    Prologue

Future, what a funny word that is. I never got a future. I had mine snapped away from me by the creature known as the alien.

The alien had taken control of my mind. I tried to fight the darkness at first, but eventually, I gave in as the power was too strong for me to reject. My name is Lillian, and this is how I turned into a raving lunatic. In the year 1969, I’d been chosen for my scientific work to travel into space to fix the space telescope. Of course, I’d said yes to going – who wouldn’t want the choice to go into space? – but the moment I’d gotten there, my life changed forever.

Once I had arrived, my crew and I had been ambushed by a green mist of smoke. At first, I’d thought it was just a space weather storm of some kind, but the mist had grown bigger. The mist had laughed. My name is Tryjon Five. The alien had attacked all of the astronauts and had killed all of them. The alien had brown horns with silvery-grey hair. He was wearing blue-and-orange gauntlets and had purple skin with a green tail. Finally, it had killed everyone except for me.

The mist had spoken. You are the only one who will obey me. All the others weren’t tasty enough. Their minds were simply too sophisticated.

I had slowly gotten up off the floor and cried to the mist, Please don’t kill me. I have three children; one is called Richard – he’s a nice boy – and a girl called Rebecca, and finally, I have a foster son. They call him Raven.

The green mist had laughed. Soon it won’t matter how good they are, because the battle of the future is coming.

    I’d cried, What are you?

The mist had grabbed her by the neck and said, I’m the thing that lurks in the night. I’m the one who created the shadows. I’m the father and the Earth. They call me the Galaxy.

I’d shouted, "Ow! Please just tell me what you want."

The green mist had said, I want you as my puppet to do my bidding. I want you to wreak havoc on Earth so that you can prepare the future for my arrival.

    But why? I’d asked.

    What do you want?

For starters, miss, I would like it if you would shut up. I mean, are all humans this annoying?

Suddenly, I’d gasped. You’re an alien.

The alien had begun to cry. I’ve been here for two hours, and you’ve only just figured it out. I mean, oh my god, please help me.

The alien had heard enough of my nonsense and had slowly begun to crawl his way into my mind. I was now under the control of the alien, and I had to do everything that the alien had suggested.

Now, my puppet, go to Earth and get Richard first. I hear that your son is an immensely powerful adversary.

I sighed. Yes, my master. I will do as you wish. I was a goth girl. Back home I had blue hair and was wearing silver armbands. I wore a purple dress and had black boots on, god don’t I miss wearing those clothes. Now I feel trapped entoxicated by these white clothes that any minite if I take my helmet off outside I’d be breathless by the vacum off space.

    *        *        *

Six weeks had passed since the incident on the space station.

Richard, my son, I need you to create a scenario where Raven must travel through time to collect nine crystal elements, I’d said.

"You do know that she could be a problem."

Who? Nora? Oh, don’t worry about her. I can control her powers and manipulate her into killing Raven.

Mother, why? Raven is still my brother. I can’t kill him.

That’s why it will be Nora who kills him, I’d said. I mean, what a perfect love story. I always hated that girl playing with you and Raven’s heart.

Mother, you can’t. I won’t let you, Richard had screamed.

Suddenly, the alien had crawled out of Lillian’s mind and into Richard’s. Ha, what a pathetic fool. These humans have no idea what is in store for their world.

This is the story of my revenge for what the alien did to me. This is the story of Raven. The future awaits.

    Chapter 1

    The Journey to the

    Town of Rubies

    45778.png

Some people say that every town has a mystery behind it and that every world needs a hero. But what if I were to tell you that these tales were true?

One sunny day, a class of about thirty children aged nine to twelve were walking onto a yellow school bus. The teacher, a nice woman with rosy-red cheeks, wearing a black overcoat, was counting the children individually as they got on the bus.

OK, everyone, settle down because today we are going to a little town called Rubies, the teacher said.

The only boy who was paying any attention at all to his teacher was little Raven. He had fuzzy, green hair and was wearing a white-and-turquoise overcoat with turquoise-and-orange trousers blue-and-grey boots. The school bus finally left little Redwood School and drove down Cherry Avenue.

As the bus left the quiet mountain town, there were fewer and fewer buildings until finally no building was in sight. The journey seemed to go on forever, and the children were getting restless and tired. Two boys started fighting over sweets. Raven stood up and separated the boys.

One of the boys called, So, what, because your dad owns the school, you think you’re untouchable? Well, guess what. I’m going to make sure that today is the day that you pay.

You guys think you actually scare me? the other boy responded.

Raven said, I don’t know what is funnier: the fact that you two are fighting over sweets or the fact that you’re basically a pig wearing a wig.

The teacher stood up and separated the three boys.

OK, now, everyone, sit down now, or you will all be in detention tomorrow. I have lost my patience with the two of you. Raven, look, I know that you were trying to help, but leave the hero work to the professionals.

The bus stopped to fuel up for gas, and the children were allowed to stretch their legs for five minutes. Raven had walked over to his school teacher and he had asked his teacher were it was they were going. The teacher replied back Raven my child we are going to a small beach town called Rubies. How long for Raven asked? Just for the weekend said the teacher. Raven had marched off from the teacher when he had a weird feeling that someone was watching. He noticed a girl watching him, but she disappeared.

Raven, sweetie, it’s time to go, the teacher said.

Once the bus started up again, it was about ten minutes until they would reach the town called Rubies.

    Chapter 2

    The Memory of the Ancestor

    45778.png

The winds were gushing, and the air was salty, trickling off the crashing rocks of the ocean, which was nothing but a graveyard of endless ships. The town had a mysterious vibe, as if anyone who entered would sink into a cold, endless void of nothingness. There was a mysterious feeling of guilt and horror in the air. The air was as fresh as daisies and as calm as a war about to start. But Raven had this feeling that he had been to this town before, that he was some way connected to all the evil things that had happened here over the years.

Hey, Miss, since we’re spending the weekend here, can I go to the bookstore to purchase a book of the town’s history? Raven pointed across the street to a small, local shop.

The teacher knew Raven loved to read. Oh, Raven, you know that this is supposed to be a school trip, right? But who am I to say no to a boy wanting to learn more. Of course, you can go.

After Raven purchased the book, he met his class back at the school bus. Raven learned from the book that back in 1899 this town had had a series of unsolved murders, and people had been disappearing from the town for the last seventy years.

The teacher separated the children into three groups, and they started walking towards the beach where they were going to have lunch. Raven staggered down the mossy, green stairs and walked onto the golden sands. As the group of children approached the beach, the teacher pulled out the red-and-white picnic blanket.

Suddenly, Raven had a flashback to his ancestors in the 1820s.

Tell me, Roxana, where is the map? Where are the three elemental scripts of wisdom?

You can kill me, Father, but the truth is you will never get your hand on the scripts. You can burn me on the pyres of hell, but I will never tell you anything.

Norman was Roxana’s farther. He wore a white shirt and had black trousers on. He was a man of god, a priest. Norman had slapped his daughter, and she had spat blood onto his white shirt.

Are you really going to make your children suffer because of your mistakes?

Roxana laughed. What type of man threatens his own grandchildren?

My children shall rise again, but you shall die knowing that you failed in your mission.

    Roxana laughed again.

Norman cried, I’m sorry, my daughter. I have failed you.

Roxana spat blood onto an old blanket and said her spell: Inigumaria.

The blanket disappeared, and Roxana died in the flames of hell.

Raven had collapsed onto the golden sands during his visions of the past. He awakened and walked over to the calm seas. He asked himself, What is happening to me?

It was twelve o clock, and the lunch had finally been brought over by the best cooks in Rubies. There were mountains of sausages and crisps and jelly and every food that should be at a picnic.

The teacher approached Raven and sat next to him. Raven did not move but gave her a warm, assuring smile.

Is everything OK, Raven? You’ve been very distant ever since we arrived at this town.

I’m perfectly fine. There’s nothing to worry about. I’ve just been reliving my family tree over and over in my head. I have a strange feeling that I’ve been to this town before – that there is a destiny out there calling to me.

Raven, sweetie, life is never clear, but from what I’ve seen from you, you’re destined for great things.

    Thanks.

    You’re welcome. She stood.

OK, everyone, hurry and finish off your lunch. We will be going to the town’s museum shortly, so no misbehaving. And, everyone, remember: listen and observe, as what you learn today could lead to greatness in your future.

    45760.png

    Chapter 3

    The Clues of Destiny

    45778.png

The class walked for what felt like miles until they finally reached the museum. The entrance was mystical: the bricks were old, like before the Ice Age old, and the structure was as if Cleopatra herself were alive today.

Raven was the first to enter the museum, and that’s when he saw the girl watching him again on the steps next to the dinosaur replica.

Hey, you, stop. I’m not going to hurt you. Why do you keep looking at me?

I can’t tell you anything, but let’s just say that our destinies are entwined. You will know everything when the time is right.

Hey, wait. Who are you? Can you at least tell me where you’re from? Come on, at least tell me something?

    But the girl was gone.

Something about her appearance struck Raven. He recalled seeing her somewhere else. The book he purchased. He’d seen her image there. Raven opened the book to see her profile inked into the bindings of the book.

Suddenly, Raven’s book started to glow. It was as if the book were answering his question. According to the caption with the picture, her name was Nora, and she was thirteen years of age. She had light-pink curly hair and was wearing a purple top with a green dress and brown boots. Nora had a whip in one of her hands and had a medical pouch strapped to her belt. Nora was a seeress, who could see multiple futures. But the more futures she saw, the closer she became to death.

Raven had been told all his life that he was different, but ever since he’d arrived in the town of Rubies, strange and mysterious things had happened to him.

As the class joined Raven inside the museum, a man in a grey overcoat joined them.

Right, everyone, I shall be your guide to this museum, and I will be giving you the tour of the seven different times throughout history. OK, if you will all follow me, we shall start with the Ice Age.

As the kids followed the museum guide into the Ice Age exhibit, he described the mammoths and how the dinosaurs were the ones that killed out the humans. The museum guide described how throughout time there were seven realms. There was the Ice Age, when the mammoths were living amongst the humans; then there was the Collision Course when the world was melting, and the dawn of humanity was coming into the world. After the asteroids had hit the world, it was nothing but a vast and deserted wasteland. It was then when that the humans had started to build the pyramids. Thousands of years later, there were metahumans – extraordinary people with superpowers who were the origins of one kid called Raven the First.

Many years after that, the world was frozen still because of the metahumans. They had destroyed everything good about the world, and that was why the world had stood still. The world had finally started up again, thanks to Raven the Second. It was his amazing abilities that had started the hunt for the three artefacts that have been lost through time, each of Raven’s ancestors had travelled back to the past to find them, but none had prevailed to bring down the metahumans. There is a legend that says Raven the Eighth would be the one to put the whole puzzle together. He would be the saviour of humankind; he will be the one to bring down the evil darkness in the world.

    *        *        *

Suddenly everyone had stopped and glared at Raven, Raven gulped and noticed he was sweating. Why is everyone looking at me for? One of Ravens class mates laughed funny coincidence that the heroes were all called Raven yet so are you. So what does that have to do with me Raven said, one off the bullies from the bus shoved Raven to the floor and yelled you a hero... You belong with the rest of the rats in the sewers. The school teacher had rushed over and gave Raven her hand, the teacher looked at the bully like a fire breathing dragon. That’s enough! The bully froze, as Raven got up to the floor Raven had made his hand into a fist and had went to punch the bully. The bully had ducked and Raven had accidentally punched the teacher in the face knocking her off her knees. The bully and all Raven’s classmates had laughed. Next time make sure you hit the right target said the teacher. The teacher had begun to walk to the back of the museum.

    *        *        *

Right, everyone, thank you for coming to this museum, and I look forwards to the upcoming future – after all, it has been five thousand years since metahumans were last spotted on earth.

Sir, I have to ask you. Who is this Raven? Raven had said.

He was a man who never knew he was meant for greatness. He had no superpowers – he just had magic and the potential to help others.

Thanks, Raven said to the museum guide.

As they left the museum, Raven was left with more questions than answers. He was shocked at how much he had learned, but he did not want to accept his destiny.

    45760.png

    Chapter 4

    Echoes of the Lighthouse

    45778.png

It was getting close to night-time, and Raven was looking at the glistening moon when his schoolteacher had come along.

    Raven, are you OK?

Yes, I’m fine, thank you. But I need to ask you something.

    Anything, Raven, replied the teacher.

Why did we come here to the town of Rubies?

We came here because I felt like I was drawn to this town. It was like the town was whispering for me to bring the class here. Raven, why do you keep on doing this to yourself? the teacher said. We come here on weekend out, and you think that you have some special destiny.

I’m sorry. I’m going to sit at the beach, Raven said.

Raven walked off down the cliffs and sat down by the moist sand. It was nine at night, and Raven was still thinking about the dream he’d had the previous morning when he’d left Redwood. He was so confused about everything he had learned; he was pulled into the journal and had lived the history of his ancestors and learned that Roxana had magic. He also learned about the town of Rubies and everything mysterious that had happened at that town ever since the town was opened. Then, there was today at the museum and learning about the metahumans.

It just feels like everything that I know was a lie, that everything I ever heard of about myself was all fabricated, and that I was meant to believe in my destiny, he said to himself. I just wish I knew what that girl Nora was thinking in telling me that our destinies are entwined.

    *        *        *

The next morning, there was a loud bang, and an old man landed on top of a hard oak table.

You can’t stop what is to come. You know as well as I do that the boy is not ready to fight.

If the darkness recruits him before we do, then the world will be frozen in time again. We both know that the boy is special, that he is Raven the eighth. Yet you still won’t do anything I will look out for the boy just like I looked out for his ancestor before him. My name is the captain of the lighthouse and you will not interfere with my plans do I make myself clear Cleo

Raven came down the cold, marble stairs and saw the old man and a blonde female were just about to fight when Raven approached.

I know that I’m special. I know who I’m meant to be, but it’s not my fault that my bloodline keeps saving the universe.

Kid, you don’t know what you’re talking about the captain had said. Besides, even if you were this person, you look like you’re about to cry, and how could a boy like you be a hero? I have seen more action from a six-year-old girl. Now stop wasting my time. Anyways, I best be off, my lady.

When the other children approached for breakfast, the teacher sat herself down next to Raven, and the two began to talk.

OK, everyone, we learned quite a lot about the town of Rubies yesterday, but we still have ourselves to learn about and why we’re here on this earth.

After the teacher gave her boring speech, Raven sneaked outside and headed to the lighthouse cliffs. Once he was there, he smelled the green moss of the cliffs; they were as green as the pearly ocean, as fresh as a spearmint, and as earthy as the earth itself. Raven opened the lighthouse door. The door creaked and swayed; then there was a creepy voice.

    Get out!

    Chapter 5

    Discovering the

    Truth of Raven

    45778.png

Raven was not sure what exactly he had just heard, but he knew that whatever it was, it was just another mystery that was in the town of Rubies. Out of all the towns on earth, why choose this small mountain town? The town had about three thousand people in total, but one third of that population was dead and the rest in jail.

Raven overheard two men talking about three scripts that give great power. The two men were leaning on the sharp bricks of the lighthouse.

Hey, mate, did you hear they apparently destroyed the crystal scripts today? said the first man. That apparently they built some sort of sandcastle? I just think the whole thing is nothing more than a big joke.

Nah, that’s not what I heard. I heard that the crystal script was buried back in its original spot where the legend or myth, Raven the First, had buried it all of them years ago, but apparently, Raven wasn’t of alien origins. He was the smartest king of the time. But who knows? Right? After all, we weren’t there all of them years ago, said the second male.

When breakfast was over, the two school bullies had walked down to the lighthouse, and that was when they had seen Raven. It was then that it happened. The bullies had thrown a rock at Raven, and Raven’s eyes went red.

    He is not even human.

Raven ran. The bullies started to chase Raven down the spiral staircase of the tower and out of the black oak door.

It finally makes sense now, the entire time at school all those fires that magical happened all the mysterious disappearances. How many people have you hurt in your quest for power all the times you were gone without an explanation. Well, now you will pay, said the first bully.

"Guys, please, you can’t do this. You know that I’m a good person. You know that I’m here to help, said Raven.

Tell us why, said the second bully.

    Why what? said Raven.

Why are you a hero? said the first bully.

Why are you the chosen one? both bullies said.

"Guy’s, I’m sorry, but it all started a long time ago when my ancestors came to this planet to try and make a race of superhumans – or metahumans, as we know them. There was
