances can be deceiving, unfortunately. Its beauty belies the true nature of its inhabitants.

Ian looked at his godmother. She was his mother's best friend and closest confidant, but she was only ten years older than he was. Her face was delicate, framed by a smooth sheet of blonde hair that fell to her shoulders. She was slim, her soft curves hidden beneath a dark sweater and knee-length skirt.

His mother had entrusted him into Susan's care many times, and even now as he ventured out to start his third year in college after his first two spent studying remotely, she had likewise come to be the same guide and protector for him she had always been since his father had passed.

Have you found a place for yourself yet? he said as she turned back to him.

She nodded. I have. It's a short drive from here, so I'll be nearby should you need me. Her full lips rose in a playful smile. And so I can keep a close eye on you, young man.

I still don't understand why you aren't staying here. Ian gestured around him. This place is enormous. It's got four bedrooms, a finished basement, an attic. He laughed. "It
