About this ebook
How would you know when the last of anything is gone?
Everything has an expiration date, a point that it simply is no more. Most of the time we aren't even aware we've reached that time until we look around and see that our era has ended, our favorite ice cream flavor is no longer made, we can't get a telephone that doesn't connect to the internet, or the last duck is gone.
This is a story about two people, quite like us, living in another time, a difficult time, possibly in another place, but one that looks a lot like this one might become not far down the road of time.

Everything has an expiration date, a point that it simply is no more. Most of the time we aren’t even aware we’ve reached that time until we look around and see that our era has ended, our favorite ice cream flavor is no longer made, we can’t get a telephone that doesn’t connect to the internet, or the last duck is gone.
THE LAST DUCK
When I walked into the park in the early afternoon a movement caught my attention. I turned and saw a duck. The mallard (I have no earthly idea what kind of duck it was, I know nothing of ducks) was a rather sad-looking specimen, who floated uncomfortably in the shallow part of the pond. He had parked himself among tall grass or reeds. The vegetation wasn’t thick enough to hide him, but the grass is probably a breeding ground for tiny fish, which would make it a bounteous feeding ground for a hungry, nasty-looking duck.
The duck made me think of myself, well, it made me think of all of us. We are all pretty nasty looking these days, scruffy, underfed, dirty... not that there is much anyone can do about any of
