The bed creaked against his weight. It silenced when his feet came against the cold, biting surface of the hardwood floor. Heat must’ve turned off in the night, he thought, scratching the dry itch in his throat. Half expecting wisps of fog to escape his lips, he let out a long, exhausted exhale.
Water. That was what he needed. He slipped into a winter coat, threw on some socks to combat the cold flooring, and headed out. The bedroom door groaned eerily behind him.
Each step made the floorboards creak. After what he’d seen, it made it feel like cold, wet feet slapped after him. The sweat dripping down his neck made the feeling rise twofold. The groaning floorboards set off a chain reaction of popping creaks, making it feel like he was surrounded.
He entered the main foyer and crossed to the kitchen
