    ANN

The second her right foot touched the bottom step of the back porch; her father struck her left cheek. Ann stumbled and fell into the dirt. Her ears rang and her vision blurred. Her lip had split against her teeth and blood caked her bitten tongue. The familiar sound of his belt buckle jingled above her kept her on edge. He snatched the young woman up and dragged her inside. She landed stomach first onto the small kitchen table. Ann didn’t dare move as he lifted the skirt of her dress.

I told you not to leave this property.

Lord God, she choked, trying to breathe. please forgive me. I’m only a foolish girl. Please, forgive me, Lord, she mumbled between hits, feeling no repentance. She hated her father for what he was doing to her. The prayer came out but the one she thought, she kept to herself. Ann prayed Russell Collins would die. In her heart, she believed he deserved it.

The lashing stopped. Good girl. You may face me now. Ann did what she was told. He happily took his daughter’s hands into his and kissed her knuckles. There was nothing within her. She was dead inside.

You are daddy’s perfect girl and God will bless you, he cooed with a stomach-churning smile.

Ann’s mother died on the day of her birth. She had no
